Summer 2013
AlbanySurrounded by a number of communities with amateur baseball teams, Albany has none. But at one time the community was a capital city of sorts for area amateur teams. Almost every year from 1926 until 1963, Albany fielded an amateur team. Most of those years they played with the Great Soo League (GSL). The league became legendary for its quality of play, and the Skeeters, as the Albany team was known, often contended with the best teams in the area. They sent a team to the state tournament in 1928. And its athletic field is remembered for its quality and crowds it drew. The grandstand held 250 to 300 people and there were people in the bleachers and along the fence, said Elmer Kohorst, who played with the Skeeters from 1950 to 53. Albanys diamond was located near the current Fleet Store. While baseball had been played in the area for a number of years, Albany became one of the initial teams in the Great Soo League in 1926. Other teams were Eden Valley, Holdingford, Paynesville, St. Anthony (of St. Cloud), St. Joseph, Waite Park and Watkins. The new league wanted towns to have hometown pride. The idea of the clubs in the Great Soo League will be to get away from any mark of professionalism the president (of the league) said It is for that reason that the team play at home gets all gate receipts and no players will be paid, in a story that ran in the Albany Enterprise when the league started. There was also a $25 fee for forfeiting a game. Some saw those as more guides than rules, and before the season was over the league ruled that Eden Valley had violated the rules regarding eligible players and had to forfeit a game. As a result, Albany qualified for the playoffs.

Skeeters. The Ebnets fielded ball players on different teams. In 1948, an allEbnet team defeated St. Martin 5-4 at Albany. There were members of three different teams playing with the Ebnet unit. That event is commemorated on the railroad car at the Lake Wobegon park in Holdingford. The 1932 Albany team was among the best, finishing 13-1 in the GSL and 16-7 overall. By that time the GSL was gaining a reputation of its level of play, and teams wanted to join. In 1934, the league expanded and added Melrose and Cold Spring to its membership. By taking Cold Spring and Melrose into the franchise, the league has accepted two of the best baseball towns that could be added, one article from the 1934 Enterprise pointed out. Even with those additions, Albany held its own and again claimed the championship. The team continued in the Great Soo until 1940, then sat out from 19411946. When it rejoined in 1946, the make-up was a bit different. Membership was composed of Albany, Avon, Cold Spring, Farming, Holdingford, St. Joseph, Richmond and Rockville. Except for two seasons, 1953-54, Albany would stay with the GSL until 1963, winning two championships. In the 1950s, Albanys field gained reputation for its quality and because night games could be played there. Batters looked to the southwest when facing a pitcher. The distances for a home run were challenging, but not out of reach. It was about 320 on corners, then veered out, said Kohorst. It was about 350 in center. It wasnt that big but for amateur it was perfect. With its covered grandstand, the diamond was considered a gem among parks through the 30s and 40s. Fuchs noted that backers of baseball also understood the patrons of the game. My husband ran the concessions, she said. We served pop, peanuts, candy and beer. As today, people wanted cold refreshments and hot hot dogs. It The 1930 team won Albanys third GSL title and the second of four consecutive titles. Those families played ball, pointed out Rose Fuchs of Albany. Fuchs attended many of the Albany games as she worked the concession stand. Others names showed up regularly, such as Ray Lehner, who hit in the high .300s, and F. Young, another .400 hitter and a Wellenstein, a high .300 hitter. Lehner is a player Kohorst never really forgot. He could hit a ball nine miles, said Kohorst. Harvey Koglin, the only surviving player of the early Great Soo Leagues, was a fleet-footed, top-of-the-order batter. But one family name stands out from all others in the memories of both Kohorst and Fuchs. That name is Ebnet, usually associated with Holdingford. Lefty Ebnet was tough, said Kohorst. When you played against him you earned your hits. His abilities as a pitcher were so respected that one headline, from 1932, reads Albany takes 15 hits off Left Ebnet. Skeeter Ebnet left such an impression with Albany fans that in 1950 Albany called itself the
The season went long then. The Albany team defeated St. Anthony at Richmond in the third game of the championship series in October of 1929. In the next nine years, Albany would claim the GSL championship six times. Those trophies were proudly displayed at the bank in Albany. Back then you played baseball, said Kohorst. There wasnt anything else. Kohorst, like many of his era, had his initial baseball training in back yards. Before he finished playing, he would earn AllAmerican honors at Notre Dame and played in the Dodgers minor leagues. In 1955, Albany honored him with an Elmer Kohorst night. I was playing in Joe Overmans backyard and Tony Botz recruited me, said Kohost. He asked me to catch and I said ok. Kohorst was 13 or 14 at the time, and the next Sunday found himself playing for Freeport against New Munich and catching Marv Stearns. That was in the 1940s, and by then Albany was an established power in the Great Soo League. It built its team around a number of familiar baseball names. There were Blenkers, Jess, Netts and Baggenstosses, recalled Kohost.
We first heated hot dogs on a little campfire, she said. The beer we cooled with ice. That took a bit of logistics and travel to get the ice. The only place that kept big blocks was in Melrose. Getting the ice was generally not a problem. But one such trip, on a hot day, became an adventure for Fuchs. Usually there was someone there (at the ice shed), but one day there wasnt, she said. I worked the block out of the sawdust but had to get it into the trunk. She found a plank and was able to slide the ice block into the car. That slide was not exactly straight and she dented the car. As she was hurrying back to Albany, she noticed a car following her from Melrose. She then remembered she had forgotten about paying for the ice. They followed me to the ball park and I was wondering if anyone saw me take the ice (which was melting). The man came up to me and said lady I think you should know that your gas tank is, leaking. After May of 1948, however, she no longer had to worry about ice blocks, or campfires. On May 26, the park turned on the lights for its first night game. It was, according to reports, a celebration. Dr. Harvey Hockert served as master of ceremonies and thanked people for their efforts. Mayor F.H. Baumgartner welcomed the crowd and William Blenker, secretary of the athletic association, thanked the people for their support. Czar of baseball in Albany, Mike Ebnet, was greeted with a lusty cheer. Frank Young, president of the Great Soo League, recalled the days the games of the Great Soo League were played in pastures. Mayor Malachesky of St. Cloud commended the people of Albany for their beautiful park, reported the Enterprise. The night ended successfully, with Albany posting a 14-11 win over Melrose. The lead changed hands three times.

