Thank you members and the brethren who withdrew their nominations thus paved way for electing Management Committee in a consensual manner. It is emphasised often that any SERVICE created must have MAXIMUM utilisation, apart from the ROI angle. This astute observation need to be proved by your regular participation in all club activities and offering your valuable comments. IT IS OUR CLUB and has enough scope for improvement to serve you still better. We started our tenure with a sad note of passing heartfelt condolence on the untimely death of thousands of innocent pilgrims in the floods and landslides of Kedarnath and Badrinath in Uttrakand. Our prayers to the Almighty to rest them in Peace. There are no words to express the unimaginable sorrow our nation feels today for the families of those who have lost their lovedones in this Man made disaster. Our committee on 25th June called on Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Rajaram. After according cordial welcome, he expressed that most of the research, teaching, findings etc., do not get due commercial capitalisation. Effort must be taken to implement the advancements in research at the grass root level. Alumni members must seek viable solutions for the betterment of the society and particularly for the future generation. We also greeted Prof. Dr. S. Ganesan, new Registrar i/c on his assumption of office. You are aware that we have installed Rooftop Solar Panels (10 kW ON GRID) and they are saving approximately 1200 units of our energy bill monthly, if not more. Harnessing GREEN ENERGY from Kitchen Waste and Grey and Ground Water Harvesting for gardening, planting more flowering plants etc., are on the top most of the agenda of House Keeping Committee Member Er. P. Sairam. Er. M.A. Murugan Catering Committee Member is a vivid observer for many years of the club activities and member needs. He knows the pulse of our members and their family. He is fully geared up with schemes to raise the threshold

level of your satisfaction. Your suggestions and comments will immensely support him in his endeavour. Drawing advantage of continuity as Committee Member Sports Er. Premkumar has started working on his portfolio from the day one itself. Newly laid wooden flooring in the shuttle court provides a class of an experience to the players. Have you visited our GYM? Well, we have new equipments, experienced trainer, good ambience and above all affordable tariff. You must be aware that we have an arrangement for members, spouses and wards to use the Swimming Pool Facility at Anna University. Committee Member Entertainment Prof. Dr. S. Selladurai has great plans for Entertainment events ably supported by ethnic food festivals. Apart from routine screening fresh arrivals he has variety entertainments slated for every month. Why dont you share / toot your horn of the achievement of you and your family. Recently one of our members narrowly escaped from being conned by CREDIT CARD Racketeers. He is an entrepreneur, Structural Consultant and Academician and has more than 35 years of Industrial and Academic experience. Was President (2011-12) and Committee Member Entertainment (2009 10). Vice President Prof. Dr. D. Arivuoli, M.Sc. Materials Science (1983) Ph.D (1988), College of Engineering, Anna University. An avid researcher was ICTP fellow, Italy, Commonwealth fellow, UK, Erasmus Mundus Euro4India Fellowship, Italy and Visiting Professor, MANA, NIMS, Tsukuba, Japan. His work on nanoindentation is referred in literature as Arivuoli et al model. He is presently the Chairman Sports Board. Secretary Er. E. Sivakumar, B.Tech Chemical Engineering (1979) AC Tech. M.B.A from Madras University (1989). Started his career with Madras Fertilizers and after various stints in Production, Marketing, Process Engineering, Fabrication, etc... spanning 25 years has presently engaged in Civil Construction for the last 6 years. Was Treasurer (2011-12) and Committee Member - Sports (2009 -10). Treasurer Prof. J. Sriram, DMIT 22nd Batch Electronics (1973), PGDM (1977) I.I.M, Ahmadabad. He has served in various senior assignments and the last being in Blue Star. Presently he is an academician and pursuing his PhD. Was Vice President (1994-95). He has completed B.Sc and M.Sc degree in Physics from Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy and joined as a UGC Research fellow in Physics Department CEG, Anna University in 1985. Presently he is Professor of Physics and Deputy Chairman University Sports Board. Was Committee Member Catering 2011-12. Committee Member Catering Er. M.A. Murugan, B.E. Industrial Engineering (1988), CEG. M.B.A (Finance) Rutgers, State University of New Jersey. He is a certified consultant in SAP - Finance and Control. Computer Science (1994) Montana State University.He is currently Senior Director Sustainability at Cognizant Technology Solutions. ANNA UNIVERSITY

e take pleasure in welcoming and introducing Prof. Dr. M. Rajaram M.E., Ph.D, the new Vice-Chancellor of Anna University to our members. He was born on 4th June 1958 to illustrious parents Thiru. Marimuthu and Thirumathi. M.Seenithaiyammal in Theni district. He obtained his B.E., degree in 1981 in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Alagappa Chettiyar College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi. He started his career in 1982, with a passion for teaching and research, as a lecturer in Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli. Subsequently, he obtained in 1988 his M.E degree in Power Systems from Government College of Technology, Coimbatore. With strong technical knowledge and analytical vehemence he obtained his Ph. D degree from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore in 1994 at the age of 32. He was deputed to Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai to administer the

admission process of students into engineering colleges, polytechnics and catering technologies in Tamilnadu. During his teaching tenure, Dr. M. Rajaram had headed the departments of Electrical and Electronics and Computer Science and Engineering at various Government Engineering Colleges in Tamilnadu. By virtue of his versatile and rich academic experience, he acquired the position as Vice Chancellor of Anna University of Technology Tirunelveli (AUT-T). Being an active researcher, Dr. M. Rajaram has research association with Universities like New South Wales University, Australian National University, La Trobe University, Edith Cowan University, University of Western Australia, MurDoch University, Curtin University, University of Malaysia, and International Association for Engineers (Hongkong). His contributions in the area of Computer Networks, High Voltage Engineering,

