16 December: A female physiotherapy student was beaten and gang raped in Delhi, when the victim and a male companion boarded a bus in South Delhi in the evening, after watching a movie. The incident created huge outrage across the country and forced the Government of India to react and work on safety for women. Public protests took place in Delhi, where thousands of protesters clashed with police, and other force units.

As the year 2012 passes by and with all the predictions and claims about this year, the year has been quite an eventful year for India. The year 2012 witnessed a lot of high's and lows, so keeping that in mind we have handpicked the major events that happened in India this year and given below a month wise account of those events. January 2012 On January 11th, The Union government informing the rules of allowing 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in single-brand retail, making way for international brands to set up stores in the country and boost sourcing from local manufacturers. February 2012 On February 2nd, Supreme Court cancels 122 licenses given by A.Raja in 2G spectrum scam, declaring it as illegal and blamed the government's flawed first-come-first-served policy. March 2012 6th March 2012 - Election results for five state assemblies were announced, the emerged winners were Samajwadi Party from Uttar Pradesh, Indian National Congress from Manipur & Uttarakhand, Bhartiya Janata Party from Goa, Shiromani Akali Dal - BJP combine from Punjab. The Indian Rail Budget 2012-13 was presented on March 14th and the Union Budget 2012-13 was presented on March 16th in the Parliament. April 2012 On April 18th, a major fire broke out in the signaling system at Kurla, Mumbai which brought the Central and Harbour line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway to a standstill. July 2012 The month of July saw the death of the legendary wrestling champion and actor, Dara Singh on 12 July and also death of celebrated veteran Bollywood actor and director, Rajesh Khanna on 18 July. On July 22nd, Pranab Mukherjee was elected as India's 13th President after an easy win against his competitor P.A. Sangma. On July 30th and 31st, the country faced a massive power crisis as three grids i.e. the Northern, Eastern and North-Eastern grids failed causing a major blackout in half of India disrupting normal life in 19 states and the union territory of India - Delhi. August 2012 On August 5th, flash floods hit the states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu causing loss of over 30 lives and triggering landslides causing damage to property worth lakhs. On August 18th, the Karnataka government arrested six people on charges of attack, intimidation or sending "false" SMSes to people from northeast which led to the mass exodus of more than 30,000 Northeast people who flee from South back to their states in Northeast. September 2012 On September 6th, a fire broke out in a fire cracker factory near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu killing at least 38 people and injuring more than 50 people. October 2012 On October 21st, the renowned Hindi film producer, director, script writer, Yash Chopra dies at the age of 80 in Mumbai. On October 31st, Cyclone Nilam hits the north Tamil Nadu coast near Mahabalipuram, and continues its destructive path with heavy rains and strong winds for the next 3 to 4 days. November 2012 On November 17th, the well-known Indian politician, founder and chief of the Shiv Sena, Bal Thackeray passed away in Mumbai as he died of a cardiac arrest. On November 21st, Ajmal Kasab was hanged in Pune's Yerwada Central Jail on account of the 2008 Mumbai Attacks. December 2012 On December 7th, the UPA government answered the opposition by winning a Rajya Sabha vote on FDI in retail by 21 votes and announced that now there are no hurdles in India's reforms process.
