possible closure of the park,
township manager Chris Schultz
said at last weeks council meet-
ing.
Skateboards are certain days
and bikes certain days. They are
disregarding that and are enter-
ing the park on the days they are
not supposed to be in there,
Schultz said. The other concern
is they are not using personal
safety equipment like helmets.
Schultz noted how uncool
kids think it is to wear equip-
ment, with firsthand experience
as the father of an 11-year-old.
But its even less cool to get
hurt, Schultz said.
The conversation stemmed
from the Burlington County
Joint Insurance Fund renewal
presentation.
According to Schultz, an in-
jury may cost more than it cost to
build the park, which was re-
opened last year with the assis-
tance of a $250,000 grant from the
county.
Schultz would close the park
up to 30 days, but is hoping it
doesnt come to that.

rules, Schultz said.
The park was planned as an
unsupervised one, citing the lack
of staff to oversee guests.
Its a great facility but its a
very risky sport, Schultz said.
We have to be prepared for that
one [incident] that could come to
us.
Schultz is asking for changes,
otherwise hell be forced to close
the park.
The amenity is there for the
publics enjoyment, but we also
have to ensure the township's lia-
bility exposure is limited,
Schultz said.
There is no plan to permanent-
ly close the park.

Police Lt. Jeffrey Wagner pro-
vided council with an overview
of the Hazard Mitigation Plan-
ning Process and how it will help
homeowners in the long run.
According to Wagner, the plan-
ning process only includes natu-
ral hazards, fire, winter storms,
flooding and how infrastructure
will be affected.
Storms happen, and we need
to take a look at those hazards
and see what we can do about it
to brace those properties, Wagn-
er said.
The township has gotten less
than two inches of rain, and cer-
tain areas flooded anyway. We

of George M. Morris of the firm's
Mount Laurel office.
Morris concentrates his prac-
tice in the areas of municipal and
government relations, public con-
tracting and education.
He presently serves as town-
ship solicitor for Southampton
Township, special counsel for
Lumberton Township and munic-
ipal prosecutor for Medford Town-
ship.
Morris was recently elected to
chair of the New Jersey State Bar
Associations Local Government
Section. Morris has extensive ex-
perience with handling complex
matters concerning open space
initiatives, acquisition, and regu-
latory oversight helping clients
work through administrative hur-
dles to protect and preserve open
space, recreation, farmland and
historic locations.
Morris is a frequent lecturer on
Open Public Meetings Act and
Open Public Records Act issues.
Before earning his law degree,
Morris served as a municipal
manager and as a member of the
municipal utilities authority.
Morris also served as a legisla-
tive staff member in the United
States House of Representatives.
Morris is a resident of Lumber-
ton and earned his law degree
from Rutgers University School of
Law, a Master of Public Adminis-
tration degree from Rutgers Grad-
uate School of Policy and Public
Administration and a bachelors
degree in Political Science from
the Rutgers.
He is admitted to practice law
in New Jersey and Pennsylvania
and the associated federal courts.

The Lenape Regional High
School District Board of Educa-
tion approved a three-year em-
ployment contract at last weeks
meeting with the Lenape District
Support Staff Association, which
represents district bus drivers
and custodial staff, according to a
LRHSD release.
The LDSSA ratified the con-
tract on July 10, following negotia-
tions with the LRHSD BOE.
According to the release, the
three-year contract includes an
average salary increase of 2.3 per-
cent and was updated to be in
compliance with current statutes
governing public employee contri-
butions to health insurance.
"This contract is good for the
district and our employees," said
LRHSD board member John Heit-
mann Jr., who chairs the negotia-
tions committee.
"We reached agreement in a
timely manner, which helped
keep morale high for everyone in-
volved. The board and LDSSA
share a commitment to maintain-
ing the quality of our schools and
the safety and security of our stu-
dents."
"We hammered out an agree-
ment in a remarkably short time,
and our members had no com-
plaints when we ratified the con-
tract," LDSSA President Victoria
DeSantis said. "We're members of
the community and take pride in
our jobs. We also recognize the
economic needs of the district,
and we were willing to work with-
in their budget to reach an agree-
ment."
In other news:
The state Department of Edu-
cation Office of Fiscal Accounta-
bility and Finance audited the dis-
trict, reviewing binders on record,
according to Chris Heilig, the dis-
tricts assessment, accountability
and planning coordinator.
The audit did not uncover any
fiscal problems, and the district
will not have to return any funds
provided through grants.
However, 16 procedural find-
ings were reported, according to
Heilig.
A couple examples include not
properly documenting how we did
business with vendors, Heilig
said.
We need to issue purchase or-
ders before services, just as an ex-
ample of what they found.
The districts next step is to ap-
peal or create a corrective action
plan.
The corrective action plan is
an easy solution for us, Heilig
said. Since there were no mone-
tary findings, we dont need to ap-
peal.
According to superintendent
Carol Birnbohm, some of the pro-
cedures were already corrected at
the end-of-the-year evaluations in
the spring.
Board members will review the
report to discuss additional cor-
rective action.
The board will vote and certify
there was a discussion at the next
meeting.
The next meeting will be held
Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the adminis-
trative building, located at 93 Wil-
low Grove Road in Shamong.

