SUSPENSION OF SCHOOL CANTEEN To: All District Supervisors/PIDs/Principal/School Heads Secondary School Principals/TICs/OICs 1. The Integrated School Health and Nutrition Section would like to ensure that the guidelines for implementing the operation and management of school canteens be observed in compliance to DEPED Memo No.8 s.2007. 2. It has come to our attention that food items/beverages are commonly sold to pupils/students like artificially flavored/colored ice pops/ice candies, tea drinks, coffee/coffee-based drinks and carbonated drinks which are detrimental to the health of the children. 3. It is proven that CAFFEINE has bad effects to our health.Caffeine is found in tea, coffee, colas and other softdrinks and chocolates. 4.Caffeine has effects as:a psychoactive stimulant ,causes insomnia,anxiety and headache,a cardiovascular stimulant that increases heart rate, contracts heart muscles, causes irregular heart rhythm,palpitations,increases bone loss,causes hyperacidity,is linked with duodenal ulcer,inhibits absorption of iron and inhibits action of Vitamin B. 5.Authority is given to the Division School Health and Nutrition Personnel or Division Monitoring Team to issue SUSPENSION of these School Canteens found violating the guidelines after due notice to the school head/principal and canteen teacher. 6. Upon discovery of violation of the school canteen like selling prohibited food items detrimental to the health of the children, this actual observation of the Division personnel will be sited as basis of the violation of the guidelines with the school head/principal and canteen manager or representative present. 7. A 15 day SUSPENSION will be issued to the parties of the school canteen. 8. A written report to comply by the parties of the school canteen will be done within 15 day period. After which the school canteen will reapply to restart operations again after that period. 9. The Division Health and Nutrition Personnel will reevaluate the school canteen and may grant this to restart their operations. 10. Close monitoring of the school canteens will be done by the Division School Health and Nutrition Personnel with the Division Monitoring team. 11. For dissemination and strict enforcement.
