Our approach
The scope of classification includes certification of safety critical materials, components and systems intended for the unit. The rules define the extent of the certification that is needed for classification. The objective of product certification is to verify that a finished product conforms with specified requirements at the time of certification. The product certification process will vary according to the type of product involved and the manufacturing techniques available to the producer. Other factors include the specific needs of the purchaser and legislative requirements in the jurisdiction where the unit will operate. The manufacturer will normally be given a choice of procedures for the certification process depending on a range of characteristics: the type of products, the nature of the risks involved when the products are used, the production process applied, the qualification of the manufacturer with regard to certified quality system, personnel, among others. The main procedure for product certification has 5 steps:

Planning of project in co-operation with vendor Assessment of qualification of firms and personnel Assessment of design quality

Assessment of manufactured quality Completion of certification project issuing product certificate.

At each step, various certification services may be applied to support the certification bodys assessment of the products conformity with requirements. The manufacturer will normally have to document his qualifications, by procuring certificates testifying to certain skills in the overall organisation, or in an individual employee. All of these certificates do not need to be issued by DNV in order to be found acceptable in the product certification process. The certification is a conformity assessment that normally includes both design and production assessment. The production assessment includes inspection and testing during production and/or of the final product. Certification of materials and components is usually covered by separate agreements between each vendor and the local DNV office.
