The original EagleBurgmann made a quantum leap in mechanical seal technology when it introduced DiamondFaces in 2007. This new technology increases the service life of mechanical seals by a wide margin. Time between maintenance calls increases considerably, and life cycle costs are much lower. DiamondFaces technology offers significant value-add and boosts overall system performance in a whole range of oil & gas, refinery, chemical, slurry, pharmaceutical and water supply applications.

What do ship owners, oil sand production companies, microelectronics manufacturers, producers of ceramic sanitary ware and chemical companies have in common?

They all rely on DiamondFaces to keep their pumps, agitators and compressors running.

DiamondFaces on the high seas The diesel engine on a large ocean-going vessel does not require high-grade fuel. However, this places significant demands on the fuel supply systems. The pumps and seals have to be designed to handle the changeover from heavy oil to low-sulphur diesel fuel while the ship is underway. Changeover takes place, for example, when the ship sails into waters which are subject to stringent emission limits. EagleBurgmann has provided mechanical seals with a DiamondFaces coating for installation on a cruise ship to support changeover between different types of fuel.

Initial situation: Frequent dry running of the mechanical seals which resulted in excessive stress at the seal faces and secondary seals due to fuel grade variations. Corrective action: Installation of an M7S mechanical seal with DiamondFacesTM coating Result: Significant improvement in emergency running characteristics and drastic reduction in the temperatures which are generated during dry running. The seal has been running fault-free for more than 10,000 hours.

DiamondFaces at an oil sand eld Production in an oil sand field is a tough job, and the systems are exposed to extreme conditions. With the SAGD method (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage), oil is separated from the sand using steam pressure. The handling systems have to cope with an extremely abrasive mixture of oil, sand, water and steam. It is hardly surprising that the various components have to meet very demanding specs. A Canadian producer has decided to deploy multi-phase pumps and mechanical seals with DiamondFaces coatings.

Initial situation: Repeated failure of conventional mechanical seals due to insufficient lubrication and dry running caused by abrasive solids. API Plan 32 is not an option in this application. Corrective action: Deployment of an HJ4S1 mechanical seal with DiamondFaces coating Result: Improved dry running characteristics and extension of mechanical seal life by a factor of more than 25. The mechanical seals have been running fault-free for more than 8,500 hours.

DiamondFaces in microelectronic component production Microelectronic component manufacturing is a highly sophisticated and complex process which is performed in a cleanroom environment. A supply of ultra pure water is needed for some of the production steps. Any contamination in the water would damage the expensive, highly sensitive components. A French producer is one of the users who rely on EagleBurgmann mechanical seals with DiamondFaces coatings in the production process.

Initial situation: A pump is located in close proximity to the process, and no contamination is allowed in the ultra-pure water. Solution: Deployment of an HRC1 mechanical seal with DiamondFaces coating Result: DiamondFaces was easily able to exceed the application requirements because the coating is virtually wear-free. The application has been running fault-free for more than a year and a half.

DiamondFaces in ceramic sanitary ware production Slurry casting is one of the standard ceramic forming techniques. The range of applications includes prototype production right through to production of complex parts and very large monoblocks. One effect that is very noticeable in the pourable suspension is friction between the fluid and the solid particles. One manufacturer of sanitary ceramic ware uses a mixing and dispersing machine which has a mechanical seal with a DiamondFaces coating.

Initial situation: The mixing and dispersing process causes a rapid temperature rise at the seal faces, which results in adhesion of the suspension. Solution: Deployment of a Cartex-DN mechanical seal with DiamondFaces coating Result: The low-friction DiamondFaces coating reduces the temperature rise and avoids adhesion. The application has been running fault-free for more than a year.

DiamondFaces in terephthalic acid production Terephthalic acid is a basic chemical which is used in large quantities for the production of PET bottles/containers and many types of polyester fiber and other engineering plastics. Acetic acid and other constituents are mixed together during the production process. The highly viscous mixture has poor lubrication properties and contains very hard particles. High-performance equipment is needed to handle this tough application. EagleBurgmann has installed mechanical seals with DiamondFaces coatings on an existing pump at a production site in Belgium.

Initial situation: Due to the harsh properties of the media, conventional mechanical seals failed repeatedly after a short period of time. Corrective action: Deployment of an M7 mechanical seal with DiamondFaces coating Result: The mechanical seal with DiamondFaces coating runs without problems despite the harsh media. The seal has been running fault-free for more than 18 months.