Elrosa gained a reputation of being stingy this past season. For the most part, they allowed just over three runs a game; at one point they allowed only two in three games. Part of that came from the pitching corps of Ethan Vogt, Brady Weller and
and has displayed a good arm and defensive skills, and veteran Pat Illies is at first base. The shortstopsecond base combination of Matt Middendorf and Matt Schmitz is among the better in the areas, and Kevin Kuefler has the range and arm to play third base. The outfield varies depending on who is pitching,
but Ethan Vogt, Austin Imdieke, Jon Olmscheid and James Kuefler have the speed and arms needed to be good outfielders.
The Saints have the right combination of players to advance beyond the SCLNorth playoffs, but will need to play good ball to do so.

While still a young team, the Martins showed more than once they can play in tight games and pressure situations. The team handed Lake Henry its first loss of the year, when many thought the Lakers would go unbeaten. Despite their improved play, the Martins have not always been able to field what some consider their top line-up. Never-the-less some young players have continued to improve and the Martins have almost always been competitive. Jaylyn Arceneau has developed into a dependable starting pitcher and Scott Schlangen keeps his pitches around the strike zone. Speed has become a feature of the Martins offensively and defensively. Kyle Lieser is one of the best all-around young players with the speed to take extra bases, or get balls hit in the holes at shortstop. Bryan Schlangen combines speed with power to get extra-base hits. Scott Schlangen hits to all parts of the field and Nathan Schlangen has the speed for doubles and power for home runs. Defensively, the Martins have made few mistakes in their games. Playing alongside Lieser at the keystone position is Matthew Schlangen who has a good glove and good arm. Michael Schlangen can also fill in at
shortstop. Jordan Moschos plays first base well and ha the glove work to handle the tough throws. Scott Schlangen is quick enough to handle the third base corner, and has the arm throw out batters from that position. In the outfield Austin Arceneau is one of the best young centerfielders. His play is complimented by Josh Olmscheid and Chas Hennen. The Martins are improved from last year and may be still building for the future, but the future might arrive this year in post-season Jaylyn Arceneau has emerged as the Martins ace. He was the first pitcher to top Lake Henry in SCL play this year. play.
we have left it out on the field. They have showed up every week ready to play and everyone has gone hard, said manager Tim Hopfer. The Cubs struggled to find consistency on the mound but there were bright spots. Nick Rademacher showed he can start and go deep into games, or be a relief pitcher. Left-hander Brandon Worms has a good splitter and struck out batters with it. Peter Lucken saw a bit more action this year and mixes his

Clearly the best team in the Stearns County League regular season was Lake Henry. The pitching staff was among the most effective in the league. Josh Roelikes durability helped him go deep into games and his ability to spot pitches means he rarely gives up consecutive hits. Nathan Nietfeld has an above-average fastball, and combines that with two
to steal and get into scoring position. Corey Nietfield continues to be a reliable bat in the Lakers line-up. He combines good power with a good average and good speed; so too does Shane Kampsen. Nathan Nietfeld, now playing regularly, is a line drive hitter who generally puts the ball into play and Josh Kampsen usually finds a way to deliver in the clutch.