Council considers banning
smoking in parks and playgrounds

that happening and work with
homeowners.
According to Wagner, the only
way to get the necessary money
was by creating the Hazard Miti-
gation Planning Process.
We have a lot of experience,
and were good at our FEMA pa-
perwork, but we need to cover all
the possibilities, Wagner said.
Council continued discussion
on tax abatement options for
business owners.
The abatement program is in
the works to help rebuild Main
Street and other business dis-
tricts in the township.
Council is working on the cri-
teria to be met, including increas-
ing tax payment by 20 percent
over five years, the types of
abatement programs business
owners qualify for and launching
the program.
An ordinance regulating
smoking in and upon public
buildings and properties was
considered on first reading.
Council has been considering
the idea to ban smoking in parks
and playgrounds, much like sur-
rounding towns Evesham Town-
ship and Cherry Hill Township,
both of which passed smoking
bans.
The Beau Rivage liquor li-
cense has been reverted to the
township.
Council discussed putting the
license to bid, but were unable to
come to an agreement on the
minimum bid, pending further
research on the cost of area li-
cense.
The next township council
meeting is scheduled for Aug. 6 at
7:30 p.m. at the Public Safety
Building, 91 Union St.

T
he Internet is quite a powerful
tool, but, sometimes its power
can be used for bad instead of
good. Information as harmless as
facts, someones opinion or pictures of
people having fun can turn harmful in
a second.
Inappropriate comments on a photo;
attacking someones character, race,
religion or sexuality; cyber-bullying;
or straight mis-reporting facts all take
advantage of the Internets power to
do bad.
Social media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram make it easier
to connect people all over the world,
and even easier to do so in a negative
fashion.
But, luckily, there is some good
going on in the digital world.
The state recently released its Uni-
form Crime Reporting rates, and local
police departments have attributed
significant drops in crime to the their
utilization of social media.
In Evesham Township, for example,
crime dropped 21.7 percent. In
Moorestown, crime dropped 36.9 per-
cent. Officials from both departments
say their presence on Facebook and
Twitter has helped tremendously.
Both of those departments use the
social media sites, as well as informa-
tion sharing service Nixle, to not only
notify residents of crimes, alerts and
issues, but also as communication
tools for residents to submit their own
issues and concerns directly to the de-
partment.
Theyve found that its much easier,
and more efficient, for residents to
submit information on the computer
than it is to call in or stop by their of-
fices.
Its great to see that police depart-
ments at a local level are utilizing the
latest technology to make their jobs
easier and more efficient, and provid-
ing more avenues for residents to feel
safe and communicate with their local
police force.
Evesham and Moorestown arent
the only towns with police depart-
ments doing this; they are just exam-
ples.
To those departments that are doing
the same, bravo; keep it up. To those
that arent, its time to step up and go
out on a limb. Its worth it.

Pine Barrens Festival celebrates 25 years
The Pine Barrens Festival celebrates 25
years all this week at The Church of the
Holy Eucharist.
More than 30,000 visitors attended the
event last year to enjoy the family friendly
atmosphere, while supporting a good
cause.
The money goes directly to the parish
and its upkeep for the year its a major
fundraiser for the church, said Father An-
drew Jamieson of Church of the Holy Eu-
charist.
The festival takes place on the churchs
property and dedicates each night of the
festival to different Pineland towns in the
area with honoring a Volunteer of the Year
from the unique towns.
Entertainment for all ages will be pro-
vided with rides and games for kids, and
homemade food will be available for sale
from local vendors and parish members.
There is also a beer garden for those of age
to enjoy. A super 50/50 raffle will be held
again as last years winner won more than
$17,000.
More than 450 volunteers donate their
time to the event both within and outside
the parish.
There will be live music performances
each night with the schedule as follows:
Wednesday July 24, Mid Life Crisis
Band; Thursday July 25, Denny O Trio
and DJ Steve Hoffman; Friday July 26,
Tequila Rose; Saturday July 27, Trump
Boyz and the radio station WXTU will be
in attendance.
The Church of the Holy Eucharist, locat-
ed at 520 Medford Lakes Road in Taberna-
cle, hosts the event. The festival runs from
6 through 11 p.m. each night with games
and rides opening at 6:30 p.m. Parking is

Feline Frenzy adoption
program until July 27
The Burlington County Free-
holders announced that there
will be a Feline Frenzy adop-
tion program at the Burlington
County Animal Shelter until
July 27. During this promotion,
adoption fees for cats over 6
months old will only be $10 in-
stead of $45. Friends of Burling-
ton County Animal Shelter will
be sponsoring the event and sub-
sidizing the rest of the cost.
The county animal shelter is
located on Pioneer Boulevard off
Woodlane Road in Westampton
and has many kittens and cats
that will be available for adop-
tion at the reduced fee.
"Whether you're looking for a
fun, frisky kitten or a mellow,
mature cat, you'll find the perfect
feline at the shelter," said
Burlington County Freeholder
Joanne Schwartz. "We encourage
people to visit and meet all the
great cats we have at the shelter.

