1. It is weird to many people to try and change your


brainwaves. It sounds like it could be unnatural or unsafe. (both of which are not the case)

2. There is a lot of marketing going on around this


technology. A lot of people that promote brainwave entrainment sell it as a quick fix program for all of your problems. The truth is that there is no quick fix for all of your problems. Brainwave entrainment is simply a tool that will put you on a really fast track to improving your mind, and it does require a little bit of effort on your part. (but not much!)

name; as well as the different forms of this technology like binaural beats and isochronic tones. The name alone is enough for people to dismiss it as either way to advanced for them to use or too weird and science fictiony.

entrainment products that simply dont work. Everyones brain is different. There are different types of brainwave entrainment and there are very few people who are not physically susceptible to this technology. There are several different forms of brainwave entrainment and chances are if you can hear, it will work for you. So lets get started by looking at what brainwave entrainment is, and the physical effects it has on your brain. Chapter 2- What is brainwave entrainment?

The best way to describe brainwave entrainment (BWE) is to look at the meaning of each word seperatly. The word entrain means "to adjust an internal rhythm so that it synchronizes with an external cycle". A brainwave is an electrical impulse in the brain. So, brainwave entrainment, in essence, is the process of adjusting the internal rhythm of the electrical impulses in your brain so that it synchronizes with an external cycle.

Changing your brainwaves Sounds kind of nerdy Well, it actually kind of is a bit nerdy, yet so extremely valuable and life changing, that when we discover how it

12 actually works and the amazing benefits it has, I think you will be kicking yourself for not discovering it sooner. Ok, so now that we have a basic understanding of what brainwave entrainment is, lets start to look more specifically at what it does. Here is a quote from a great book about BWE called Megabrain by Michael Hutchinson. He describes BWE and mind machines as:
...effective devices for presenting humans with concentrated bursts of experience that step up production of the brain chemicals associated with pleasure, learning, memory and creativity... they are quite natural, since they work by causing the body to release its own natural chemicals... they work like drugs, but they are not drugs... they can act rapidly, powerfully, and without any effort on the part of the user. -Michael Hutchison (Megabrain)

Brain Basics To really understand what is happening in the brain to get the awesome effects of BWE, we must understand a little bit more about how the brain functions and how brainwaves are created. Lets get started with some brain basics The outer most layer of your brain is called the cerebral cortex. It covers the largest part of your brain, the cerebellum, and is sometimes referred to as "grey matter". This is the part of the brain that you typically see in pictures of the brain and the part that most people visualize when they think about the brain.

14 In this area of the brain, there are millions of nerve cells called neurons. These cells have two different types of branches coming off their cell bodies, dendrites and axions, for sending and receiving messages. Interconnected neurons provide efficient, lightning-fast communication that send signals all throughout your brain and body in the form of electrical impulses. These electrical impulses are your thoughts, which lead to your physical actions. As a result of all of this electrical activity and these neurons that are furiously firing away, you are constantly emitting waves of energy from your head. These waves of energy created by the brain can be detected, and read by an EEG (electroencephalography) machine. You know like you see in the movies where all of the dots and wires are coming from a person's head connected to a bunch of computers and machines This machine gives a read-out of the voltage fluctuations resulting from ionic current flows within the neurons of the brain. These electronic current flows are known to the less nerdy as brain waves.

Brain waves are similar to sound waves or light waves that you cannot see. They travel as a cyclical wave and are measured in cycles per second or hertz.Your brain creates several different frequencies of brain waves and actually fluctuates between these different frequencies quite often throughout the day. There are four main categories of brain wave frequencies. Below is a chart of these four categories and the general state of mind they are associated with.

As you can see, generally speaking, the slower the brain wave, the more calm and relaxed your brain is. The higher the brain wave, the more active your brain is. However, a more active brain is not always a good thing. The higher frequencies can also be associated with stress, anxiety, and uneasiness. We will get more into that in the next chapter. Now that you know a little bit more about brain waves, lets take a look at how exactly brainwave entrainment works and some different kinds of BWE.

17 How BWE Works


How does brain entrainment really work? .How do you get your brain in tune with these different brainwave frequencies?

