Membership
Membership in the Institute is achieved by satisfying the academic requirements as defined in the syllabus of the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS), completing the application form, paying the prescribed application fee and the membership category fee. The category of membership awarded is dependent on academic qualifications and approved working experience. The various categories of membership are: Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) A member who has completed all of the academic and working experience qualifications of the Institute together with the Test of Professional Experience (TPE). Associate Quantity Surveyor (a) A person who has completed the educational requirements for a Professional Quantity Surveyor as defined in the CIQS syllabus or equivalent but has not completed the required two (2) years experience for the Test of Professional Experience (TPE), or (b) A person who has attained the equivalent of PQS through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Quantities) (RICS), Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS), Quantity Surveyors Institute of New Zealand (NZIQS) or Association of Quantity Surveyors of South Africa (ASAQS) designation but has not completed one (1) year of North American work experience and has not completed the applicable TPE requirements, or (c) A person who has at least one (1) year of approved industry experience and has credit for at least nine of the Institute's subjects or equivalent and who is undertaking to complete the educational requirements of the Institute, or (d) A person who has been admitted to sit the direct final examinations, or (e) A person who has been admitted to complete the mature candidate entry requirements, or (f) A member who has been designated as a CEC and has completed the educational requirements for a Professional Quantity Surveyor as defined in the CIQS syllabus or equivalent but who has not completed the one (1) year's diarized experience for the Test of Professional Experience. Construction Estimator Certified (CEC) A member who has completed all the academic requirements as defined in the CIQS syllabus or equivalent and the two (2) years approved North American industry experience qualifications required by the Institute for the designation CEC. Associate Construction Estimator (a) A person who has credit for at least nine of the Institute's subjects as defined in the CIQS syllabus or equivalent and has not completed all the experience qualifications required by the Institute for the designation CEC, or (b) A person who has been admitted to sit the direct final examinations. Student - Part Time A person in a part time approved program of studies or a person who has a minimum of high school graduation and is studying towards passing the Institute's examinations and has credit for less than nine of the Institute's examinations and who is undertaking to complete the educational requirements of the Institute and is employed full time. Student - Full time A person registered in a full time approved program of studies or a person who has a minimum of high school graduation and is studying towards passing the Institute's examinations.
Education
a) The academic requirement for entry in the OIQS is based on the syllabus as defined by the CIQS. There are 3 divisions Architectural, Mechanical and Electrical with 25 subjects in each division. These subjects are split into 3 levels - Level 100, 200 and 300. Refer to the CIQS web site (www.ciqs.org) for details on each syllabus. The CIQS offers examinations for most of these subjects twice yearly. A recent accreditation exercise was undertaken by the OIQS. In total, 60 construction related programs were reviewed 59 in Ontario & 1 in USA. Of these 60 programs, 9 achieved the level 4 (full) accreditation - Algonquin College (1), Fanshawe College (1), George Brown College (2), Lawrence Technological University, USA (1), Mohawk College (2), Niagara College (1) and Ryerson University (1). All other programs will be assessed upon application to the Institute. These included local and overseas educational programs as well as trade certifications. CCA Gold Seal Estimators are accepted as CECs and are subject to special examination conditions for their PQS. Equivalent professional qualification is subject to special work experience and TPE requirements. Direct Finalist examinations are available for direct entry as CEC and PQS. Applicants must be at least 35 years old with at least 15 years of approved working experience. Special examination and TPE requirements apply. Mature Candidate examination is available for direct entry as PQS. Applicants must be at least 35 years old with at least 20 years of approved working experience. Special examination and TPE requirements apply.
