Mulberry River access points part of Forest Service proposal

Ozark-St. Francis National Forest managers have introduced a proposal that would improve access and reduce impacts along the popular Mulberry River in Franklin County. The Mulberry River was designated as a Wild and Scenic River in 1992 to ensure its free flowing condition and remarkable characteristics were protected. Since designation, recreation use along the river has grown steadily. According to forest managers, the increase in use has resulted in some problems along certain areas of the river corridor. Weve seen a tremendous increase in unauthorized roads, trails, and parking areas created by river users over the years, said District Ranger William Dunk. These unmanaged features can be unsafe and have led to resource damage such as erosion and sedimentation which can cause degradation in water quality and wildlife and fisheries habitat. Dunk said the Forest Service has been working over the last three years to develop a set of actions that would manage access to the Mulberry River in a manner that would allow the public to continue to safely enjoy the river, and simultaneously protect the resource. The Mulberry River draws people for a lot of reasons; fishing, canoeing, and scenic beauty, he said. By providing safe and suitable access along the river, we can maintain and restore conditions for healthy forests and watersheds, have many different kinds of plant and animal species, and provide for a variety of recreational opportunities that result in an economic benefit to the area. The proposed actions include five potential put-in locations at Big Eddy, Jethro, Anvil, Black Gold and Wilson Lane. In some areas, parking lots, roads and access points mess. I was really snubbin and snottin then, but I was tryin to be quiet about it. Heck fire, I didnt think I was a gonna die, but Mama said shut up and I was doin my dangest to shut up. Mama and Auntie cleaned Norman up, washed his hair and it still looked awful, I mean ugly awful. Seems I used something called pinking shears and they didnt work very well. Then the razor worked too well. Norman was a mess! A flat out mess! Mama did her best to fix it, but it still looked bad. I was so sorry I couldnt stop crying. Mama felt sorry for us both and she couldnt give me the tanning I needed right then and there. But I did get it. Mama had a good memory all right. Norman got his picture taken that Wednesday. He wore his little hat and it was one of the cutest pictures ever taken of him, I thought. I was happy he got a good picture, but I couldnt hardly sit to get mine taken. My britches had been blistered. Never tried that again on Norman. Did try it on me, but thats another story. Joshua 24:15: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. 1 Chronicles 29:17: I know, my God, that you examine our hearts and rejoice when you find integrity there. You know I have done all this with good motives, and I have watched your people offer their gifts willingly and joyously.

Nothin, heck, What have you done, Clydene? She was scared because there was blood on Normans shoulder. I saw it and I got scared. Norman was trying to run and get away from his crazy sister, but Brenda was standing in the door. She saw the blood and I mean to tell you she lit out like fire was on her backside. Gone in a flash. Mama caught Norman and started examining him. There was a lot of blood and it was all mixed with lotion and it was not a pretty sight. I started bellerin then. Shut up, Clydene, and go get me a wet wash rag. Yep, we called them wash rags. I hurried to the kitchen and grabbed a dish rag, yep we called em dish rags, and wet it in the wash pan. Back I ran and Mama very gently washed off where the blood was comin from. It was just a knick, but I was still bellerin. Is he gonna die, Mama, is he? No, Clydene, hes not gonna die, but you just might. Huh? Am I cut too? I started examining myself then, still bellerin. Shut up, Clydene, right this minute. Neither of you are gonna die. Boy, howdy was I happy to hear that. Brenda and my auntie came running in and Brenda was bellerin and Auntie was scared. Brenda said Clydene cut Normans ear off, Auntie said , to which I really bellered. Probably heard me in the next town. At least thats what Mama said later. No, his ear is just nicked, but look what she done to his hair. Oh, my goodness gracious, what a mess, what a

would be improved, and user created roads or trails would be eliminated. Vault style restrooms are proposed to be located near each access point if funding is available. As part of the overall Mulberry River Watershed Improvement project, the Turner Bend Fields (Turner Bend Small Game Area) would be treated to restore native grasses and eradicate serecia lespedeza, fescue and Bermuda grass. Additional work in the game area could include establishing an orchard of white oaks and hickories for seed sources for wildlife. Mobility impaired hunting

blinds would be placed in the area during large game season. The public will have an opportunity to learn more about the Mulberry River Watershed Improvement and Access Project preliminary proposal at a meeting slated for early August. Hair Cut Disaster

by Clydene Overbey I do believe the worst trouble Brenda and I ever got into was when we cut my brothers hair. Yep! That would be the worst. I heard my Mama say to my daddy one day, Clyde, Norman needs a haircut bad before school pictures are taken. Well, Lucille, I cant take him until Saturday. I dont get paid until Friday night. Okay, but they are taking the pictures Wednesday. I guess Ill try to trim it up a little bit. Well, shoot fire, I thought, I can cut Normans hair better than Mama can. Ill just surprise her. Brenda was at my house that night, so I recruited her to help me. Norman was only five and not in school, but Mama always took him on the day they were taking school pictures and they would take his also. We were in the back room playing and Norman was with us. I had watched the barber cut Normans hair and I knew how to do it. Yep! Nope! I got a big pair of scissors out of Grandmas quilting box and got Daddys razor off the dresser. Brenda got a towel and a comb and we were set. Sure nuff! Norman wasnt very cooperative or happy, but I talked him into it. I started with the scissors. They were big and hard for me to handle, but I was managing to remove a little bit. Trouble was it looked funny. I put the scissors down and picked up Daddys razor. Didnt have any soap like Id seen Daddy use, so I put some lotion on Normans hair. Well, shoot fire that aint working either, Brenda. Clydene, youve got too much lotion on there, wipe some off. I did just that with the towel I had around his shoulders. I switched back and forth for a while between the scissors and razor until I nicked Normans ear and he yelped out. That brought Mama in the door and sent Brenda out the door. What is goin on in

St. Mary's Mtn.

By Lynda Evans Greetings! Donna and Ganelle Wenninghoff were here this past weekend. I wasnt to say they were coming as Donna wanted to surprise people and she did. We had a good visit. Ganelle was interested in our garden and I was able to send a plant home with her. Dinner Saturday was a crowd of about 20. Gary Wiederkehrs sister, Marsha, joined us. We dont get to see her very often. She was in for the Wiederkehr reunion on Saturday. Lots of them came to church Saturday. Aunt Gertrude and Aunt Toni had their pictures taken so they could be shared with those who could not come for the reunion. The Leding/Edelhofer reunion was also this past weekend. We didnt go, but they always have a good turnout. Gene and Janie Dahlem spearhead this event and it is very organized. Vacation Bible School starts today and St. Marys is cooking for the kids tonight. Have to make some reminder calls for the ladies that are going to help me. We will have about 80 kids there. Trivia Nite is Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. at Lawrence Hall. Tables of 10 persons or less are $100. Free popcorn and you can bring any snacks or drinks you want. We will also have pizza for sale. It is tons of fun. We have as much fun making up answers as anything. Get your table together and come out for an enjoyable evening. You dont have to be super smart because you never know what categories Dan is going to have and we all know more than we think we do. See ya there. With that wonderful rain Saturday I might have to mow this week. The grass is trying to be green and it doesnt crunch when I walk on it. Have a great week, bye.