Measurement and Instrumentation, Adaptive Controller, Electro-Magnetic Theory and Intelligent Computing are well recognised through his 157 publications in reputed research journals, 111 research publications in International Conferences, 73 research publications in National Conferences, more than 100 technical reports and 6 technical books that he has authored/co-authored. As a research guide, Dr. Rajaram produced 24 PhDs (besides 6 who are awaiting evaluation reports) and 4 M.S. in various fields. At present 10 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. under his direct supervision. Dr.M.Rajaram and his wife Mrs.R.Arunmozhi, B.A., are blessed with a daughter, Dr.R.Keerthana Brattiya, M.B.B.S, (M.D) and a son, Mr.R.Vignesh Marimuthu B.E, M.B.A (UK).

Last year we had a busy schedule with a number of different intra & inter-club tournaments. This year we will also strive to revive the Anna University Students-Staff-Club Triangular Tournaments in various sports to promote more interaction with the club members and university students and staff.

Bridge

The Bridge team was active during the summer. They first organized the Black Label tournament which was won by Prabhukumar & Jothimani (Kannan). The second place was jointly held by Shankar & Baskar and Mani & Sriram. The prizes were distributed by our President Dr. Chandra Sekaran.

Then they conducted the AGM Tournament on 23rd June after the AGM. First prize was won by Subba Rao & Mohana Krishna. Vasu & Harini came second and Prabhu & Kannan achieved third place. The prizes were distributed by our Secretary E. Sivakumar on July 5th. Alumni Club team is now off to Corbett Park to participate in the All India Madhava Prasad Memorial Bridge Tournament conducted under the auspices of Bridge Federation of India from 11th July to 14th July 2013 at The Riverview Retreat, Ramnagar. We wish them success in this national tournament.

Shuttle

The summer camp conducted from April 22 to May 12 by Chennai Badminton Academy was a grand success with several kids being trained by top coaches Siddharth Jain, T. Maran, Deenu and Thomas Kurien. Just after the camp the court #2 was completely re-laid with state of the art technology to improve visibility, grip and reduce shock to the knees. The spanking new court has been appreciated by many. We invite you to play in our world-class courts to not only get some exercise but also to make new friends. But please do wear nonmarking badminton shoes to protect the court surfaces.

Customized furniture If its a childs room, the furniture has to be customized to suit their needs. Cots now come in myriad shapes and forms, sometimes in elaborate designs to give your childs room a whole new transformation. A study table should be simple yet neat to induce your child to get into the learning mode. Safety first Safety is an important aspect, especially if it is a childs room. Ensure that the cushions and any other piece of furniture dont have harmful elements. Creative corner A childs room is an area to unleash their creativity. Ensure that there is a corner in the room where your child can do so, without the fear of being scolded. A play pen is one area where your children can indulge in their flights of fantasy to a faraway kingdom while playing with their toys. Or, if your child loves to scribble on the walls (and, most children do), earmark one wall for this purpose to serve as their space to let their artistic streak flow. If a scribble on the wall cant be cleaned, just put a picture frame over that area and voila! You have a priceless piece of art done by your dear child.

Raj Kumar Gupta, director of the critically acclaimed Aamir (2008) and No one Killed Jessica (2011) fails to stir the box office with his newest venture Ghanchakkar starring unlikely duo Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan. While the film is as much about marital problems as about a bank heist booty gone missing, the only thing that salvages an erratic script and half-baked characterization is the generous dose of black comedy along the lines of Jane Bhi Do Yaaron or Is Raat Ki Koi Subah Nahi. Sanju (Hashmi) a reluctant robber agrees to pull off a bank

heist with two rogues Pundit (Sharma) and Idris (Das) to please his fashion-obsessive, boisterous Punjabi wife Neetu (Vidya) who wants money to live a better life. After the robbery, the trio decides to lie low for three months and let Sanju hide the money. Things take a turn when Sanju loses his memory after an accident and cannot remember where he stashed the loot. True to its name, the film tries to portray each characters quirkiness from Neetus outrageous sense of fashion to Sanjus somnolent memory loss and Pundit and Idris comic-evil personas. The films redemption lies in the way it elicits fun in the most unlikely situations. The robbers wear paper masks of Amitabh Bacchan, Dharmendra and Utpal Dutt to loot the bank, Idris and Sanju discuss TV models on the phone at a crucial moment

in the plot; from Neetus cooking to phone-calls from Sanjus mom and the vegetable man on the train, the domestic drama that ensues as Pundit and Das shift into Sanjus house is a laugh riot at times and downright insipid at others. With side-splitting performances from Rajesh Sharma and Namit Das, one wonders how much better the film would have fared had the gap between scripting and filming been effectively bridged. The first half is definitely tighter and racier while the film slumps in the second half and jolts to a halt with an abrupt ending. Although the climax is intended to have the audience linger in the murky aura of black comedy, what remains is a sense of suspicion that in spite of strong lead performances and supporting roles, maybe the movie didnt get its act right this time.