Well, the same basic concept is followed as when you place two pendulum clocks against the same wall together. Even if you start out with the pendulums swinging at different times or rates, the vibrations through the wall will eventually 'entrain' the two clocks so that the pendulums swing precisely together. The Dutch scientist, Christian Huygens discovered this concept in 1665. The same principal is followed when applied to brain waves. When you are listening to BWE, you are essentially listening to a regular pulsation of sound that replicates the speed cycle of a specific brain wave frequency.Your brain will begin to generate a frequency following response (FFR) and essentially sync up with the corresponding desired brain wave pattern. That doesnt sound very complicated at all, right?

18 Here is where the problem comes in Brain wave frequencies that are targeted for entrainment are low, usually somewhere between 0-20 hertz. This is generally too low for the human ear to pick up audibly. This is what led to the development of several different kinds of audio brainwave entrainment.

Different Kinds of BWE The three most common forms of audio brainwave entrainment are binaural beats, isochronic tones, and monaural beats. Because scientists and very smart people invented them, they do have some technical sounding names. This may be a turn off to some people, but they are so easy to use anyone can listen and benefit. Because everyones brain is different, one kind of BWE might work better for you than another. So, lets take a closer look at the differences between all of them.

Binaural Beats
Binaural beats are probably the most common form of BWE out there today, mostly because they have been around for a while and tested to great extent. Binaural beats were discovered 1839 but weren't really fully researched and developed until 1973 by Gerald Oster. Once Mr. Oster wrote the book Auditory Beats in the Brain, binaural beats really took off and became a neurological phenomenon. Binaural beats are a tried and trusted way of entraining the brain that anyone can enjoy. They are the cheapest form of brain entrainment and extremely accessible. All you need is a computer or mp3 payer, a few bucks to download them, and some stereo headphones. So what are binaural beats? Binaural beats require the use of stereo headphones. This is important because the only way for it to work is when two different frequencies are hear separately in each

20 ear at the same time. What happens then is that your brain will process the two tones in the middle of your head and sync up with the difference between these two frequencies. So, for example, a pulsating tone of 300 hertz will be played onto the right ear, while a tone at 310 is played into the left ear. Your brain will recognize the difference between the two frequencies and 'entrain' to the difference of 10 hertz, which is in the range of alpha brain wave activity. Because there are two different frequencies being sent to each ear, it is extremely important that you listen to these with stereo headphones. It's not important that they be nice or expensive headphones. I use the regular apple headphones that came with my iphone. Try to stay away from bass boosting headphones, as this could be potentially damaging to your ears. Binaural beats are great and there are a lot of them

21 out there to choose from, but for some people they may be a little hard to listen to, give you a headache, or just an uneasy feeling. Remember, this is supposed to be a relaxing and meditative experience, so if binaural beats are making you uncomfortable, stop listening to them and try something else! Also, binaural beats just flat out dont work for some people, because their brain has a hard time registering the difference between the two frequencies. This is not extremely common, but it does happen. If the brain does not pick up on the difference between the two frequencies, there will be no frequency following response, and nothing will happen. Again, if binaural beats do not work for you keep reading and try one of the other types of brain entrainment.

Monaural Beats
Monaural beats are similar to binaural beats except that the two different tones are combined digitally or naturally on the recording. The two different tones are played through the speakers in both ears even if you are listening with headphones. This way, the brain does not have to do the work of differentiating the between the two different pulsating tones. The two tones create an interference pattern that generates the frequency of entrainment outside of your head and before it goes through the speakers. This is great because you as a listener do not have to use head phones to get the full effect. You can play the mp3 over a speaker so you don't have to worry about those pesky headphones jamming into your ear when roll

23 over if you fall asleep while listening. It's also great because your whole body can pick up on these vibrations instead of just feeling the effect though the aural senses. This way, you have the potential of your whole body and all of your senses coming into contact with these positive vibrations. Just make sure that you are in a place where there will be no outside noises or distractions. This also comes in handy when you want to share the experience in a group, or if you are entraining during light physical activities like yoga. There is nothing like doing yoga in a truly peaceful and relaxed state of mind while listening to some monaural beats. Highly recommended! However, because the two tones are combined before they hit your ear, the results may not be quite as strong. Part of the process that makes binaural beats so great is that it is giving the brain a little bit of a work out to