Defensively, the team has a strong outfield with Ben Rausch, Scott Ruegemer and Dusty Adams; and dependable infield with
Adam Backes, Brent Ruegemer, Kyle Budde and Corey Niewind. That unit committed only 11 errors in the first 11 games.

them a defined threat to score anytime they reach base. The pitching staff has had some excellent moments this year. Newcomer Ben Bruggeman held Nisswa to three hits and in 12 innings for relief Josh Vorpahl has not given up a run going into the post-season. Veteran Nate Winter has two wins to his credit and Pete Burg struck out 26 in his first 26 innings pitches. While they finished in the middle of the pack of the VL-North, the Black Sox are not a team anyone should overlook. They could very well enjoy a good post-season run this year.
Carter Sawyer has become a valuable member of the Black Sox potent offense and a fine outfielder.
Ben Bruggeman has added his name to the pitching tradition of the Black Sox.

Preston Loidolt (left) and Pete Herman provided solid hitting for the Pierz Bulldogs this year.
Lastrup Lakers At 10-3 the Lakers were the toast of the VL-East and qualified for Region 8C playoffs. The team won by blow out margins and some nail biters, including a 9-8 10 inning win over the Pierz Brewers. Brandon Lochner provides the team with a consistent get on batter. He is backed up by Rick Schlieman, Nathan Janson and Reggie Litke. Chad Weiss and Jason Sadlovsky both have a knack of hitting with men on base. Scott Jason, who earned four wins this year, and Chad Weiss are the workhorses of the pitching staff. Led by those two, the Laker pitchers combined to allow only 27 runs in 76 innings. Pierz Brewers The Brewers, while finishing 5-8 in the VL-West are a team few overlook. The hitting of Logan Meyer, Jerron Boser, Eric Boser, Micheal Weber and Greg Pohlkamp can put runs on the scoreboard. Pitcher Mike Poser showed his durability this year by pitching 18 in one game. He and Meyer did most of the pitching winning five games between them. Pierz Bulldogs The Bulldogs often found they were finishing with the lower score this year, but they always found a way to keep playing the game. Generally they would play with teams until the late innings, and then one bad inning would take them out of the game. Pete and Paul Herman and Preston Loidolt did most of the pitching. Pete Herman, who has good control, combined a fastball with a knuckle curve to keep batters off stride. Loidolt often worked ahead in the count and Paul Herman places pitches well and often has batters guessing which pitch and where he will throw it. The defense is anchored by catcher Jon Hansen, who has good arm, and first baseman Ben Watercott, whose fielding ability to scoop low throws makes him a favorite with other infielders. Loidolt is a solid shortstop that makes the unexpected play while Paul Herman has good range
at second base. Third baseman Zach Watercott rarely missed throws to first and outfielders Craig Luberts, Mike Anderson and Jeff Riley all have good arms and play a steady all-around game.

With an ability to pitch and play defense, the Skis were able overcome not consistently hitting with runners in scoring position. While that shortcoming puts a little more pressure on the pitching staff, the Skis pitchers rose to the challenge. Tyler Jendro has worked very hard to improve his game, and the results show that. Hes given quality starts every outing and is still a dominating pitcher. He struck out 55 in his first 43.2 innings. Beau Hanowski also threw well putting in 26 innings.
Offensively the team made a few changes during the year as they sought to increase run production. Jendro and Hanowski helped their own causes with 23 hits across 15 games and Riley Hirsch added 18 more. Jon Czech drove in 13 runs with his 19 hits. The team uses speed to take the extra base, but also had 10 home runs last year. The Skis defended their regular season championship in the VL-West and could do well in the Region 8C tournament.

The Steve won the highly contested VL-South regular season championship using good pitching and defense to hold opponents in check. The team ERA of 2.82 is a testament to how few runs the team allowed. The workhorse of that pitching staff is John Schumer who had a 2.65 era Blake Guggenberger led the team with three wins and a 1.80 era as he developed into a top pitcher. Nick Krippners relief appearances as well as some strong starts, earned him a reputation as a dependable pitcher. The pitching staff is backed up by a defense that includes: Ben Omann at catcher, Brandon Waldvogel at first, Jeremy Celusta at second, Blake Guggenberger at short and Austin Guggenberger at third. The outfield is patrolled by Adam Tschumperlin, Travis Phelps, and Cody Wolhart.

