My fellow anglers and friends,

The Asian Angler is growing fast and this is good. This month we add another new section called Introducin where we showcase new products that are either coming into the market and / or is in the market but still new. With more sections being introduced we have decided to remove the Dealers Directory section to lighten the magazine. We will be creating a directory magazine for it in the near future. In this issue we begin taking a look at fishing rods. We will go deeper in future issues letting you in on some industry secrets as well as to destroy a few myths. The objective is to help you understand rods better and make better decissions when you next pruchase a rod. This month there is an Angling and Outdoor Recreational Fair in Shah Alam Convention Center, on the 28th to the 30th of June, and we hope to see you there. Do share with your friends and let them know as well as this exciting show will showcase an exciting array of fishing equipment. This month Abu Garcia Malaysia has organized an Abu Garcia Logo Hunt in The Asian Angler magazine. Do try your luck and hunt down these missing Abu Garcia logos and you may win yourself a prize. Get your freinds to participate as well and add more fun to the hunt. Stay tuned to The Asian Anglers facebook page and if you have yet to like our facebook page, please do so. It will be great as you get updates and first hand information from us directly. Have a great fishing month and enjoy reading The Asian Angler. Thank you for supporting us. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

Ryobis Powerhouse: The A.P. Power Reel_____

By Philemon Foo

Test Drives

Daiwas and Shimanos, is making a comeback and it is time that they do. Talking to people within the industry, the news is that the owners of Ryobi are taking this homecoming very seriously, and I applaud them for that.

Ryobi, a brand that long ago stood side by side with

19

Dont Judge A Reel By Its Box

I was recently given the opportunity to test drive the Ryobi AP. Power reel that came to me in an unassuming gray box. The first thing that caught my attention (other than the brand and series) is the sentence Full Metal Body Spinning Reel of which reminded me of another reel brand that I used to purchase for resorts that I worked with whilst in the hospitality industry. We loved them for their reliability.

21

The Feel Of Power

The reel looked unassuming (seems to be the trend these days even with high end reels) as well until you lay your hands on it and feel the toughness. Your perception changes when you try to twist the reel foot to see how solid the reel really is. Even the rotor body is as solid as a rock.

23

Caress the spool and you will find it to be designed rugged of which the fellows in the automobile industry call brushed aluminium trims used in sportier models. The rugged spool is also designed with holes of which not only increases its cool factor but also makes it lighter. Remove the spool and a strong thick shaft points straight up. The shaft alone tells you that this reel is made to withstand battles of which the military would classify as a tank. It also has a bail arm wire that has been to the gym and is showing off its muscles. Look at the AP. Power reel longer and all you really see is a reel built tough ready to show who the boss really is.

25

Performance Lab Test

Look and feel is one thing. We subjected the Ryobi AP. Power to our lab test. From there we will be able to gauge is maximum drag capacity and smoothness range. Turning the handle proves it to be a smooth and well balanced reel to start with. The drag too is smooth but drags do change in behaviour as you tighten them. The reel of which we tested in our lab (size 4000) is rated at 5kg. However we managed to register a pleasantly surprising maximum drag of 16.25lb (7.4kg) of which is 2.4kg above the specified rating. Drag smoothness too was equally impressive reaching about 14.75lb (6.7kg) before going into stutter mode, of which is at about 91% of the total registered drag.

27

Verdict
It didnt rate very high on the looks section due to its cosmetics not being outstanding but if you were to buy reels based only on looks, you could be seriously disappointed. The more important thing would be its performance and this is where the Ryobi AP. Power excels. Note, we did not do any real time field test for this reel and all tests were done at our lab of which is torturing enough. All in all the Ryobi AP. Power is an impressive reel that is built tough and solid, with a drag capacity that is more that its rated capacity, equally impressive drag smoothness range, and I believe; one of the reels that will bring the Ryobi brand back to its glory days.

Rod Ford Battlax: Tortured & Begging For More

By Philemon Foo There was a phase in my life where gaming
kept me up at nights. I enjoyed strategic role playing games and one of my favourite weapons was the battle axe, one of the more powerful weapons favoured by dwarves. Last month I had the opportunity to reconnect with the battle axe but in the shape of fishing rods created by Rod Ford. Battlax (Battle Axe to me) is one of the sub brands under the Rod Ford brand.

35

Most of you may not be familiar with Rod Ford rods as it is a relatively new brand that is slowly making waves within our fishing community. Rod Ford rods are well built, with modern sporty designs, using quality components like Fuji, and yet they are affordable to many.

37

The Three Battlaxes

I had the opportunity to test three Rod Ford Battlax rods and they are the Serpent Master, the Launcher, and the Finezze. All three of them are casting rods (was told that the Battlax only comes in casting models). Before we go into the real world field test, allow me to divulge how they performed in our lab.

39

Lab Test Serpent Master

The Serpent Master that I had the opportunity to test drive is the heaviest amongst the three rods. It is a 66 length and 15-30lb rod. It is a rod with a offset joint at the butt (butt joint rod). What I like about this configuration is that the blank maintains a nice and consistent curve. Whats nicer is that the Serpent has a tip that is powerful of which helps you to control the fish better.