24 differentiate the difference between the two frequencies on either side of the brain. Monaural beats are also usually a little harsher on the ears, which is why you will often hear a lot of extra music or background noises and effects playing over top of them. This can be effective at making them easier to listen to but not as effective as far as results are concerned. Probably the biggest drawback to monaural beats is that they cannot be created to entrain to frequencies lower than 4 herts. This means that you the low delta range is not achievable with monaural beats. Delta is associated with deep sleep and lucid dreaming.

Isochronic Tones
Isochronic tones are a little bit newer and there are a lot of people that swear by them. What makes isochronic tones different is that they are simply pulses of a single tone, similar to a metronome or drum beat. This creates a greater contrast between sound and silence, which can have a greater effect on the brain. The sound is emitted at regular intervals exciting the thalamus and entraining your brain waves to the pattern being played. Isochronic tones are very similar to monaural tones in the in the fast that you can listen to them without headphones. However, just like monaural beats, they cannot be generated for any waves lower than 4 hertz. Because this frequency is so low, the human brain can not pick up on such a slow wave cycle. This is why most of the BWE recordings that are in the delta range (typically used for help with sleeping, are binaural beats instead of isochronic tones.

26 Many people swear that isochronic tones are easier on the ear, while some people say that it gives them a headache while binaural beats don't. Again, everyone is different What makes isochronic tones better to some people is the accuracy of the rhythmic pattern and how it speeds up or slows down. The fact that you are only hearing one tone (the same tone) in both ears can make it very effective at stimulating the thalamus which is in the center of your brain right above your brain stem. This generally makes isochronic tones work faster and more effectively for most people.

What it all really comes down to when trying to decide on what type of brainwave entrainment to use is personal preference. Every person is different and experiences things in a different way. Chapter 3- Benefits of brainwave entrainment

Ok, ok, ok So, brainwave entrainment changes your brain waves Big deal- who cares, right? What does all of this mean to me? Why would I even want to change my brain waves anyway? I thought they have been doing just fine. Well, have you ever felt like you are engaged in a constant argument in your head, or a battle between thoughts of what feels right, what makes logical sense, and a fear of what other people are thinking about you? Most of us regular people refer to this unhappy state of mind as simply being stressed out, anxious, having self-doubt, or maybe even depression. To the scientific community, this state of mind is referred to as brain lateralization.

29 Problem #1: Brain Lateralization This concept is best summed up by Bill Harris, a brainwave entrainment expert, developer of one of the best BWE programs to date, and featured guest on the movie The Secret. Here is how he describes this unsettling feeling of brain lateralization. In virtually all people, the hemispheres are unbalanced, a state called brain lateralization...The greater the lateralization of the brain, the greater the feelings of separation - and the greater the feelings of separation... the greater the stress, anxiety and isolation.

So, as you can see, a major disadvantage of regular brain function is how the left and right hemispheres of the brain communicate.You have probably heard about the concept of right and left brain functionality. The left side of the brain is the logical, analytical side, while right brain is the intuitive, creative side. While there may be some truth to this, modern science has somewhat debunked this

30 theory proving that different areas of the brain serve different functions, and are not necessarily restricted to a certain side of the brain.

Never the less, the fact does remain that the only way the two lumps of grey matter on either side of your head are able to communicate is through a small tract of connective tissue in the middle of the brain called the corpus callosum. This can make it difficult when you are trying to complete large tasks that may require not only deductive, logical reasoning skills, but also creative, artistic

31 skills at the same time. What if we could strengthen this connective tissue; make it stronger by growing new neuropathways that provide easier and faster communication to all areas of the brain? Brainwave entrainment can do just that.

Problem #2 Unfocused Bran Waves As mentioned in the last chapter, most people operate in the beta brain frequency during normal waking activities. But, while the overall majority of your brain waves may be in the beta range, some areas of your brain are simultaneously operating in the alpha or theta range.
