    The Scientific Method and Big Bang Example

    Our world continues to become ever more technical and dependent on science. Our politicians have to make daily decisions related to science (climate change, energy, stem cells, ...) . Very few politicians understand the "scientific method", which means overwhelming majority of scientists (>99%) debate and scratch and claw with each other to learn the truth about nature, no matter what the answer turns out to be. Comparing reproducible data to models is key. The Big Bang is a great example. Some believe the universe and earth is only as old as recorded history (<10000 yrs) while science says otherwise.

    Georgia Congressman Paul Broun, on the House of Representatives Science Committee calls Big Bang Theory "... lies straight from the Pit of Hell." Google "Paul Broun video" to see it.

    Florida Senator Marco Rubio, on the Senate Science Committee, next Republican candidate for president(?), asked "How old do you think the Earth is?" Answer: "I'm not a scientist, Man! I can tell you what recorded history said, I can tell you what the Bible said, but I think that's a dispute among theologians." Google "Marco Rubio age of earth" to see it.

    The DATA supporting the Big Bang and a Universe that is >13 billion years old is ROCK SOLID. (next few slides) On the other hand we have NO DATA on what happened before the Big Bang, only complete guesses.

    Evidence for the Big Bang -- 3 key pieces

    Everything is expanding away from everything else, you can simply run the clock backwards. Cosmic Microwave background Light elements

    Big Bang Evidence #1: Universe is expanding. Everything is moving away from us like raisins in raisin bread while it is baking.

    Supernova distances and velocities are plotted: (none are negative meaning NONE are moving toward us!)

    (NOTE: Nearest galaxy Andromeda about 30 Million Trillion Kilometers away)

    Time since Big Bang:


    RUN THE CLOCK BACKWARDS WHEN EVERYTHING IS ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE... Time = Distance/Velocity Time = (4.5 Billion Trillion Kilometers) / (10000 Km/sec) Time about 14.3 Billion years (including effects of Dark Matter and Dark Energy gives slightly different best answer: 13.7 Billion years) This expansion was first noticed in 1930s, in the 1950s it was PREDICTED that the light leftover from BIG BANG (Cosmic Microwave Radiation) should be seen. In the 1960s it was observed.

    One more crucial prediction to go before Big Bang is accepted by scientists: The Fraction of light elements like Helium

    CMB over time


    Light travelled for 13.4 billion years It travelled a distance of 46 billion light years (4.3 x 10^26 meters). However, at emission this region only occupied roughly 46 million light years ~46 billion /46 million = 1000, the universe is 1000 times bigger now!

    Thick lines are prediction of Big Bang, circles are measurements. Awesome agreement!! No responsible scientist can deny such compelling measurements.