41

Sporty carbon fibre wrap adorned with a Rock & Roll type Rod Ford logo. Nice I say.
43

Quality Fuji reel seat, split butt handles (cork), EVA fore handle, carbon fibre wraps, etc....

45

It comes with Fuji reel seat and guides, sporty reel seat with carbon fibre reel seat fastener, split rear butt cork handles with carbon fibre wraps, and rounded EVA fore handle. Putting it against our weighted dumbbell discs, the Serpent Master managed a total weight of 4.5kg on the bounce (1) of which would be an estimated force weight of about 13.5kg which translates to about 30lb.

47

Lab Test Launcher

The Launcher is an 8-17lb medium action 6 two piece rod of which is a sporty rod with carbon fibre wraps, mixture or cork and EVA rear handles, EVA fore handles, painted Fuji reel seat, and Fuji guides. All so lovely and with the many things that I look for in a rod especially its balance.

49

Cork+EVA rear handle not only look nice. They are comfortable to grip.
51

Fuji reel seat painted black with Rod Ford logo printed on top. Nice and subtle desing.
53

The Launcher has a powerful tip (for its weight class) which is great. The Launcher will help with fish fighting leveraging the game over to the anglers side. The Launcher did the dumbbell test with a total weight of 2.75kg on the bounce (1) of which has an estimated force weight of about 8.25kg which translates to about 18lb.

55

Lab Test - Finezze

The lightest of the lot is the Finezze of which is a 5 4-10lb, medium light action rod, with split rear cork handles, carbon fibre wraps, and comes in two piece configuration. This lightweight rod is also really well balanced.

57

Comfortable split rear cork rear handle with EVA gives the Finezze a sporty look.

59

The Finezze did a dumbbell test with a total weight of 2kg on the bounce (1) of which has an estimated force weight of about 6kg which translates to about 13.2lb of which is above the rate test. Note however that we believe that all these rods can handle more but because these rods were not given to us, we decided to play within safer limits.

61

Winning Battles
Now, let us go to the field test. The field test was done with MGFA (Malaysian Game Fishing Anglers), the distributors of the Rod Ford rod series at the Exotic Pond in Rawang. Why did we do the test there? Well, the fishes are always obliging and they do punch hard and also under the belt.

63

The Serpent Master was the bully of the bunch. The red tail Amazonian monsters were no match for this rod. Asking or rather begging for a tougher fight, the Serpent Master can definitely take a lot more.

65

Casting with the Serpent Master is a joy especially with heavier lures and in this case heavier jig heads and larger soft plastics. However, do note that with the faster tip I would recommend that soft plastic users use monofilament leaders with some stretch as to not miss the fish by striking too early. However, hard lure users will be pleasantly happy with this action.

67

The Launcher is a superb rod to cast with. The tip of this rod flicks out lures effortlessly and I just love casting with it. Being a medium action rod made the fight with the Amazonians a lot more fun and challenging.

69

Another thing that I love about the Launcher is that it packs a punch. A sucker punch if I may add. The Launcher had enough power to turn the heads of the Amazonian monsters pulling them away from pillars and waterwheels.

71

Now, what about the little Finezze? Little and medium light the Finezze may be, but it is no way a lesser rod. It is made to cast small lures a game of finesse fishing. With a softer tip it can definitely do this well.

73

How about the fight? While most finesse rods are made to handle smallish fish, we subjected the finesse to the same fishes that the other heavier rods have to manage and we showed the Finezze no favours or Mercy. Win the fight or die in battle, no negotiations. The Finesse rod to me shone the brightest. Imagine David and Goliath, well, that time it is the Finesse and the Amazonians. The Finezze surprisingly had enough power to control the fish without breaking and that makes this rod such a great rod among the bunch.

75

The Verdict

There are many new rod brands in the market these days. The Rod Ford brand is one of them. What I like about the Rod Ford rods that we tested recently are that they are really well built, well designed, they come with components normally available in more expensive rods, they are light, they are sensitive, and they are power packed rods. It is easy to decide to buy a famous brand rod but do not discount these new comers. You may actually find yourself a very good deal.

HavinG Fun With A Fun Rod: Ofmer Kewl Sakura

By Philemon Foo A fishing rod does set the tone of your fishing trip. It can make

you smile and it can very well make you frown. Of course it also depends on other factors and thus the phrase; a balance setup. Many of the anglers who know me personally can attest to this; that I used to spend a lot of time fishing on dry land or a puddle of water at a parking lot. I sometimes spend hours doing just so. I used to design rods for a few markets and have to test every pro-

81

Some rods are a lot of fun to cast with and those rods become my toys for a while. Although I no longer work for a fishing tackle company and I no longer design rods, I still am privileged to be able to continue enjoying rods that give me fun such as the Ofmer Kewl Sakura.

