Preface
This guide explains how to use the Managed Backup Services client software on a dedicated web-hosting or colocation computer running Windows NT or Windows 2000 operating system. This guide shows how to restore data files that have been backed up using the managed backup service. The specific files to be backed up and the scheduling of the backup process are specified at the time of purchase of the managed backup service. This service is controlled on a Verio backup server, not the customers system. To change your current backup service options please call your technical support representative. The Veritas NetBackup software client is supported on the following platforms: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 SP6 or later Microsoft Windows 2000 SP1 or later A separate manual describes the use of the client software on UNIX operating systems see Related Documents.

Who Should Use This Guide?

This guide is intended for customers and their systems administrators who have purchased managed backup services for their colocation and dedicated web-hosting computer systems. The reader is expected to have: A conceptual understanding of full and incremental backups. A familiarity with Microsoft Windows file-system concepts.

Introduction to Managed Backup Services

The Managed Backup Service is offered to colocation and dedicated webhosting customers as a way of backing up the data on the equipment located in the colocation space or stored on the dedicated web-server(s). The servers data (backup clients) is backed-up to tape via the backup server. The backup clients are connected to the backup server using a dedicated backup network. Backups are automatically performed on a daily basis if part of the purchased plan. At any time, the customer can use the Veritas NetBackup client software to search the catalog of backed-up files and select files to be restored. Customer data is stored on site for 14 or 28 days depending on the plan purchased. Tapes can also be optionally transferred off-site to a tape vault for longer-term storage and protection. The customer can request a tape from the offsite storage facility for data retrieval.

Windows GUI
The Veritas NetBackup client for Windows operating systems uses the standard Windows GUI. This software must be run on the client where files need to be restored. To administrate this client remotely, the NetBackup client machine must have a remote display utility such as Windows Terminal Services or PCAnywhere.

2.1. Starting the NetBackup User Interface

Before you can restore files on your system, you will need to log on to the system with the appropriate privileges. Admistrator privileges are typically used, but are not required. To start the NetBackup interface, click Start -> Programs -> VERITAS NetBackup -> NetBackup If successful a screen should appear similar to figure 2.

Windows GUI

Figure 2 - Backup, Archive and Restore If the NetBackup screen above does not appear, check to make sure that the Veritas NetBackup software is installed. If this is not the problem, contact Customer Support.

2.2. Restoring Files

This section describes how to restore files to their original file-system location or an alternative location in the same or different file-system. From main screen that you started in 2.1, click on Select for Restore. A sub-window should appear. See figure 3.

Windows GUI

Search for Backups Images

By default, the NetBackup History pane will show the last successful full-backup and all of the incremental backups since the last full backup. If the image is not listed then you will need to search for backups. To search for backups click Restore -> Search Backups To search on all available drive letters, leave the default of :\ Optionally, enter a keyword to help the search. Select the start date range then select the end date range. When finished, click Search. See figure 4.

Figure 4 - Search Backups Select the backup image in the upper pane. These images are sorted by date, most recent first. Each green ball with a check mark inside of it is a successful full backup image. If there is more than one backup performed in one day, additional colored balls will appear below the date. They are sorted by newest to oldest. To select a backup image, click on a colored ball. This will display the backed up folders in the All Folders pane. Green colored ball notes a full backup has taken place. An incremental backup is noted by a light blue ball with a + symbol in it. By default, the backups listed will be based on the package that has been purchased. For Basic Daily (available for dedicated server customers only), the interface will show those backups performed over the last 14 days - this will include 2 full backups (1 per week) and 12 incremental backups (1 per day excluding full backup days). For Basic Weekly (available for dedicated server customers only), the interface will show those backups performed over the last 14 days - this will include 2 full backups (1 per week). For the Preferred Plan (available for colocation and dedicated server customers), the interface will show those backups performed over the last 28 days - this will include 4 full backups

(1 per week) and 24 incremental backups (1 per day excluding full backup days). If there are no backups of your files in the master backup catalog, nothing will be shown in the NetBackup History pane.

Select Files and Directories to Restore

On the All Folders pane, drill down the into the directory tree by clicking on the + boxes to expand the directories. Click on the check box to the left of the directory name to select a directory and all its contents to be restored. Figure 5 - Selecting Files to Restore Directories that have partial files selected will have a / in their check box instead of a check mark. Warning : If you attempt to restore the entire file system, including the system state on to a working system, you could render your machine unusable. It is advisable to restore only data files.

Specifying an Alternative Restore Directory

Note: This is an optional procedure. You may want to restore files to another location on the file system. To specify a different path: Click on Restore -> Start Restore of Makred Files , Select Specify Alternate Path. Select Restore every to a different location (maintaining existing structure):

You can also specify a unique destination for each file. To do this click on Restore individual folders and files to different location (double-click to modify): Double click on each file in the scroll list. Type or browse a new path name for the file. Click OK when finished. See figure 6.

Figure 6 - Specify an individual path name Repeat for the other files. To determine what NetBackup should do if the destination file already exists, select from one of the three choices: Overwrite the existing file Restore the file using a temporary filename. This will place the file in the same directory but rename the file so that the original file will not be overwritten. Do not restore the file

To initiate the restore click Start Restore.

Monitor the progress of the restore request until it reports The requested operation was successfully completed. This may take some time based on the amount of data involved in the restore. Note that tapes containing recent backups are stored on-site. If you have purchased off-site vaulting services, older tapes are stored off-site. Refer to your contract for the terms and conditions defining how quickly tapes are retrieved from the vault and delivered back to the data-center to be used for a restore. Click on the CLOSE button to return to the main menu.
