Currency:
Shilling Declines

Performance: The KES registered a poor showing, gaining in two currency pairs while weakening
in five. The only gains for the day were 1.0% and 0.78% against the ZAR and INR respectively. The
gain against the INR was due to concerns that overseas investors would pull out more money
from local assets leaving the rupee vulnerable to a record current account deficit. The biggest
drop of 1.16% to the GBP was due to the pound strengthening against the USD after industry
reports showed UK service & manufacturing growth accelerated in June; coupled with
construction expansion signalling that the economic recovery is gaining momentum.