83

Wasabi On A Stick
The first time I laid eyes on the Ofmer Kewl Sakura rod I had this mixture of reaction in my mind. The chemicals that confuses a persons brain was overflowing. Honestly, the colour needed some getting used to. But as I held on longer, the rod grew on me and I started really liking it. Yes, the colour too. I guarantee that when the designer of the rod was looking for inspiration, it came in the form of wasabi; Japans world famous mustard.
85

Fun Caster
The Ofmer Kewl Sakura is like the Fiat 500 Abarth a cute and fun car to drive. It may not appeal to the mass market but for the select few who want something out of the ordinary, something that says I hate normality, and something less serious but a lot more fun; this is a rod to consider. It casts really well and whats even better is that it comes with smaller guides. They are not micro-guides but they are smaller guides which make the rod tip lighter and help with accuracy. A softer tip makes casting so much fun too.

87

89

Quality Inside
While the Ofmer Kewl Sakura is fun and wild looking on the outside, it is packed with quality inside. Fuji components are used on the rod. The reel seat is Fuji thus your reel will be seating neatly in quality. Your fishing lines too would be gliding with delight across quality Fuji Alconite New Concept guides and these guides can take the heat.

91

Subtle Sportiness
Like Fiat 500 Abarth, the Ofmer Sakura Kewl is subtly sporty. Look under the reel seat where one of your fingers rest and you see some carbon fibre wrapping. Look at the fore grip and you see this sporty looking rim that has design cues from the Volkswagen GTIs 17 rims, the one with the circles. This is what I call fun sportiness.

93

Cues taken from the Volkswagen GTis sports rims?

95

Blank Performance
Taking it indoors we put it through our lab test (oh yes, we built ourselves a lab in our secret lair). We attached a reel with 20lb lines and a carabineer to the Ofmer Kewl Sakura and set it at a 45 degrees angle. Next we secure a drag checker to the line and lock the carabineer to an anchor.

97

The anchor is then pulled outwards till it reaches a level where we say enough is enough and lock down the anchor. We then take the rod out of the holder and manually raise it as if playing a fish close to its limits. More photos are taken and then we come to the end.

99

The first thing we check is the drag checker. It registered slightly above 4lb (About 4.5lb). The average force from a sudden burst of a panicked fish is about (bouncing weight test) 2.5 to 3 times the weight. Thus the estimated force is at about 10lb to 12lb. The rod that we tested is rated 6-12lb.

101

Verdict
While the series, Kewl, may not be well known it is definitely a rod to consider. It is definitely a fun and easy rod to cast with. If you are not yet a baitcaster and have written down learn baitcasting in your new years resolution list, this is one of the rods that I will recommend. It is easy to learn with. It is also a superb rod for playing soft plastic baits. For the season angler that loves entertaining peacock bass or sebaraus (Hampala macrolepidota) at some cool lowland mountain stream, this will be another fun rod to add to your collection.

103

This is the first time I am actually playing with a Kewl series rod and I will be looking to see what they come out with next. Available Models SKR C 562: 56 2 piece SKR C602: 6 2 piece SKR C662: 66 2 piece

TheAikidoOfFishing:ZenZaganJiggingRods
By Philemon Foo
martial arts. You may not practise it but I am sure that you have heard about it and know a little of what it is. Well, I have recently tested out some rods of which I believe to have been built using the influences of a form of martial arts. Zen Zagans come with an amazing rod blank. They take the punches that come and redirect it back but at a higher force. It is like taking the methods of Aikido (Japanese martial arts) and employing them into these rods. What you get is a rod that absorbs the sudden burst or run of a panicking brute and then using the energy from that run to fight the brute.

I am sure that most of you are familiar with at least one type of

109

Quality Support System

These amazing Zen Zagan rods comes with quality Fuji New Concept Alconite K-Series guides, Fuji reel seat, High quality EVA handles, etc. This support system is very important to completing this wonderful package of a rod. With the Zen Zagan rods it is the harmony of quality coming together as one to give you, what I call, the Zen Zagan experience while you fish. Before putting them in the ring with the real fighters, we decided to see what these rods are capable of doing. Well, not to find their 110% potential but just to see if they meet the claimed specs.

111

Disturbing The Zen

Like most of the rods that has come before the Zen, the Zen Zagan rods had to go through our lab test. The three rods I had in my hands are the Zen Zagan Sonic Jerk (PE 2.5, 80g jig, Max. Drag 4kg), Slow Twitch (PE 3, 100g jig, Max Drag 8kg), and Metal Mayhem (PE 4, 150g jig, Max. Drag 10kg).

113

Zen Zagan Sonic Jerk

This is by no means a jerk of a rod. It is light weight, feels light, and is well balanced. It also cast really well but this is in fact a jigging rod. So let us not be diverted. The Sonic Jerk had to go through a pressure test where we test to see if the rod achieves what it claims to be able to achieve.

115

The Sonic Jerk claims to be able to take a maximum drag force of 4kg. Thus all it needed was to manage a 1.5kg to 1.75kg weight drop test of which has a force weight of about 2.5 to 3 times. The Sonic Jerk managed a force of an average of 4.4kg to about 5.25kg.

117

Zen Zagan Slow Twitch

The Zen Zagan Slow Twitch claims to be able to manage an 8kg drag force. Thus we put it up against 2.5kg for a start and push it all the way up to 3kg. It managed an average force of 75kg to 9kg. Well, I believe that it can handle more but then again it met the minimum specified claim drag weight.

119

Fuji New Concept Alconite K Series guides.