Farmhouse turns into
center for education
During the past several weeks,
volunteers of all ages have been
working quietly and diligently to
transform the 1923 Bunning
Farm House at 211 Church Road
into the Medford Historical Soci-
ety Center for Education.
In June, the Medford Histori-
cal Society entered into a use
agreement with the state Divi-
sion of Environmental Protec-
tion for the educational use of
the former Dr. James Still med-
ical office, at 209 Church Road
and the Bunning Farm at 211
Church Road. The focus of the
MHS Center for Education will
be on sharing and preserving the
stories of those individuals who
are part of Medford Townships
history, from its more well-
known residents, such as Dr.
James Still, to the farmers, shop-
keepers, mill operators, glass
makers, teachers and artisans of
all types who shaped the town-
ships history.
The Center for Education will
open its doors this fall with a full
schedule of programs for stu-
dents of all ages.
Likewise, the creation of the
Center for Education is told in
the stories of the volunteers: two
Eagle Scout candidates, Matt
Williamson and Josh Walton,
who are completing their proj-
ects at the farmhouse, the
homers, retired men known for
their work at Cedar Wildlife
Refuge and Medford Works, Fel-
lowship Alliance Chapel paint
volunteers, Lenape Honor Socie-
ty students, Historical Society
volunteers, Ray Morgan, Ryan
Artman and Bill Stauts,
Womans Club members and so
many others.
Donations of funds and goods
to support the work have come in
from ShopRite of Medford, Med-
ford Leas, who provided cabinets
and appliances gladly repur-
posed in the center, countertops
from Intelco, and curtains by
Marnie Lyerly.
Members of the Pineland Gar-
den Club will replant wild irises
found on the property along the
front of the fence.

blood drive July 27
The need for blood is constant.
This is especially true during
summer months when regular

The following are on file with
the Medford Township Police De-
partment:
On Wednesday, July 3 at 11:03
p.m., Medford Township Police
responded to a home on Teak
Court for a report of a burglary
and theft.
The police investigation re-
vealed that unknown suspect(s)
entered the home between the
hours of 11:30 a.m. and 11 p.m.
No one was home at the time of
the burglary. Items stolen includ-
ed miscellaneous property and
jewelry.

asked to contact Medford Town-

On July 11 at 4:02 a.m., Med-
ford Township Police responded
to an alarm at the Lukoil gas sta-
tion located on Route 70.
Upon arrival, police indicated
the front glass door was shat-
tered.
Unknown suspects entered the
business and stole two cash regis-
ter drawers containing change.
The incident is under investi-
gation by township detectives.

of the incident with information

Recently, the Medford Town-
ship Police Department has re-
sponded to numerous reports of
criminal mischief in the south
portion of the township.
The criminal mischief com-
plaints include destroyed mail-
boxes and spray painted property.
The majority of the incidents
have occurred in the Tamarac
and Highbridge neighborhoods,
however, there have been inci-
dents in other parts of the town-
ship, as well.
The police department is urg-
ing residents to be observant and
to report all suspicious people
and activity.

ment and observed a vehicle
parked at the Tamarac
BeachKnotty Oak entrance.
The vehicle was occupied with
the lights on.
Detectives checked the vehicle
and observed the driver packag-
ing suspected marijuana for sale.
He was arrested and identified
as a 24-year-old male of Black-
wood.
The suspect was charged with
manufacturing, dispensing and
distributing, possession of mari-
juana (more than 50 grams) and
possession of drug parapherna-
lia.
Judge Peter Lange ordered bail
set at $31,000 full cash.
The suspect was lodged at the
Burlington County Jail and
awaits a future court hearing.
On July 14 at 7:21 p.m., the
Medford Township Police were
dispatched to Church Road at
County Road 541 for a report of a
motor vehicle accident.
The investigation revealed that
driver one was traveling east on
Church Road at which time she
ran a red light and struck a vehi-
cle driven by driver two, who was
traveling south on County Road
541.
Driver two was treated and
transported by Medford EMS to
Virtua Marlton for a complaint of
chest pain.
Driver one was issued a sum-
mons for failing to observe a traf-
fic signal.
