Project-based learning provides students with an opportunity to integrate knowledge, critical reflection and practical skills. Interactive critiques: Group critiques are undertaken both during the course of design projects and upon their completion. Critiquing is intended not only to provide an evaluation, but to stimulate debate among students and tutors as to the results and implications of research, analysis and project work. Seminars: Often organized to address research issues or critical topics, small group seminars provide tutor-student interaction in which arguments and viewpoints can be considered. Some seminars are student-led, encouraging student involvement in research, application of concepts to observed cases, and effective presentation to peers. Tutorials: Small group tutorials are used to compare ideas, approaches and analysis of design issues, often in the context of project development work. Individual tutorials provide personal guidance and most often take place between students and their study advisors. Lectures: Delivered by tutors or invited guests, lectures serve to highlight and interpret important and standard material for all.

Workshops: These involve the learning of practical skills and the appreciation of materials and processes through hands-on experience and experiments. Independent study: Students consult their tutors for topics of interest to them. The aim is to students self-motivation and encouraging self-learning activities. Visits and study trips (local and overseas): Visits to exhibitions, conferences, educational institutes, industrial organizations, sites, and design firms extend students knowledge and appreciation of issues, problems and practices of design in different contexts. Overseas study trips provide a further means of considering design in relation to cultural, social and economic variations. Individual practice and teamwork: The programs provide a mixture of learning environments, with students undertaking design projects both individually and in small groups. Work-Integrated Education: The school promotes the professionalism of the design industry by placing students in real-life situations through internship subjects, as well as working on real-life design opportunities through cooperative projects that involve commercial partners.

Exchange The international exchange program is an opportunity for students to experience studying abroad, outside of their habitual cultural context. It aims to develop students understanding and good will while strengthening cultural ties. It usually takes place in the second year of the Bachelors program for out-bound Hong Kong students. International students visiting Hong Kong can participate in our design studio work and study a large variety of subjects offered by our different disciplines. Our studio studies are fast-paced, focusing on experimentation and development of good design sense. Hong Kong is in close proximity (45 minutes to the mainland border) to Chinas largest industrial cities in the Pearl River Delta. Studying at PolyU makes it ideal to understand this fast growing economy.

Work-Integrated Education and Internship Work-Integrated Education (WIE) is work-based learning experiences which take place in an organization context relevant to a students profession, or the development of generic skills that will be valuable to that profession.

Work Integrated Education

96

Work Integrated Education

97

For students The aim of WIE is to give students working experience in a real-life environment so that students will be able to better appreciate what they learn in class, to integrate theory with practice, to enhance all-round development and to make better career plans. To prepare students for a smooth transition from school to workplace, we invite collaborators to participate in two types of Work-Integrated Education: Co-operative Workshop and Summer Internship. For collaborators While your company contributes in training young design talents, our students provide fresh ideas and bring in energetic spirits to your organization. Your involvement is important for the development of our next generations of designers. Contact us if you have design opportunities to offer to our students.