Long Prairie Predators The Long Prairie Predators finished 4-9 in the leagues regular season this year. Playing a team composed entirely of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle graduates the club is young, but improving. Offensively, Duane Mueller, Zack Miller and Codi Paszek earned the respect of opponents. Duane Miller in defending up the middle . At third base Mitchell Hinnenkamp and Jack Mechels, both still in high school, alternation holding down the hot corner. Speed is a trademark of the outfield. Kyle Middendorf, Ted Gray have experience and Alex Lemke, a sophomore in high school, has shown potential. Lemke has also shown some power with the bat. Pitching duties have been shared by primarily Ted Grey, whose control and experience helps to get batters out, Sean Colton, who is effective with off speed pitches and Duane Miller who has the velocity to the ball past batters. Swanville Swans Swanville earned a 5-1 win taking its final game in the regular season. The Swans finished 1-12, the Resorters East, the new team, learned to compete in that circuit. Ashby As Ashby struggled in Resorters West this year. The season started promising with wins over Long Prairie and Clarissa and a 10-0 shut over Swanville, but other games proved tougher. The As were outscored 82-62 in their first 12 games, but in only two of them did they give up 10 or more runs. They also had three one run losses. Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs A solid offense and good defense established the Bluedogs as the top team in the Resorters West this year. Led by Ryan Hendrickson, Monte Hinzmann, Chris Shea and Collin Modahl, Bluedogs have formidable array of hitters. The pitching of Shawn Krueger and Modahl keeps opponents in check.

St. Martin-When the St. Martin Martins put on a lateseason surge to qualify for the Stearns County League (SCL)-South playoffs, one of the key figures was infielder/ pitcher Kyle Lieser. He has been no small part of the improved play by the Martins this year. That is not completely unexpected. His family has a tradition of playing at St. Martin. His dad, Carl, has managed for a number of years and Kyle, like his dad, came through the Little League and Legion program before playing for the Martins. Kyle is aware of that tradition and noted that many SCL players share that experience. His was still a bit different. That tradition, I think that goes for every player. In fact, my first year of amateur I was on all three teams. But its definitely pretty cool to play all the way up the system, said Kyle. Lieser has been in a Martins uniform since he was an
eighth grader, his last year of Little League. He played with a Big Dipper Legion championship team. He saw and played with the amateur team when it dominated the SCLSouth and regularly qualified for regions. Last year, however, the Martins were in a rebuilding year and they struggled to find wins. The team soon learned it had lessons to learn about the game. I think we learned that even though we were young, we were right there at the end of the year. We just lacked experience, he said. When things didnt go our way, we sort of fell apart. Hopefully we can learn from that and continue to compete. By the end of year, the team appeared to have learned those lessons. Its pitching stabilized and the offense showed confidence in its abilities. Jake Harrison threw two awesome games at the end of the year and we started to hit the ball around, said Lieser. The whole year we had problems with striking out, and we finally put the ball in
Kyle Lieser plays for St. Cloud State University in the spring, was a star at Albany High School, and has been playing for the St. Martin Martins since hew was in eighth grade.
play and put some pressure on the defense. This year they have continued to improve in those problems. The team has
played even with most of its opponents, Jaylyn Arceneau has come around as pitcher and the team is hitting better. Still, a big part of the im-
provement is Kyle Lieser. He is hitting .333 and defensively he is a strong shortstop. I like shortstop just because you are in charge of the whole field. Its what Ive been playing my whole childhood. But I really do enjoy pitching. Thats one thing I wish I was a lot better at. He did pitch 23 innings last year, recording 20 strikeouts and a 1-1 record. One of his favorite memories of last year involved him pitching. We beat Roscoe in 10 innings to force a playoff game with them to make the postseason. I threw all 10 innings and Ken Arceneau lifted us with a homerun in the top of the 10th. Hes also played a few other positions, as does one of the players he looks up to. Growing up, the St. Martin Martins had some pretty outstanding players that I always-and still do-look up to, he said. But besides them Id have to say one guy from the league that I always tried modeling my game after was Jon Lieser from Lake Henry.
He plays college ball at St. Cloud State University. He believes that playing on the amateur and college level helps create a better ball player. Playing with a lot of really high-caliber players has really helped me to work harder and to strive to get better, he said. In college you have a lot more time and practice to work on some things that you normally wouldnt do in amateur ball. The atmosphere of the whole league has helped me with staying calm. Ive played in front of some pretty huge crowds in playoffs and in regions. Lieser is hoping to help the Martins to again be playing at that level. His favorite memories ever from his career with St. Martin was not against the SCL team. We beat Lamberton in 13 innings at State. We won on a suicide squeeze by Luke Rothstein and it was one moment I wont ever forget, he said. Hed like to help his teammates have similar moments.
