Structure for Internship / Project Report Writing Suggested format to share experience/best practices/lessons/stories-Case Studies Analysis.

The purpose of a case study is to share examples of the practical application. A summer Internship by itself could evolve as a case study. I suggest the following format: Background One or two paragraphs which describe the context. This might include: The country and region The objective /problem/disaster which was addressed and who was affected The response to the problem/disaster from the company, local civil and governmental actors as well as international actors Your organization and its work The Problem Definition and Objective One paragraph which describes the problem that needed attention and why the action suggested was applied. How Alternatives were generated and Evaluated (Financial analysis if any used for the option analysis) Two to three paragraphs describing how various alternatives were generated and used and what the immediate changes- in essence a Sensitivity analysis. Recommendation/Course of Action suggested After due evaluation of all the alternatives/options the analysis needs to suggest a recommended action plan. Contingency Plan As a management consultant we need to have a ready back up plan just in case the original suggested recommendation fails to operate due to any reasons not under the full control of the management. LEARNINGS-Lessons learned One paragraph summarizing the result of the entire Analysis. Did it help in addressing the problem at hand and the response thereof during your stay in the company? What key issues did you identify, and what lessons are there for others in developing a handbook/manual? COMPANY ANALYSIS

For an industry and company analysis then the format needs to be adopted with a wider perspective. Your oral presentations should be clearly developed, well organized and use exhibits effectively to enhance the analysis presented. ORGANISATIONAL ANALYSIS This section will present your identification of the firm's strengths and weaknesses which emanate from your value chain and functional analyses. There is a maximum of five strengths and weaknesses and your identification of them is assumed to be in a prioritized order. Provide strong support for each and be specific and quantify your analysis where possible. You may wish to create exhibits to help support the strengths and weaknesses you identified. This section should provide the first part of the foundation for your identification of strategic issues and related recommendations through your analysis of the firm's core competencies, competitive advantages and organizational weaknesses. ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS This section will present your identification of the major external threats and opportunities currently facing the firm. These will be generated from your analysis of the industry and general environmental factors in light of the firm's strengths and weaknesses previously identified. A maximum of five threats and opportunities is expected and they also will be presented in a prioritized order. Again, use exhibits for support and be specific and quantify where possible. This section will provide the final part of the foundation for your identification of strategic issue(s) and the formulation of related recommendations through your analysis of driving forces, key success factors and industry attractiveness. COMPETITOR ANALYSIS This section will present your identification of the major competition and opportunities currently exploited by the firm keeping in mind the competitors. The section would entail your identification of the firm's strengths and weaknesses vis-a-vis the competitors. Your analysis should also prospectively predict areas where new competitors can emerge and also a scenario planning of where the industry as a whole and the company in particular will progress in the future. STRATEGIC ISSUES AND RECOMMENDATIONS Identify and fully support and discuss the most important strategic issue(s) facing the organization. There will never be more than two issues in any case. It is extremely important to clearly integrate each strategic issue with your prior analyses of the firm's SWOT. There are often interrelationships between particular weaknesses and threats or missed opportunities, which should be recognized. It's possible that 2 different weaknesses, 1 threat and 1 opportunity could be combined, due to their relatedness, to form 1 strategic

issue. Similarly, your recommendation(s) should attempt to capitalize on strengths (or competitive advantages) and/or opportunities that you identified. Make sure your recommendations directly address the strategic issue(s) you identified. The point is to clearly ground your issues and recommendations with your prior internal and external analyses. To the best degree possible, discuss the recommendation's costs and financing considerations along with an analysis of the risks it entails. Use of exhibits (e.g. pro forma income statements, new organization structure) to help support both issues and recommendations is strongly encouraged.

NOTE: Your exhibits must include 1) an analysis of financial data through ratio analysis and % of sales analysis, 2) a complete 5 forces analysis(Michael Porter's 5 force model-diagrammatically), and 3) identification of the major driving forces and key success factors which impact the firm. Use of other types of exhibits is strongly encouraged.
