Information Technology Sector Market Overview


Clients are nding the Talent Mismatch problem growing in Hong Kong. Based on conversations with Hiring Managers, the right talent is harder to hire immediately as we get nearer to the end of 2012. Most candidates are waiting for their year-end bonus after a really hard year. Some are due to the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) factor that is prevalent every time we look at reports of the global economy on the web, mobile or printed publications. Being near the source, our technology recruiters see a somewhat different picture of Hong Kongs hiring demand. Hiring Managers are aware of the need to get people into their teams to increase sales, increase billable stafng resources or increase production / services to existing projects. There are more clients who have been looking for the right talent. What we at EXPERIS do is to look beyond the Job Specs and fully understand the clients ROI for this role and short-term expectations of having this person on board. What are the short term business objectives? What are key skills that will win more deals ? What skills are needed to retain the client that is impatient? Once we clarify the business-IT alignment reason for this job opening, we will map the potentially effective leadership types who will excel in this work environment. Next we use our personal networks and change the game by looking for passive candidates. We nd that we get more qualied candidates in this manner (besides direct headhunting) than other methods. In-demand roles include telecom specialists (OSS/BSS/ etc), team leaders in Mobile computing, Cloud Computing Sales or technical skills in hybrid clouds, private clouds and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), etc . Gartner predicts that worldwide spending for IT outsourcing (ITO) services is on pace to reach $251.7 billion in 2012, a 2.1 percent increase from 2011 spending of $246.6 billion in an August 2012 report. The highest growth is in cloud compute services, which is part of the cloud-based infrastructure as a service (IaaS) segment. Cloud compute services are expected to grow 48.7 percent in 2012 to $5.0 billion, up from $3.4 billion in 2011. Little wonder that there are more cloud computing vendors active in Hong Kong, where one group competes on price and the other competes on value. We foresee a lack of value-selling sales and presales professionals with trilingual skills (English, Mandarin and Cantonese) to engage the leads generated across Asia. The key areas getting outsourced (Annuity-managed Services) are helpdesk, security, infrastructure, cloud storage, customer data management, data centers, IT service desk and other skills. Certications such as ITIL, PMP, CISA and CISSP are advantageous for technical pros within this sector. Clients continue to be cautious in hiring the right person for their teams culture (be it to conform to the existing team or to be a change agent).