121

Rear handle with a touch of class, using EVA+High Density Synthetic Cork, and Zagan printed metal washer.
123

Zen Zagan Metal Mayhem

The Metal Mayhem is the heaviest amongst the three Zen Zagan rods that I have in my hands. It claims a maximum drag of 10kg. With that in mind we started with a 2.75 kg weight and went up all the way to 3.75kg. The Metal Mayhem managed that really well handling a maximum average force of 9.4kg to 11.25kg One thing to note is that these rods I believe can take more than what we have dished out. We only wanted to see if they meet up with what they claimed.
125

127

Get In The Ring

We took all three Zen Zagan rods out for a few hours of fun at the Amazonian red tail catfish pond in Rawang, called Exotic. Since I do not have a jigging trip planned this will have to do. Anyway, these rods will definitely be able to perform at the sport of jigging. We wanted to see how the rod will hold up to playing hard fighting fishes.

129

The fishes there were as they are, happy to take our bait and gave us a run for our money. The rods really performed well. The rods are indeed powerful. The Zen Zagan rods took on the fishes easily. The Aikido moves they performed help leverage the fight over to my side saving me energy to handle more fishes.

131

This is possible as the tip has a strong rebound or come back rate that help with managing the fish. Even the lightest of the lot, the Sonic Jerk packed a powerful punch.

133

It must be said that the fishes at the Exotic Pond in Rawang (those that we caught) didnt really test the rods to their full potential but the Zen Zagan has been to places where many a rod has served its last master. * Picture courtesy of MGFA

135

Verdict
The Zen Zagan rods look modest but they are in fact power packed rods built using high quality components. The blank itself is amazingly powerful able to take a lot of pressure. All in all they are really good rods, the type you will want on your side when you are fighting a brute on the other side of the line. Great rod, great components, and good value for money.

Introducin
New Abu Garcia Salty Stage Jigging Rod
By Philemon Foo

With more and more anglers taking up jigging, we are seeing more and more jigging rods in our markets. Jigging in itself is going through a new phase of which will be a subject that I will touch in the future. For now let us take a look at a beautiful new jigging rod by Abu Garcia called the Abu Garcia Salty Stage Jigging rod. At first glance it hit me that this rod got its cues from the amazing Abu Garcia Salty Stage reels. They share similar colours and cosmetics. When I saw the name, it confirmed everything.
139

Butt Joint (Offset Joint)

One of the things that many anglers have been asking for is a rod that is convenient to carry about and yet has the same curve consistency of a one piece rod. The answer to such a request is an offset joint at the fore handle (grip) commonly known as butt joint. While such a design does not split a rod in exact (close to exact) halves such as the two piece rods, they do make it easier to store and they do have the curve consistency of a one piece rod. A good balance I must say.

141

Tough Blank
Although I didnt have the opportunity to test this rod out at sea, I put it through the paces in our lab. First it was the curve test which shows that the curve is indeed consistent throughout. Next was the weighted bounce test of up to 2.5kg and force reading of 7.20kg.

143

The blank has a thick blank wall that explains is toughness. Thick blank walls may add some weight to the rod but when you are on to a big brute of a fish, it more than makes up for the weight especially when you need the rod to help you fight. With a good tip recoil action, this rod will do just that.

Made To Handle Brutes

Having a tough blank is one thing. The Abu Garcia Salty Stage Jigging rod also comes with ceramic guides with stainless steel frames (important for such a rod), High quality EVA grips, and a rigid butt section area that ends (or begins) with a gimbal hidden within a rubber cap. However, this gimbal is made of graphite and we cannot measure its strengths just yet.
145

The Verdict
The Abu Garcia Salty Stage Jigging rod is a tough and strong rod made to manage tough fishes. I am not sure how much this rod will be retailing for but if you are intending to jig for bodybuilding type fish, then you will need a jigging rod like this one.

Introducin
Ryobi Tresor
By Philemon Foo When you want to be up there
with the best what do you do? You do what you need to do to get there. Ryobi definitely wants to get back up there. They have been coming out with better quality reels and their later reels are getting even better. One of these reels is the Ryobi Tresor.

149

Humbly Modern Design

The Tresor comes in a humble but modern design. The Aluminium spool is ported with holes to make it lighter but it is still strong and tough. Its body is metallic grey with chrome sections that add some luxury to it especially around the handle and at the bottom of the reel.

151

Toughness And Reasonable

Coming at a reasonable price the Tresor comes with a solid and tough body and a graphite spool that is solid enough for our type of fishing. It also has a reasonably strong shaft, thick and strong bail arm wire, solid aluminium handle, and EVA handle knob.

153

Drag Performance
The Tresor performs quite well with smooth rotations and drag. The reel handed to us was the Ryobi Tresor 2000 of which is a size 2000 reel. We subjected it to the drag test and it hit a maximum of 3.25kg (stated to be 2.5kg). The Tresor also has a smooth drag of up to 3kg of which is about 92% of the total drag.

155

The Verdict
The Ryobi Tresor is a reel that performs well and will sit nicely into the mid range reel segment. Design wise it may not win many accolades but if you are comparing prices to performance and gauging reels based on these (performance), you will find the Ryobi Tresor to be a good reel.

