= Registered trademark of BASF Aktiengesellschaft File cover Adhesive Raw Materials, 2

formerly Acronal DS 6029

Redispersible polymer powder primarily intended for modifying inorganic binders, e. g. cement, lime, and gypsum

Dispersions

Acronal S 629 P

Nature

Copolymer in powder form based on butyl acrylate and styrene.

Properties
Acronal S 629 P is a slightly yellowish dispersion in powder form. It does not contain plasticizers, coalescents or inorganic fillers. It can be redispersed in water by vigorous stirring. Application
Acronal S 629 P is used to modify hydraulic binders. It is mainly intended as a polymer additive to stiff (dry) mortars that merely have to be mixed with water to the desired consistency before application. Examples or fields of application are cement finishing coats, concrete floors, plasters, cement sealing coats, concrete-bonding mortars, structural adhesives (e. g. for laying ceramic tiles by the thin-bed process), and composite heat-insulation systems. Acronal S 629 P imparts mortars with increased strength, abrasion resistance, and adhesion if the inorganic binder cannot cure sufficiently owing to excessive drying out of the mortar. Even if adequate moisture is available, the presence of Acronal S 629 P in the mortar is an advantage because the flexibility of the cured compound is thus increased and the adhesion to problematic substrates, even with access of moisture, is improved. Processing The addition of 5 20 % wt of Acronal S 629 P, expressed in terms of the weight of hydraulic binder, generally suffices for the applications mentioned above. Proportions of 15 20 % wt. should be added for ensuring greater flexibility of the cured mortar. Acronal S 629 P can be processed in the mixers normally used in the production of dry mortars. However, owing to its thermoplastic character, the temperature rise should not be too much or the shear forces may not increase excessively. Acronal S 629 P is dissolved in hydraulic binder systems. It unfolds its properties directly after it has been added to the make-up water and without a long maturing time. Formulators must perform their own careful trials in developing products based on Acronal S 629 P, because experiments on our part cannot embrace the great variety of factors that may exert an influence during production and processing, e. g. its compatibility with other components of the formulation, the mixing mechanisms, and the adhesion to various substrates. The tests should include storage trials at about 50 C in order to detect the possibility of any changes, e. g. in the initial viscosity of a mix.

Safety
General The normal precautions relating to handling chemicals and local regulations on industrial hygiene must be observed. Effective exhaust ventilation to remove dust must be ensured during mixing, skin care measures should be adopted, and safety goggles should be worn. All the data relating to safety have been compiled in the Safety Data Sheet for Acronal S 629 P. Acronal S 629 P still contains technically avoidable residual amounts of volatile organic components. Further information is given in the Safety Data Sheet. According to the experience that we have gained and other information at our disposal, Acronal S 629 P does not exert any harmful effects on health, provided that it is used for the purpose for which it is intended and the principles of sound manufacturing practice are adhered to. Prolonged contact to the product may cause irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. Labelling According to the information at our disposal, Acronal S 629 P is not a hazardous industrial product in the sense of the German Health and Safety Regulations* or the EEC Guidelines on Classification and Labelling. It does not contain any hazardous components in levels that the processor must take into consideration in labelling.

Storage
Acronal S 629 P should be stored in a cool and dry place for periods not exceeding 12 months. Once the bags have been opened, their contents should be used up as soon as possible, because lumps may form in a humid atmosphere. Since Acronal S 629 P is thermoplastic, the bags must not be exposed to elevated temperatures or subjected to pressure, as otherwise caking may occur. Ready-mixed dry mortars are not subject to this risk.

Note
The information submitted in this publication is based on our current knowledge and experience. In view of the many factors that may affect processing and application, these data do not relieve processors of the responsibility of carrying out their own tests and experiments; neither do they imply any legally binding assurance of certain properties or of suitability for a specific purpose. It is the responsibility of those to whom we supply our products to ensure that any proprietary rights and existing laws and legislation are observed.
