Explain about the construction details and working of microprocessor based fuel injection system. (or) 14. A two cylinder four stroke engine runs at 240 rpm developing a torque of 5.16 kNm. The bore and stroke of cylinder are 30 cm and 58.5 cm respectively. The engine runs with gaseous fuel of calorific value 16.5 MJ/m3. The gas and air mixture is supplied in proportion of 1:7 by volume. The volumetric efficiency is 0.85. Determine (a) the brake power (b) the mean piston speed in m/s. (c) the brake mean effective pressure. (d) the brake thermal efficiency.

15. (a) Classify air compressors and explain the working of a single stage reciprocating air compressor. (7) (b) Highlight the advantages of multi stage air compression and also list the applications of compressed air. (5) (or) 16. Dry steam at 10 bar and 100 m/s enters a nozzle and leaves it with velocity of 300 m/s at 5 bar. For 16 kg/s of steam mass flow rate, determine the heat drop in nozzle and final state of steam leaving the nozzle, assuming heat loss to the surrounding as 10kJ/s. 17. A vapour compression cycle works on Freon 12 with condensation temperature of 40 C and evaporator temperature of 20 C. Refrigeration effect of 2.86 tones is required from the cycle. The compressor runs with 1200 rpm and has clearance volume of 2%. Considering compression index of 1.13, determine (a) the COP. (b) the piston displacement in the reciprocating compressor used for compression. (or) 18. With suitable sketches explain the vapour absorption cycle for Ammonia water system and its working. 19. Clearly explain the summer and winter air conditioning systems with neat sketches. (or) 20. Write short note on the following. (or) A three stage reciprocating air compressor compresses air from 1 bar 17 C to 35 bar. The law of compression is PV 1.25= C and is applicable to all stages. Assuming perfect inter cooling and neglecting clearance, valve resistance, find the minimum power required to compress 15m / min of free air. Also find the intermediate pressure. A 7.5 tonnes VCRS works between 40 C and - 10 C. calculate the mass flow rate of the refrigerant, heat rejected in the condenser, COP and power required. Assume no under cooling, vapour is dry saturated after compression and the refrigerant is R12. (or) Write short note on heat pump, heat transformer and crogenics engineering. (a) What are the sources of heating load? Discuss. (5)

14. In a trial of 1 hour duration on a single cylinder oil engine working on four stroke cycle, the following observations were made. Bore 300mm, stroke 450mm, fuel used 8.8kg, calorific value of fuel 41,800 kJ/kg, average speed 200rpm, mep 5.8 bar, brake friction load 1860 N, quantity of cooling water 650kg, temperature rise 22 C, diameter of the brake wheel 1.22m. Calculate i) mechanical efficiency, ii) brake thermal efficiency. Also draw the heat sheet. 15. (a) What do you mean by multistage compression? State its advantages? (b) Describe the working of any one positive displacement compressor. (or) 16. A steam nozzle is supplied steam at 15 bar, 400 C and discharges steam at 1.5 bar. If the diverging portion of the nozzle is 80mm long and the throat diameter is 6mm, determine the cone angle of the divergent portion. Assume that 10% of the total available enthalpy drop is lost in friction in the divergent portion. Also determine the velocity and temperature of steam at the throat. 17. Explain the working of a vapour compression refrigeration cycle with suitable sketches. List the applications of refrigeration (or) 18. A cold storage room requires refrigeration system (R-12) of 20 tonnes capacity. The evaporator temperature is 265K and that of condenser is 303k.