Knowledge Wise

Understanding Fishing Rods: Part 1

By Philemon Foo

fishing rod is. For the new anglers or non anglers, a fishing rod is basically a tool that helps the angler to cast out his or her bait, hook, line, sinker, lure, etc. and / or to place his or her bait at a certain distance (pole). It also adds fun and excitement to the sport of fishing. But there is more. A fishing rod is not just a fishing rod. There are a lot more things to learn about fishing rods. One of the reasons for me to embark on such a subject is because of the misunderstanding of fishing rods.

As anglers we are all familiar with what a

159

My objective here is to give you a better understanding on fishing rods and to debunk a few myths. These myths have been planted into the minds of anglers by their friends, people they learn from, advertisements by fishing tackle companies of which are misunderstood, and even experience.

161

In the coming few issues we will debunk the myths below: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Expensive rods should not break. A good rod will never break. Only expensive rods are good rods. A good rod has a thick tip. Strong rods can bend without breaking. Light (as in weight) rods are not strong. One rod for all types of fishing. Only rods with Fuji components are good (yes they are but there are more). 9. The best rods are from Japan. 10. China made rods are not good.
163

In the coming issues we will also cover materials that are used to make rods and help you to make sense of some of the industrys jargons and terms of which can be very confusing even to people in the industry. A the end of the series it is our hope that you will be well equipped with sufficient knowledge that will help you make a better informed decision when you next purchase a fishing rod.

Telescopic rods are convenient rods for travel.

165

The Anatomy Of A Fishing Rod

To start off let us look back at some basics. Fishing rods come in a few different configurations. There are the 1 piece or a single piece type rods, two piece rods of which consist of two blanks, 3 to 6 piece rods made for travelling or also commonly known as travel rods, and then there are rods with many pieces all in one of which is telescopic (telescopic rods).

Single piece or 1 piece rod has a more consistent bend and power.
167

Travel rods make traveling and fishing more convinient.

169

A fishing rod is made up of a couple of components. There is the blank, the grip or handle, the guides, the reel seat, ferrule (male and female), windings, winding checks, butt, butt cap, some rods have hook keepers, some rods have gimbals, some rods have weighted discs, etc. Put all of these things together and you get a fishing rod. It is important to note that each of these components has a role to play both in design as well as your fishing. We shall take a closer look at them starting with rod blanks in the next issue.

Cherengin Hills Convention & Spa Resort

By Philemon Foo

Anglers Havens

Clean & nice swimming pool.

177

When someone mentions hill

resorts near Kuala Lumpur what comes to minds are mainly Genting Highlands (Theme Parks and Casinos) or Berjaya Hills (French Themed Village).

However, there is a little hidden gem amidst the both of them that is often missed even by the Kuala Lumpur folks and we recently had the opportunity to discover that gem.

179

About forty five minutes (without traffic congestions) from Kuala Lumpur is a little hill village called Janda Baik of which simply means Good Widow in English. There are different stories as to how this little hill area got its name and that I shall allow you to find out for yourself on your visit.

181

Before heading to Janda Baik I did some research and found the Cherengin Hill Convention & Spa Resort to be the most ideal resort for my family and me. The reason being that we are a pampered lot and air-conditioning is a must have (the recent heat wave is a killer), my child likes swimming pools (I like them clean), and I need a place to wet my lines nearby. The Cherengin Hills Convention & Spa Resort has all that and more.

183

Where Is Janda Baik?

Janda Baik is located in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. Getting to Janda Baik is best done by cab or a rented car as there are no public busses that ferry passengers there. If not mistaken, the bus service ends at Bentong town of which is still quite a distance from Janda Baik. Drive towards Genting Sempah rest area where you will see this rather huge eatery with lots of stalls and a Mc Donalds. At the roundabout use the first exit (the one that says Janda Baik). Follow this road and look out for signage that says Kampung Janda Baik. Click on POCode for more information. For map please also use satellite view as the Google Maps is not updated. POCode: QRV*DF3NC
http://pocode.com/viewpocode.php?c=QRV*DF3NC

185

We arrived at about 4.30pm and it was a really hot day no thanks to the heat wave that was caused by the changing wind patterns and effects of the cyclonic storm Mahesan over the Bay of Bengal. The one thing I really needed was to take a cold shower.

187

After checking in we made our way to our room and the first thing I did was to turn on the air-conditioning. Next I laid my bag down and hit the shower. The cool shower was a retreat from the intense heat. I swear I could smell smoke coming out of my head. Thank God the air-conditioning worked really well and had cool down the room to a comfortable level.

189

We stayed in one of the superior rooms and after having visited and stayed in so many resorts, I have to say that the bed here ranks highly in terms of comfort. The beds and pillows are not too soft and not too hard; just nice to my liking. After a half hour nap we decided to take a walk about the resort before heading for dinner at the Gelugor Garden Cafe.

191

Superb Traditional Food

I must say that I gained easily about 2kg enjoying some of the best traditional Malaysian dishes such as ayam percik (some sort of spice chicken), daging masak halia (beef cooked with ginger), and a few other dishes that I just cannot seem to remember. All I know is that they tasted great.

