Compare Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows 98 System Builders Preinstallation Kit (SBK)

The preinstallation of Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition operating system is similar to the preinstallation of the original release of Windows 98. While the basic process is the same, there are some important pProduct, and System Builder Preinstallation Kit (SBK) differences. This white paper deals with those differences. For more complete information, please refer to the System Builder Preinstallation User's Guide found in every genuine copy of Windows 98 Second Edition mulipack from an Authorized Distributor. Product differences:
The product differences between the two editions of the operating systems are highlighted in the following matrixtable. SBK- related differences:


The following differences are present in the way the OPKWIZ program behaves., Tthe text also addresses distinctions that exists between the preinstallation process for Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows 98. The wizard for Windows 98 Second Edition has 3three more screens compared tothan the Wwizard in Windows 98 does. (There were 15 screens for the wizard in the first edition wizard.) The three additional screens in Windows 98 Second Edition are: Customize Internet Explorer Select ISP Signup Option Customize Windows Welcome In Configure Legacy Device Class Detection, under the details of the sound, midi, or video capture card,, one new device class is had been added to the default list;, previously there were 8eight classes. In the Windows 98 Setup Options screen, now there are now two radio buttons and one check box, (the golden release hadas opposed two check boxes of the Golden Release). The functionality essentially has essentially remained the same. The application preinstallation launcher screen has one less default entry than what it had in the first edition. Setup printer has been taken out of the new application preinstallation launcher. Radio Station Guide URL Web Events URL The Customize Internet Explorer screen is new to the wizard in Windows 98 Second Edition. Default URLs for home page,, search page, and help page can now be added automatically to the version of Internet Explorer 5 that is now preinstall-able with Windows 98 Second Edition. The same page also provides functionality to add a specialized browser toolbar as a part of the Internet Explorer 5 customization process. Clicking the AddDD button brings up a screen with five5 edit boxes to be filled out to correctly install a custom toolbar. The Select ISP Signup Option, is another new screen in the Windows 98 Second Edition wizard,; it lets the System Builder decide how to handle ISP signup during the Windows Welcome process. There are 4Four radio buttons specifying the 4 four options provided to the customer. If the 4th fourth radio button (Display a precached list of ISP offers) is selected, then an edit box needs to be filled out, with the path to the directory where the cache files are residing. The program looks for a file called IspsgnupIspsgnup.htm in the specified folder. There is an option to specify a secondary set of ISP signup files; this is designed for end users who skip the ISP signup offer during Windows Welcome. The second set is launched when the user clicks the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. If this check box is checkedselected, then a similar path needs to be provided. This time a file called Dtsgnup.htm is searched for in the specified directory.

File differences:
File differences are noted for two separate cases:, once wWhen the complete SBK tools are extracted using Mkcwrt.exe. The other case is, wWhen a preload boot floppy diskies (PBF) is made using the respective SBK wizards and Mkpbf.bat. ENDUSEREnduser.inf: In the new version of the EnduserEnduser.inf file, the registry entry for the Welcome.exe file is commented out. MSBATCHMsbatch.inf: The flag Displchar is now active in the new Msbatch.inf, along with some other settings like Primary logon, and Windows Address book, etc. OEMAUDITOemaudit.inf: There are a lot of differences in Oemaudit.inf, most of themly related to the channel bar and Windows Welcome (Oout -of- bBox Eexperience, or OOBE). Oeminfo.ini: In Oeminfo.ini the version information for the OS is different;, it actually says Microsoft Win98 Second Edition. Opkinput.inf: Opkinput.inf from the Windows 98 Second Edition has ISP signup signup related lines. Opkwiz.hlp and Sbguide.doc: These documents now, in general, contain more information than they used to. Transfer.bat: The new Transfer.bat file includes extra lines to copy some CBS channel files and also some OOBE- related files, most important, thely Oobeinfo.ini file.
