DUNEDIN - Wildlife & Heritage Destination of New Zealand

Dunedin is a city that captivates and enchants... it is a city in which to linger and explore...

Majestic Victorian and Edwardian architecture, a proximity to an abundance of spectacular wildlife and a lively youth culture make for a fascinating and exciting melange in this eminently human-sized city. The city of Dunedin is framed by a magnificent harbour, long and picturesque. It sits on the doorstep of Otago Peninsula, which has long been acclaimed for its beauty and eco-tourism. Dunedins spectacular hills, white sand beaches and rugged rock outcrops are home to a fascinating array of rare wildlife, amazing in its abundance and diversity. Dunedin boasts the worlds only mainland breeding colony of the albatross and fantastic viewing of the rare yellow-eyed penguin in their natural habitat. It is little wonder that internationally acclaimed environmentalist David Bellamy has described Otago Peninsula as the finest example of ecotourism in the world. Dunedin is a picture postcard of historic buildings and houses, set against a backdrop of the citys lush greenbelt of native bush. Dunedin is widely regarded as the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian

heritage city in the southern hemisphere. Its many stunning public buildings include: Dunedin Railway Station - described by UK travel guide DK Eyewitness as one of the worlds 200 must see places. Olveston - Dunedins Historic Home an intimate glimpse of Dunedin lifestyle in the Edwardian era The magnificent 130-year-old stone buildings of the University of Otago The perfectly proportioned gothic First Church and Larnach Castle - New Zealands only castle - sitting high on the Otago Peninsula ..... to name only a few. Dunedin is also a place where its past lives easily with its present. Almost one fifth of the citys population of 123,000 are students, giving Dunedin a lively, edgy feel ... it is little wonder that imagination and creativity abound. Dunedin has forged a place as an incubator for a unique subculture, breeding leading edge fashion designers and artisans. The id

Dunedin Fashion Show is now an annual event that draws international interest. Settled by the Scots in 1848, Dunedins Scottish heritage is still very much alive in the street names and buildings. The lilting sound of the bagpipes can often be heard on the city streets, in this city where the haggis ceremony is regularly performed. A statue of the famous Scottish poet Robbie Burns sits aloft and presides over the city centre, a reminder of the citys heritage Dunedin is New Zealands largest city by area and arguably the most spectacular in terms of contrasting landscapes. There are kilometres of stunning panoramas - across Otago Harbour and Peninsula or the majestic sweeps along the sandy beaches of St Clair to the stunning little secret places such as Tunnel Beach and the haunting rocky tors and tussock of Middlemarch, our hinterland and the starting point for the Otago Central Rail Trail. The seaside settlements of Karitane and Port Chalmers provide the perfect setting to escape the city for the day. Dunedin offers much to stir the senses.

NEW ZEALAND SPORTS HALL OF FAME

The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is where New Zealands sporting past comes to life.
The Hall is housed in the historic Dunedin Railway Station and includes exhibits and displays on sporting champions who have been inducted from more than 30 sports. The Hall is, in effect, the national sports museum the only one of its kind in New Zealand. It began in Wellington in 1990 and worked out of an office for eight years before opening as a museum in the Dunedin Railway Station in 1999. Annual induction ceremonies are televised nationally.

Stephen Jaquiery

Just 20 minutes from downtown Dunedin you will find Orokonui Ecosanctuary, an inspirational addition to any itinerary. The 307 hectare Ecosanctuary is the only predator free area of native bush in the South Island and is home to some of New Zealands most fascinating and rare forest wildlife including the curious native parrot (kaka), Otagos jewelled gecko, rifleman, and the South Island saddleback to name a few. The re-introduction of many birds, reptiles and plants that had been lost from the area, including kiwi and South Island robin, is also underway. This safe haven provides visitors with an exceptional experience where they will encounter New Zealands native flora and fauna in a protected and natural environment. Guided tours of Orokonui Ecosanctuary are suitable for both groups and FIT clients of all abilities. The tours describe the intricate world of Otagos coastal forest and its inhabitants. A caf and interpretive visitor centre is also on site and is able to cater for both groups and FITs.

Olveston is a modern masterpiece in the Edwardian Era, yet its collections reflect a collecting fashion more akin to the zest of Victorian collectors. The 35 room mansion complete with original collections was opened to the public in 1967. In historic terms it is already priceless a time capsule. Tours operate daily (min 6 tours each day) except Christmas Day and group tours are most welcome. The Olveston gift shop is a special experience for the purchase of small gifts and collectables.

THE TWILIGHT WILDLIFE TOUR

TWILIGHT is Dunedins original small group wildlife tour of the Otago Peninsula. The tour is operated in a friendly relaxed manner by our professional guides who will introduce visitors to some of New Zealands unique wildlife. Our guests will be taken by mini-bus to the Royal Albatross Centre to view the royals as they soar majestically above the headland before visiting a secluded bay where a minimum of walking (200 metres) is required to reach our viewing area. From here you can view Yellow Eyed Penguins coming ashore and socialising on the hillside before returning to their nests. This bay is also home to a large male population of New Zealand fur seals, which can be seen sunning themselves on the rocks just meters from our hide. Occasionally dolphins come into the bay along with other seal species, which haul out for a rest. We will allow time for the unexpected should it occur.
