CRL COCHIN -1X80 T/HR PRESSURISED BOILER 1 TURBO-DRIVEN BFP AND FD FAN - HOT ALIGNMENT MISMATCH.

HISTORY: CRL/Cochin boiler is provided with turbo-drives (supplied by M/s. Tuthill Corporation, USA) for BFP and FD fan. The inlet and exhaust piping for the above turbine were designed by Piping Centre, Chennai, with horizontal run of 3 metres near the connecting flange to the turbine. Also the piping near the turbine was provided with bottom support from concrete pedestal.

PROBLEMS FACED:

After completing the cold alignment of the turbine with the BFP/FD Fan (as per the supplier's recommendation, the alignment of the turbine shaft is to be done with driven equipment with an offset so that when the turbine get heated up, both the shafts are parallel and concentric at operation temperature). The BFP turbine was run in decoupled condition for one hour to attain temperature and hot alignment readings were checked. There was deviation in the alignment in the radial direction beyond limits showing that the piping forces were applying on the turbine pushing the shaft centre line upwards and side wards in the direction opposite to pipe connection.

MODIFICATIONS CARRIED OUT: 1. The inlet pipe and exhaust pipe of BFP turbine were having pedestal support with metal to metal contact near the turbine. with SS plates at contact points of the pedestal of piping without restraint 2. With this arrangement, alignment readings were taken after running the A teflon sheet was introduced support to facilitate expansion

turbine for one hour.

There was 50% improvement in the alignment reading

from the previous run due to teflon and SS plates arrangement. 3. Piping the and and Centre suggested introduction The for one of bottom loading in the spring supports were it with also was in teflon carried found

After carrying out the support modifications decoupled vibration conditions, The turbine was coupled with BFP (displacement microns)

CONCLUSION: The turbine was run in decoupled condition and the hot alignment readings were in line with supplier's recommendation. The turbine was coupled with FD fan and trial run taken. The vibration (displacement in micron) levels were in single digit
