17 July 2013 Dear Rider

Thank you for choosing our charity to support with your superhuman effort come race day!! Although we are a small charity we are aiming to make a big impact in the lives of some very special people at Pathways Roodepoort.

Who we are:
We are a group of friends who through our passion for different cycling forms have come together to participate in various cycling events to raise awareness and funds for Pathways Roodepoort. The culmination of our efforts would be to participate in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge to be held in November 2013.

Who they are:

Children who are afflicted with severe mental and physical impairments abound in all communities. They are however seldom catered for by schooling institutes or special care units and therefore become neglected and deprived of the care and stimulation that they require. Believing that these unique individuals cannot progress and learn, cannot be further from the truth and its for this reason that in Roodepoort, parents of children with special needs have formed Pathways Roodepoort, which is a stimulation centre for children with severe mental and physical impairments Pathways Roodepoort is a non profit organization (NPO 034-468) which officially opened in February 2005 and is currently renting a house in Wilropark. Pathways cater for children suffering a variety of serious conditions such as severe brain damage (Cerebral Palsy), Chromosome Disorders, Developmental Delay, Autism and Self Injurious Behaviour. Not only is Pathways Roodepoort a facility which provides a schooling environment specially geared for children with severe disabilities, but it is also a training facility for trainee carers who are taught under the guidance of the Pathways Roodepoort principal, as well as the Physiotherapist, the appropriate stimulation for children with serious disabilities. The training program covers all aspects of handling and working with the children and once the trainees have gained the necessary grounding they are considered for permanent employment to grow the Pathways staff compliment. Volunteer professionals, such as Speech therapists, Occupational therapists, Physiotherapists and Teachers also assist Pathways staff members with advice and practical guidance in designing appropriate stimulation and therapeutic programs for each child. Pathways aims to expand and extend it services in order to accommodate all children in our community, as well as provide a lifelong place of stimulation, pleasure and opportunity.

Their Objectives:
To provide a stable environment for the children where they are treated with love and respect so that they are continually reaching for their highest potential. Expertise of teachers and therapists to be harnessed in designing programs to suit each individual child. Provide a support system for parents where they can share information and gain support from others in a similar situation.
1

Provide training for our staff in our quest to provide the children with the best quality stimulation. To continually remain abreast of the latest trends and studies regarding the education and stimulation of children with severe impairments. Growth & development of the Centre.

Our aims this year:

We aim to have 100 riders in our charity bond participating in the main event. Last year we managed to meet the 50 riders target and hopefully we can better the target this year. We managed to donate over R100 000 to Pathways Roodepoort which is truly an amazing feat for which we thank each and every person that rode for and sponsored our efforts. This year we would like to better the R100 000 donation by at least 50% and we hope that youll be able to assist in this regard. To secure your entry under our charity bond we ask for a donation of R300 per rider which is separate from your race entry fee. The donated money together with any additional funds from our various efforts will be paid to Pathways Roodepoort on completion of the race. To run a stimulation and training centre such as Pathways Roodepoort is a great challenge and with costs rising at an alarming rate we need your help in raising awareness of the centre and to try and assist them in securing a continuous support base. In addition to the R300 rider donation we will be hosting additional fund raising efforts such as raffles and auctions on various internet forums and websites such as www.thehubsa.co.za or on our own Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PathwaysCycleChallenge). Dont forget to like the Facebook page for updated news and information.

What if I want to do something?

You are more than welcome to at your own cost host events to raise additional funds and the proceeds can be paid into our account at your leisure. The organisers of the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge will be handing a Red jersey to the person that managed to raise the most money for his/her charity. Here are a few ideas: You can get your family, friends and work colleagues involved, by challenging them to sponsor an amount for every kilometre you manage to cycle on the day of the race. You can organise a car wash at the office. You can host a Spinathon, High tea or even a Bring and Braai. The key is to be original and to have fun. Other ways to lend a hand directly to Pathways Roodepoort can be found on their website at: http://www.pathwaysroodepoort.org.za/lendahand.php

How do I enter the race?

You enter and pay for the race online at Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge in accordance with the organisers rules and requirements. Please note that there are a few different event types this year some of which are on different days so please make sure that you enter the right event. You are able to select the Cycling for Pathways charity bond under the Ride for a purpose tab and well automatically receive notification of your entry once youve paid your entry fee. We will approve your entry into our bond online once your donation has been received by us. Please forward us the completed registration form (last page of this letter) via email or fax so that we may capture your shirt size and contact details. We will be focussing our efforts on the main event which is the 94.7km race but we should have a small presence at the kids and MTB challenge a week or so earlier than the main event.

What if Ive entered already?

No problem. All we ask of riders wishing to ride for our charity bond is a R300 donation and once youve completed and returned the attached rider registration form well be able to allocate you into our charity bond from the online system.

Starting time
Our Charity Bond Cycling for Pathways has been registered with the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge and this means that we will be allocated a start time of between 08h00 and 08h25. This start time is much earlier than the start times for the non-seeded entrants who normally set off after 09h00. Great news as this means youd be hitting Heartbreak Hill and the N14 a little earlier and cooler this year! Finalisation of the charity start times occur in August and the earlier start only applies to the 94.7 km race and none of the other events.

What if I have a Seeding Index?

If you have an official Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge seeding index you will still be able to start in your seeded group even if this is an earlier start than the charity start time. You also have the option to start with other riders in a later batch. Therefore you can ride under our banner even if you are a professional racing snake.

What you get from us

A warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you will make a difference in a very special way!! In addition to that awesome feeling youll also get a Rapid Sport Cycling for Pathways branded cycle jersey and an Oh so handy! super duper drawstring bag perfect for those race day essentials. The total package is valued at a lot more than R300.

When is the cut-off?

To allow for lead time on the sponsored package we can only cater for these types of entries until 1 September 2013. After this date you are welcome to ride under our charity but you will unfortunately not receive the cycling jersey.
