HAIRPIN LACE INSTRUCTIONS

The following instructions are taken from American Thread Co. 1955

Hairpin lace may be worked on a regular straight hairpin or a hairpin lace staple. If the hairpin is not wide enough and a staple hard to purchase, one can readily be made by bending a piece of wire. The width of hairpin lace depends on the width of the staple used. The work is done with a crochet hook. Combined with crochet, many beautiful dainty designs can be developed. Threads recommended for this work are the "STAR" Tatting Crochet, "GEM" Crochet Cotton or "STAR" Crochet Cotton. Use "DAWN" Yarns for Stoles, Afghans, Hats and other wool items.

Make a loop at end of thread and place 1 prong of staple in loop just made, insert hook in loop, wind thread around right prong of hairpin staple, thread over hook and draw through loop keeping work at center of staple, * drop loop from hook, turn staple 1/2 turn to the left, pick up the dropped loop at center, thread over hook and pull through loop, insert hook through top part of loop on left hand prong, thread over and pull through (2 loops on hook), thread over end pull through both loops completing the single crochet, repeat from * for length desired. EDGING No. 1 Work Hairpin lace for length desired. In crocheting keep the twist in the loops. Across one side work an s c in each loop. SCALLOP: 1st Row-Attach thread through first 4 loops, on opposite side, ch 3, 1 d c in some space, ch 3, 2 d c in some space, * 2 d c through next 4 loops, ch 3, 2 d c in same space (shell), repeat from * across row, turn. 2nd Row-* Ch 2, 4 d c with ch 2 between each d c in next shelf, ch 2, s c between shells, repeat from * across row. EDGING No. 2 Work a length of Hairpin lace. Join thread in 3 loops of lace, ch 2, d c in same space, ch 2, 2 d c in some space, * 2 d c through next 3 loops, ch 2, 2 d c in same space (shell) , repeat from * across length. 2nd Row-S c in I st shell, * ch 2, 7 tr c with ch I between each tr c in next shell, ch 2, s c in next shell, repeat from * across length, cut thread and repeat 1st row on other side of edging. Pattern No. 3 Work Hairpin lace for length desired. Join thread in 3 end loops and work I s c in some space, * ch 5, 1 s c over next 3 loops, repeat from * once, * * ch 5, 1 s c through next 9 loops, * ch 5, 1 s c over next 3 loops, repeat from * twice, repeat from ** across length. Join thread in first 9 loops of opposite side and work in some manner as first side reversing the clusters. EDGING No. 4 Work a length of Hairpin lace. Join thread in 3 loops of lace and work 1 s c, * ch 3, s c through next 3 loops, repeat from * across length and repeat on other side of lace, cut thread, do not turn. SCALLOP-Attach thread in 1 st loop, ch 3, * thread over, insert in same space and work off 2 loops, repeat from * and work off all loops 2 at a time, * ch 6, 3 d c in next loop keeping last loop of each d c on hook, thread over and work off remaining loops 2 at a time, repeat from * across length. Pattern No. 5 Work 2 lengths of Hairpin lace the length desired. Join thread in 2 end loops of first length and work 1 s c in some space, * ch 2, 1 s c over 2 corresponding loops of second length, ch 2, 1 s c over next 2 loops of first length, repeat from * across length. 2nd Row: EDGE-Join thread in 2 end loops of lace, 1 s c in some space, * ch 5, slip st in 3rd st from hook for picot, ch 2, 1 s c over next 2 loops, repeat from " across length. Work other side to correspond.
