Carlos Palacio 15-4-2013 Annotated Bibliography 1) Influencia de los rabes en las artes y literatura espaola.

Jos Amador de los Rios. Boletn de la Real Academia de la Historia, tome 8 (1898), pp. 539-552 This is a speech given to the Real Academia Espaola by a reknowned historian. In it, the author gives a historical overview of the development of Iberian culture, starting from the fall of the Western Toman Empire, and ending with the Reconquista. He places particular emphasis on the role which Arabs and Arabian culture played in this development. In will therefore use this text as a reference for historical facts. 2) La influencia rabe en Espaa. Jos Luis Vega Encabo. Colegiul Naional Unirea Press, Braov, Romania, 2011. This text gives a short summary of the many ways in which the Iberian arts were influenced by the Arabian presence. I will use this text, along with La influencia musulmana en la cultura hispanocristiana, to give information regarding literary themes and genres which the Spanish inherited from Arabic literature. 3) Las huellas del Islam a debate. Maribel Fierro This text goes into great depth about the political systems used at the time in the Iberian Peninsula, and how each people, Christian, Arab and Jew, borrowed from each other to create hybrid political organizations. It then goes back to tie this into the arts, and makes certain imprtant points about the appearance of Arabian political structures in Christian governments. 4) La influencia musulmana en la cultura hispano-cristiana medieval. Luis Tefilo Gil Cuadrado. Anaquel de Estudios rabes, vol. 13 (2002), pp. 37-65 This is a more complete analysis of Arabic cultural contributions to Christian Spanish culture, including literature. It especially goes a great deal into recurring themes shared by both literary traditions, and also into how the complex and strained relations between these two people are depicted in literature. 5) Los moros en El Quijote. Javier de la Puente Snchez. Foro de Educacin volume 9 (2007), pp. 37-45 As the name may suggest, this text analyzes the role Moors play in Don Quijote. It takes into account facts about the author's life, and the cultural context of post-Reconquista Spain, to justify the role which Cervantes gives to Moorish characters. I will use this text to illustrate post-Reconquista Spanish opinions of the Moors, and how they varied.

6) Islamic influence on Spanish literature: Benengeli's Pen in Don Quijote. Islamic Studies 45:4 (2006), pp. 579 593 This text, also about Don Quijote, focuses specifically on literary themes which appear in Don Quijote which are clearly of Arabic insipration. In it, the author argues that this, along with other factors, show how profoundly Spain has been influenced by Arabian culture, and so attempts to explain why the rest of Europe considers Spain to be different.