193

The ayam percik is simply magnificent. Juicy chicken cooked in percik sauce. I am not sure how percik sauce is done but this is one of the best I have ever tasted in an hotel or resort. As for the ginger beef, the meet is so soft, tender, and juicy. I just went plate after plate after plate.

195

I then asked one of the staffs if these dishes on the buffet line were because of the government agencies having their meetings here and have requested for these dishes and he delightfully answered no. The chef actually specializes in local traditional food. If you are visiting Janda Baik and staying at the Cherengin Hills, this is a must have.

197

Hitting The Pool

What do most children love? The swimming pool of course. My daughter could spend hours in the pool and sometimes even forgetting to eat. The swimming pool here is clean and the cool water is a great welcome especially in hot weather. In the evenings I would sit by the pool and use the wifi to go online and connect to the world. Wifi unfortunately is not available in our room.

199

Activities
There is more to just a swimming pool. Cherengin Hills Convention and Spa resort also has bicycles for rent, pool tables, a dart board, and various excursion activities of which are visits to the kampong, river tubing, jungle trekking, and fishing. You can also drive around Janda Baik and visit places such as the Ulu Tampit waterfalls, conifer forest, organic farms, etc. Or you could go horse riding, river trekking, etc.

201

Well, if driving around and checking places out is not your thing you could picnic out by the cool mountain streams. Taking a dip in these chilly waters is a great way to relax while little stream fishes pay you visit. We found a nice quiet area near ILMU (some government training centre) where the stream is cleaner.

203

For The Angler

After breakfast the next morning we decided to drive around the area. I brought along my fishing rod and a few spoons. My wife wanted to go to the organic farm and I wanted to take a better look at Janda Baik.

205

A short drive away from the resort, something caught my eye. It was a deep section of a stream that looked promising. I stopped the car and decided to wet my line. I put on one of my little spoons and walked down to the stream. On my second cast a fish hit my spoon and took it for a ride. It shot straight towards the fast flowing section of the stream and into the deep. Not long later up came a sebarau (Hampala macrolepidota). It took me less than three minutes to catch my first fish. Feeling happy, we went on our way.

207

I returned again just before dinner (at about 6pm) and caught another two sebaraus. By 6.25pm I was back at my room and we were having dinner at 6.40pm.

209

Fishing the rapids. Lost a fish here that crushed my hook.

After chatting with the locals I learnt that there are other fish species in the streams. However, they claim that sebaraus do not exist in the streams and when I tell them that I caught a few, they actually looked surprised. One of them suggested that they could be escapees from one of the private ponds that got flooded during the rainy season.

211

Whatever the reason, fishing is available not far from the resort and that makes Cherengin Hills Convention and Spa Resort one of the resorts that an angler and his family or an angling family can holiday at
213

Recommended Fishing Tackle

The locals that I spoke to recommended using baits such as bread, crickets, and worms. So if you intend to do some bottom fishing these are the baits needed. If you are a sports angler using artificial lures, my recommendation will be spoons and soft plastics. Flies should work too.

215

Rods: Ultralight to medium action. Main lines: 8lb Leader: 14lb at least.

Things To bring
Mosquito repellent some areas have mosquitoes. Swim wear and equipment. Bath towels (when you go dipping at the stream). Rubber shoes. Fishing tackle.

217

My Thoughts
Janda Baik is an ideal place to visit with your family. It is also about 20 minutes drive to Genting Highlands should you prefer to go to the theme park and for some cooler air. What makes it really great is that it is not far from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur city. The Cherengin Hills Convention and Spa Resort is a lovely place to bring your family to for a holiday. The food is lovely, rooms are clean, the beds are comfy, and fishing is not far away. Price is also affordable and all these make it one of our Anglers Havens.

Advanced Baitcasting: Part VI

The Underhand Cast By Philemon Foo
We have arrived at a casting technique
that many have been asking me to teach. The underhand cast is one of the casting techniques that gives you accuracy and all you need is a little space. Imagine being squished in between two trees with overhanging branches and you still insist on casting towards the frenzy some distance in front of you. The normal overhead cast will not work as you have over hanging branches. The side cast is a no too as there is a tree there. The backhand cast is also impossible to perform due to another tree being there. Pitching and flipping will not work due to the distance. You are left with one choice. The underhand cast.

Skill Enhancers

227

Training Tools
The underhand cast is one of the more difficult casting techniques to learn. My recommendation is to use a shorter rod (55) with a flexible or rather slower tip action (tip with slow recoil or slower comeback rate). The reason for this is that you will need to feel the rod tip to catch the time of release. Also get yourself a casting plug.

229

Well Trained Thumb

For this technique you will need a well trained thumb. Feathering the spool is very important. Backlash or birds-nesting your reel is almost inevitable even on well trained thumbs. Okay, enough of scaring you. Now let us get down to the details.

Thumbing is very important.

231

The Mechanics Of The Underhand Cast

The underhand cast relies more on the tip of the rod to perform the cast. The idea here is to use the tip to shoot the plug (or lure) out. So what you will be doing is to basically whip the rod allowing the tip to bend inwards and as the tip goes back out, you release the spool allowing the tip to shoot the plug out.

