Data descriptions and Measures of Central Tendency Mean, Median, Mode Standard Deviation
Quick View The most familiar way to look at data is to take the average of the set of numbers. In chapter 3, we will delve into numerous other ways to look at data. The level of mathematics has increased with these new topics, but you will nd our step by step approach easy to use.
Objectives After completing Chapter 3, you will be able to: Summarize data using measures of central tendency such as mean, median, and mode. Describe data using variations such as range, variance, and standard deviation. Identify positions of data using percentiles, deciles, and quartiles through the use of z-scores. Explore data using box plots.
Activity 1
Mean, Median, Mode, & Mid Range Class Activity Section 3-1
Mean The sum of values divided by the number of values. The mean should be rounded to one more decimal place than occurs in the raw data. Median The midpoint of the data. If there is an even number of values, the median is the average of the middle two terms. Mode The value that occurs the most. If no value appears more than once, then no mode exists. If more than one value occurs the most, then you may have multiple modes. Midrange Average of the lowest value and the highest value.
Please print two sheets to turn in: Sheet one: Shows original data and all nal answers labeld Sheet two: Shows all formulas you used in excel
Example Find the range, variance, and standard deviation for: 35, 45, 30, 35, 40, 25
Reading Questions
Population Vs. Sample Standard Deviation
p. 117 Please explain why the distances between the mean and each value are squared. ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________
Compare population and sample standard deviation Please Compare and Contrast population and sample standard deviations. ________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ The One Why do we subtract one on sample standard deviation? f * x m2
Class Activity Find V ariance and Standard Deviation %om a Frequency Distribution
Complete the Chart We will complete the chart above in preparation for using the shortcut method of nding standard deviation of a sample of 20 runners weekly mileage. Complete the calculations here
Please turn in two printed sheets for your answers. Sheet one: This should be a printed document showing the nal cell values with labels
Sheet 2: This should be a sheet printed showing all formulas used in your cells. Bonus Please look up the excel formulas for nding variance and standard deviation. These may be typed in a section titled--Bonus on either one of your answers.