An astounding proliferation that goes far beyond human control causes the United Nations to summon Gerry Lane (Pitt), an ex-UN employee who embarks on a journey around the world to determine the root cause of the pandemonium. Interspersed with racy action sequences, this loose adaptation of the highly popular Max Brooks novel by the same name fares well

as an edge-of-the-seat thriller, barring a few glaringly predictable moments. Complete with crows feet and bags under his eyes Brad Pitt looks every bit his age and essays the role with his usual aplomb. He is the larger than life, one-dimensional hero who escapes the wrath of the zombies numerous times and survives a deadly plane crash. He must travel alone in his quest to save the world, as is clearly evident in the finale. The minions strictly cannot share screen space, neither can they lend their wit or chivalry. With its breathtaking visuals and well crafted CG the movie somehow manages to strike a chord with both the zombie-genre aficionados and others alike. our years have passed since I started to write a topic once a month in my blog ssekar. blogspot.com starting from January 2009. I should say it was eventful and the responses from the readers and my well-wishers were enthralling and I went into ecstasy. What I had started as a hobby has ended up in a habit making me continue my journey of writing about different subjects that we encounter in everyday life. A careful analysis of the happenings around us and making midway corrections will bring a change in a person and give him ananda or bliss. Here I am pleased to exchange my thoughts on the word I in a poetic form. If I am I, because I am I And you are you because you are you Then I am and you are. But If I am I, because you are you And you are you because I am I Then Im not and youre not But we are not. The alphabet I when spelt makes you get into agankara (ego) mode and induces you into a feeling that you (refers to I) are great and can surmount any obstacles that you come across in your daily mundane life. In reality, it is that

supreme power or the bagawan or the almighty that helps us to surmount any difficulty that we are posed with at all times. Until this realization sets in to your mind, you will be an ignorant human being. If you have good thoughts you will attract good things and if you have diseased thought you will attract disease. Thinking of god and chanting the mantra Om will keep us in good stead at all times as we have the protection of the almighty. An underlying philosophy comes to my mind while I am writing this page. It is interesting and thought provoking as it conveys the truth and brings out the fact of life. It goes like this:The rain it raineth on the just and also on the unjust fella but chiefly on the just because the unjust steals the justs Umbrella. If we understand this, we become realized souls and start appreciating what is happening to us including the twists and the turns of everyday life that we encounter. We should bear in mind that at any cost we should not give up our efforts in fulfilling our goals and aspirations. We should not quit until we succeed. I am reminded of a Poem, which I am pleased to share with everyone.

Recent News: Asiana Plane Crash: Two Black Boxes Recovered Investigators have recovered both black boxes from a passenger plane which crash landed at San Francisco International Airport killing two teenagers.

Black box: This is a device used to assist investigation into aircraft accidents. These are lone survivors in most of the accidents. Black box has two parts, a cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and a flight data recorder (FDR). These recorders are fully automatic with memory that would store hours of pilot voice and instrument readings up to the moment of any accident. It automatically erases old records to provide space for fresh entry. Most of the black boxes use solid state memory boards that are much reliable than magnetic tapes. Cockpit voice recorders (CVRs)and Flight data recorders (FDRs) in commercial airplanes continuously record information and can be immensely helpful to determine the cause of a crash. The deepest a flight recorder has been recovered was the case of South African Airways Flight 295, where the cockpit voice recorder was recovered 16,000 feet (4,900 m) under the ocean. However, there are many cases where recovered recorders did not definitively identify the cause of a crash. Recorders may be recovered, but too damaged to read or have blanks.

All the microphones in the cockpit are connected to the CVR where the recordings are digitized and stored. The FDR registers information about speed, altitude direction and other relevant details during flight. Data from the CVR and FDR is stored on stacked memory boards inside the crash-survivable memory unit (CSMU). These memory boards are insulated and protected by three layers of materials in the CSMU in a solid state black box. All the data collected by the airplanes sensors is sent to the flight data acquisition unit at the front of the aircraft. The flight data acquisition unit is the middle manager of the entire data recording process. It takes information from sensors and sends it to the black box. Black boxes are powered by one of two power generators that draw power from planes engines. Black box is usually installed at the tail of the plane to increase their chances of survival. Though called black box it is usually painted in bright orange or yellow.