233

The Practise
To do this, start with a tighter brake setting. Reel in the line bringing the plug all the way to the tip of the rod. Hold your rod in front of you pointing forward. Raise your entire arm to about shoulder height. Point the rod tip towards the ground as in the picture, at about 45 degrees angle. Now whip your rod tip and try to feel the tip.

235

As the tip moves in and right about where it is about to shoot back out, you will have to release the spool allowing the tip to shoot the plug out. Too early and the plug will dive right onto the ground. Too late and your plug will shoot right up in front of you.

237

Do this until you get the timing right. You will have to feel the rod tip and from there catch the timing or release. Dont worry too much about the plug shooting out but at a higher trajectory. Just focus on getting the plug to shoot forward. It takes a lot of practice to get it right.

239

Putting It To Work
Step One
Set the reel brakes just right (not too low). Reel up the plug till it touches your rod tip. Point the rod tip forward and raise your arm anywhere midway to about the height of your shoulder.

Lure Coming inwards towards the angler.

Casting plug or lure, right at the tip.

241

Step Two
Whip the rod and as the rod tip flexes inwards and is about to flex back out, release your spool allowing the tip to shoot the plug out.

Lure about to move outwards ready for the cast.

243

Step Three
Point your rod tip outwards as the plug glides through the air and lower your rod tip as it reaches the water or in this case, ground.

Lure has shot out into the water.

245

Keep practising
Even when you get it right on many occasions continue to practise as this technique relies heavily feel. And when you change fishing rods you will have to catch the timing again. Once you get used to the underhand cast and it becomes second nature, you can move on to heavier rods and you can also bring both your cast and lure flight height lower to allow for a quieter entry. Sporting Fishes

The Pacu
By Philemon Foo
The pacu is a hard fighting freshwater fish that is found in most rivers and streams in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of lowland Amazonia as well as in the river systems of Papua New Guinea. However, they have been introduced to a number of countries via the aquarium trade as well as anglers. Closely related to its more famous cousin the piranha fish, pacus grow much larger in size and have a friendlier looking set of molars. While piranhas have sharp pointed teeth made for cutting through flesh, the pacus teeth look more like those of humans, being squarer and straight. Pacus are omnivorous which means they eat almost every type of food.

Brando and a good size pacu caught at a commercial fishing pond in Bangkok, Thailand.
249

A Place Called Home

In countries where sport fishing is booming such as Malaysia and Thailand, the pacu fish has been introduced into certain ponds (mostly commercial fishing ponds) where anglers can go to for their fishing fixes. Being hard fighters and willing to take bait as well as lures, they have become one of the attractions at commercial fishing ponds. There seems to be a few different species of pacus in these ponds. There is the one that is yellowish in color, while some are reddish (Piaractus brachypomus), and the more hard fighting one would be the black pacu (Colossoma macropomum).

251

Dietary Supplementation
Pacus eat practically any kind of food they see. They eat baitfish, insects, crustaceans, worms, seeds, nuts, etc. Apart from these foods they also take plastic lures, soft baits, spoons, dough baits, eggs, etc. (thinking that these are food obviously) making them good sport fishing fish.

This pacu took a liking to Berkley Gulp! Chicken Liver.

253

Fishing Them
I have caught pacus on a variety of baits and lures. I have caught them on prawns, eggs, dough baits and boillies, as well as on soft baits and plastic lures. They fight hard especially the black species and will give you a run for your money. However, do note that they have teeth that can and will cut through leaders. Thicker leaders may be able to withstand its molars but it has a downside too. In waters that are heavily fished (most commercial fishing ponds are), the pacus tend to be more careful. A thicker leader could mean a quieter day of fishing.

255

Recommended Tackle
Rods : Medium action rods Reels: Size 2000 will be enough Main lines: 10lb to 14lb super lines Leader: 18 to 20lb fluorocarbon Hooks: This is important especially to Bottom angler. Use long shank hooks or circle hooks. For added challenge and fun Rods: Light action Reels: Size 1000 Mainline: 6lb to 8lb super lines

Fishy Tales

Fishing With The Guvnor : Back To Biwako

By Tengku Izzudin

Theres something about the fishing and the

scenery that keeps pulling me back to the ancient lake of Biwa, a 670km2 natural lake that holds about 27.5 billions tons of water. Located in Shiga prefecture in Japan, its also very close to Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. With a long history and the boasting the largemouth bass world record at 22lbs from its water theres bound to be some good fishing! During my last trip to this vast lake I actually managed to catch some fish, though previous attempts at other locations went horribly wrong and as all I managed to catch was a cold. It was mid winter at the time, so I was hoping the weather would be more productive for fishing this time round.

Sham drew first blood on the crankbait with a 44cm largemouth bass.
259

I hooked up with my friend who lives and works in Osaka, Sham Piman who will also double up as my guide and translator to make the necessary arrangements. The lake is well connected by road, and it takes just over an hour by car from central Osaka. We reached the boat yard just before 7am, and waited for our pro angler guide, Mr. Shota Miyahiro, a friendly chap formerly backed by Nories. Mid April, it was supposed to be spring, as nearly all of the cherry blossoms had fallen and the sun was shining down on us, but the morning chill and the wind made it felt as if we were still in the middle of winter. Never mind that, I was hoping that 4 layers of clothing would do the trick and keep me warm.

