The Holy Spirit Within

Religious Knowledge and Deep Understanding The action of the holy spirit in the lives of the believers is described in scripture using a variety of titles and images. The key parts of the Catholic Rite of Confirmation are: calling on the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands, the anointing with the oil of chrism together with the words Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit (wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, awe and wonder and reverence) guide believers and give them strength to live a spirit-filled life. The fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control Galatians 5:22-23) are visible signs of Gods active love and work within and through believers as they live spirit-filled lives. Make connections between some titles and images of the holy spirit and action of the holy spirit in the lives of believers. Describe the key parts of the Catholic Rite of Confirmation, identifying words, symbols, actions and significance in the lives of believers. Explain the meaning of some of the gifts of the Spirit and how these guide and give strength to believers today. Explain the meaning of some of the fruits of the Spirit and how they are visible signs of Gods active love and work in the lives of believers. Understandings Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles. After Jesus rose on Easter, he appeared to the apostles over the next 40 days, teaching them the significance of what had happened to Him. They listened, but didnt really understand, so Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, who would enlighten them and give them everything they would need to carry the Good News to people all over the world.

SESSION 1 Who is the Holy Spirit? - Reflect on how people make mistakes and do wrong things and feel sorry about their decisions. - Ask the students if they have ever been afraid and needed help making tough decisions? Word of Knowledge: The Spirit gives us knowledge we wouldnt know ourselves. Word of Wisdom: Sometimes the Spirit gives us wisdom about what to do in a situation- wisdom we wouldnt have come up with ourselves. Discernment of Spirits: Helps us know whether something is from God, a persons own mind and heart, or evil spirits. Gifts of Healing: Praying for the sick and having increased faith to know God will heal. Miracles: Miracles are things that are impossible for us to do on our own. Faith: Knowing that even though we dont see Jesus, He is alive and working in our lives. God gives us the ability to trust Him when times are tough. Prophecy:This is a message God gives to encourage people for the purposes of making them stronger and giving them hope and comfort. Tongues: The Spirit gives us the ability to speak a language we havent learned and we dont know. It is a heavenly language between God and us. Interpretation of Tongues: When tongues are used in a public meeting they need to be interpreted. With this gift someone gives a sense of what was said so everyone can benefit from it.

Closing prayer Almighty and ever-living God, you fulfilled the Easter promise by sending us your Holy Spirit. May that Spirit unite the races and nations on earth to proclaim your glory. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
