You no doubt recall Jesus' word in John
in that because faith alone dies, a man is justified by works and not by faith only (2:24)it takes faith that works to stay in the family of God. Saving faith is not, therefore, merely a climatic thing .that breaks forth once in the lifetime, then and there guaranteeing a man against himself in such a manner
that no matter what he becomes or comes

as the Good Shepherd, spoke if the sheep of His Flock, when He said: "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my
Father's hand" (John 10:28, 29).
No one who believes the Lord would ever doubt that the believer is sure of his sal
nounces the Word, he has ceased to be open to the grace of God and therefore cannot share in the gift of grace. The life
will continue whether or not he chooses
to accept the gift. It is frequently said by those who believe that once one is in grace, he is always and irrevocably in grace, that if a man can lose eternal life, the life would not be eternal, but would of necessity be of time and not of eternity. The fault with this reasoning is that it is
not founded on the Word of God. The di
lemma is non-existent when we remem ber that the "eternal life" of which Jesus

either in unending torment (Matthew 25:-
46; Revelation 14:11; 20:10), or among the redeemed (1 John 2:25). Therefore, it is
the quality and not the duration of "etern
al life" which is at stake.
No one who believes the Lord thinks that the believer is insecure. But careful and
lievers the necessity of not drawing back, but in having faith unto the saving of the
soul.
Furthermore, it is Christ who is our life (Colossians 3:4). John says, "we have seen it, and bear witness and show unto
you that eternal life which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us." He goes on to say that "God hath given to us

Since Jesus was "made a surety of a better covenant" (Hebrews 7 : 22), there could be no greater security than to be found in Him. In his promise of everlast ing life, of no condemnation, of being passed from death to life, Jesus flatly
states that all tiiis is for the man who
-live without works; he says that faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone (2:7).
It is faith that distinguishes the believer from the non-believer, and if that faith dies, there is no difference between them:
the believer becomes a non-believer. Does someone say that the man of faith is not
(1 John 5:11,12). Eternal life, then, for the saved, is sharing in the very life of God. The "everlastingness" of God's life is not affected by our deliberate termination of
that union with Christ which allows us to
share it. His eternal life cannot cease, but it is in His power to withhold it from those who choose not to participate in it. As 1 John 2:25 says, "This is the promise which He promised us: even the life etern al." "The gift of God is eternal life in Jesus
which we read at the beginning. The fact is that Jesus' use of the verbs in this pas sage is very enlightening. He used a form
of the verbs "hear" and "believe" that
In fact, this is why James explains that believers either live like people of faith or they are as dead spiritually as the body is
without the spirit (1:26).

The conclusion is unavoidable: deny Christ, who is our life, and we have denied our selves the privilege of eternal life. "K we deny Him He will deny us!" (2 Timothy 2:12). "Whoever disowns the Son, the same
does not have the Father" (1 John 2:23). ; "Now the Spirit speaks expressly that
