I am writing to express my interest in the Masters of Educational Technologies with the University of British Columbia.

My intent in applying for this program is to improve my teaching by learning how to integrate technology into my classroom to better engage my techsavvy students. Not only do I want to learn and conduct research in educational technology and its incorporation in an everyday classroom, I also want to be able to reflect upon my own teaching practices and to apply what I have learned in my own classroom, and become a leader in technology at both the school and district level. My education, work experience, and professional goals have directed me to submit my application for the Masters of Educational Technology with UBC. While completing my Bachelor of Education degree with a major in French and a minor in Spanish at the University of Alberta, I completed two practica; one at each of the middle school and high school levels. In September 2007, I was hired for a teaching position in School District #33. I currently have a full-time continuing contract at Chilliwack Secondary School teaching all levels of Spanish, but have also taught courses in English and ESL. Upon completion of my B.Ed., as well as working in the teaching field, I decided to pursue further studies by enrolling in a non-degree program at the University of Victoria taking various courses in Curriculum and Instruction within the Faculty of Education. As a teacher, it is important to me to always have goals in order to improve my teaching. At the classroom level, my goal is to learn how to integrate learning technologies into my lessons that will provide the students with the ability to better engage in the curriculum by creating meaningful, relevant learning experiences. In addition to better engaging my students, my goal is to be able to provide education in my subject area to those students who cannot be present in a classroom. The clientele of todays schools is changing. More students are having to work and support themselves in certain catchment areas and are thus not receiving the education they deserve. Subsequently, my goal at the school level is to collaborate with my colleagues in order to share ideas and research about creating, incorporating, and using technology from which I will have gained from this program to motivate and improve student learning, especially for students of today who do not have the ability to physically be in a classroom. Ultimately, at the district level, my goal is to be able to provide leadership in the area of learning technologies that will enable other teachers to create and use technology-supported learning environments at all levels of education. The Masters of Educational Technology will enable me to achieve my goals by allowing me to create and integrate technology into my teaching. In turn, this will enable me to help my students better engage in the curriculum by creating technology-supported learning environments for 21st century instructional design.
