Date: 07.20.2013 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign Objectives: Learn the importance of Branding. Design consistent logos for both a letterhead and business card. Use basics of Illustrator and InDesign Process: I started out by creating a layout in InDesign and decided on a Brand for this company. I decided that simplicity was best for this design and brought in simple tracings and a logo fro Illustrator. I reversed the text to make more striking and readable information.

Learn the importance of Branding. Design consistent logos for both a letterhead and business card. Use basics of Illustrator and InDesign

Process:

I took the basic branding already present on the business card and made a header and footer for the page. I then incorporated all relevant information and reversed the text to match the brand. I created a watermark by making paths with the footsteps and changing the opacity. I also incorporated the original inspiration for the logo by putting a step-pattern into the watermark.

Programs/Tools Used: Objectives:

Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop/ Microsoft Word

Learn how to design a folding duplex layout. Use Text wrap. Incorporate multiple Adobe Programs

Process:

I decided on a theme and a company to highlight in the brochure then decided what layout would best fit my needs. I started by setting up guides and margins to accommodate my intended design. I then searched for Images that I needed and from the images drew up a snazzy new logo for this company. I used a nice old school dance pattern for the cover and decided to draw people in with a single question. On the inside I carefully set up the pictures to add to the flow of the document and add a friendly yet professional appeal to it. I used pictures that I personally took and edited them in Photoshop and then manipulated part of the cover image to add interest and theme to the inside as well. The trickiest part of the whole process what working between all the programs and pulling images and vectors between InDesign and Illustrator

Programs/Tools Used: Objectives:

Adobe InDesign/ Microsoft Word

Learn how to use Adobe InDesign and understand basic design principles such as alignment, proximity, contrast and repetition.

Process:

Started out with a few sketches of the basic layout, as soon as I saw this picture I had the idea to do this gradient with the right aligned text. But I kept an open mind and played around with a few other ideas. As I started working in the program I was able to play around quite a bit and did and, surprise surprise, I liked my original idea the best! The hardest thing for me was figuring out what to do with the title still dont quite love it, but I think it works.

Logos
Description:
This was a project to get us familiar with Adobe Illustrator and to teach us how to design different logos.

Date:

06.11.2013

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives: Process:

Learn the basics of Illustrator and how to design an effective logo.

I started by taking a company name that I had been playing around with for awhile and then decided on what Icon would refer to this company and started playing around with the pen tool making some shapes. I played around a lot with different strokes, fills and effects just so I could better understand how they worked. It was actually frustrating at first because of the different layers and selections it required. I feel like I learned a lot in the first 2 logos. On the last logo I created I decided to try and just make a text logo and learned how to process and manipulate individual letters.

How the logo represents the company:

By taking symbols of the industry and incorporating them into the logo. Also by the loud color designs it grabs the attention of target audience.

Profile Image
Description:
This was a project I undertook to assist with a companies Facebook page as they were preparing to leave on a international tour.

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: Process:

To effectively represent company in the social media world.

I began by taking photographs that would represent the companies current emphasis. After settling on one that was aesthetic and clear, I pulled their logo and name into it and cropped it down to the appropriate parameters.

Objectives:

How to use masks in Photoshop. How to blend images and add styles to text.

Process:

Decided what quote I wanted to use in my poster, then went on a web search for images that I though wold go along with it. After finding quite a few good ones, I chose a relatively low key image for the background and cropped it to 8.5 x 11 and added an Accented Edges filter to it. I then set up a couple masks and positioned my other two images and started to blend them with the brush tool at 100% opacity for the edges then between 1240% opacity for the finer blending. The trickiest part for me was trying to place the text. I had to play with the alignment a lot and even rotate the masked images to fix the flow and make more room for the text. The last thing I did was emphasize part of the text and put a style on it that played into the DJ theme.

Programs/Tools Used:
Canon Rebel T4i Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn how to select and de-saturate sections of photos. Explore the basic rules of photography.

Process:

I had a photo shoot with my friend and colleague Camille in a studio and had some huge windows that let in lots of natural light. I was using my Canon T4i and we had got some really nice shots. I brought a few of them into Photoshop and finally settled on this one to edit because of the intimacy of the shot and the personality it captured. I cropped it to 66 and desaturated everything but the lips, but after seeing the effect I decided there was a lot more potential in this shot. I brought back some color in the hair, which was a little tricky, and slightly re-saturated the background. It produced a nice gradient effect that really tied the picture together. For a final touch I put a Paint Daub filter on the whole image to add more texture and soften the transitions between the saturated and de-saturated selections.

Webpage
Description:
A web page made for an assignment under the pretense of showcasing a logo. But I dont think I would really make a website for 1 logo...

Programs/Tools Used:
Notepad++ InDesign

Objectives:

How to organize HTML documents when creating them. How to change fonts and colors using CSS and link them into a HTML doc. That validation is useful when creating HTML and CSS.

Process:

This was a fairly straightforward assignment. The Comm department pretty much gave us the template and everything else we needed. We just needed to learn how to write a few basic things in HTML and CSS and how the information should be organized . I basically just followed the instructions they gave us and this is what happened. Pretty magical right?

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to a random event where we had to use only Microsoft Word and a scanner to try and make something catchy.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 01 Eric Lybbert

Programs/Tools Used:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

Learn the basics of Microsoft Word and how to scan images at the correct resolution to import into documents

Process:

I scanned in the image in several different PPIs so I had multiple samples to work from. I then tried the different sizes in my Ad to see which would work the best. From there I just tried to determine what kind of event I wanted to promote and decided how I should group my Info. Frankly I dont love it, but Im unsure how else to manipulate the elements in word without it looking cheesy. I would have liked to arrange the images a little differently, but manipulating them in Word is difficult.