Shota with a decent 61cm specimen on the rubber jig.

261

Now Im certainly no bass angler, my hands are more tuned to the fast retrieves and topwater action to tempt our tomans but for cold water largemouth bass, that fishing style was a recipe for disaster. The pro guide, fortunately, was really keen to show us the Biwa way of doing it. With technology on our side and his many years of experience, the knowledge handed down to us was invaluable (very grateful to Sham for translating everything though!). What actually transpired during the session was really not entirely about the fishing itself but rather a reminder to myself that there are so many methods capable of catching fish that needs to be learnt.

Well equipped professional bass boat!

263

My words would not do justice to describe the finer points of bass fishing. The session was basically brought down to 3 methods, the crankbait, the rubber jig and the swimbait. For the crankbaits, Miyahiro san would recommend a specific lure that would reach a certain depth. He would refer to his sonar and will point out either a 3m or 4m crankbait to be used. All it needs is a steady fast crank till the weeds are felt, a couple of upward twitches of the rod tip to lift the lure, and then a steady crank to ensure we would be cranking just above the bass filled weeds.

My 51cm bass which was hooked in injury time!

265

There will be specific areas that we were asked to use only rubber jigs. A good cast out till the jig hits the bottom and moving it real slow by lifting the rod. I found this hardest to do as one has to be extremely slow and patient while concentrating to feel for any shy bites. According to Miyahiro san, this technique normally sorts out the bigger fish at this time of year as he proved with a 61cm specimen which was hooked while he was demonstrating the technique to us! This particular technique too accounted for my personal best bass at 51cm. The swimbait method was probably the easiest to execute. Wait for the lure to hit bottom and just a slow, steady retrieve with the occasional twitch on the rod tip and Sham caught a nice specimen with his swimbait.

Bites were ultra shy on the rubber jigs.

267

Though the fight is unlike that of a tomans, and the bites are really shy, the experience itself is priceless. If youre a serious angler who likes different challenges and want to try out new fishing styles, the Biwako largemouth bass is worth considering. Japan is a 6 hour flight from KL and you can land in either Osaka Kansai Airport (recommended) or Tokyo Narita Airport (from Tokyo youll need another 3 hours on the bullet train). Its also a good opportunity to have a feel fishing from a fully equipped professional bass boat. Sham Piman can sort out all your fishing and touristy needs during your stay in Osaka with advice on the best period for your visit. The days fishing is approximately 30,000 inclusive of hotel pick-up but youll need to have a little extra for meals. You may contact him via Facebook: Sham Piman or email: shampiman@ gmail.com. Till then, tight lines!

Tired and cold after a hard day but good memories nevertheless.

Fishin-Tech

Bass Pro: The Strike Pro Angler

By Philemon Foo If you are one of those anglers that has long dreamt about
fishing in the Bass Tournament, this game is for you. It is absolutely fun and can be frustrating especially when you need money buy fishing tackle but you havent earn enough yet.

Game Play
You start off with the most basic setup and a little soft plastic worm. You also have one fishing spot opened to you. You are given a set of objectives to accomplish and every time you accomplish one of them you get paid a bonus. Your objectives are basically to catch fish and make money. The bigger the catch the more you get. There is also a tournament mode where you compete weekly for money (game money). To improve your game and to hit certain objectives you will have to purchase4 certain lures, scents, tackle upgrades, and new fishing spots. Every time you fish at a spot you will be charge some money (its like a licence to fish) for five minutes of fishing.

277

Emulating Fishing
You stand at the bow of your boat, move the marker to the area you want to cast to, and you tilt your mobile device to cast. The second you bait touches the water you get remark about your cast (not all the time). Then you see your lure sinking down with fish swimming around. You then reel and play the lure to attract the fish to bite. Certain fish may bite while most of them will investigate and swim away uninterested.

279

When you hook on to a fish, you need to strike by flipping your device upwards and the fight is on. Look out for your line tension as you reel in the line by drawing circles with your finger over the picture of a baitcasting reel. When you land the fish it automatically gets weight, photographed, and kept inside the live well. At the end of your fishing time, all the fishes in the live well will be weighed and scored, plus you get paid. The more money you earn the more lures you can purchase and the more variety of fish you will be able to catch.

281

Will I Be Addicted?
At the start it can get really frustrating especially when you dont have enough cash to purchase the things that you need. As you gain more cash (you also get free cash daily), you will be able to buy more items and then you will find yourself calling in sick, and not wanting to work. So yes, it can get really addictive and like all good games, self restriction must be enforced.

283

Would I Recommend it?

Heck, yeah! Download it right now. Even if you dont enjoy playing with it or you get too frustrated to the point that you are close to breaking your mobile device, yeah, download it. Keep it as a collection. When you run out of space then you can battle with your conscience whether to delete it or not.

285

Well, I like it. It is fun to catch all these fishes that we dont always get to catch. Furthermore its keeps you entertained. You could be playing this while you fish, catching fish while you are on your way to your fishing spot, or while you are travelling. I got this sneaky feeling that a lot of you will be playing it at work.
