Washington: The University of N o r t h e r n Virginia (UNV) has been ordered to shut down with immediate effect, leaving a large number of Indian students stranded and jeopardizing their academic career. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia in an order dated July 16, which was made public last week, said that the UNV, which calls itself the most popular US varsity for students from India, "must cease operations immediately" as a post-secondary institution, The Huffington Post reported. Since UNV has a significantly large number of foreign students, mostly from India, the council has asked these students with F1 visas to approach the Department of Homeland Security with issues related to immigration and optional practical training. Queen Elizabeth 'thrilled' about William and Kate's son, who is third in line to throne

Prince William and wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, with their new born son, later named George Alexander Louis, greet the media outside St Mary's hospital

London: Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have named their new son George Alexander Louis, a day after the infant prince had his debut to the world when his mother emerged with him in her arms from St. Mary's Hospital in London on July 22. Kensington Palace made the announcement Wednesday evening. The baby made his debut to the public on Tuesday, a day after his birth, when William and Kate emerged from the hospital and were greeted by throngs of media and well-wishers. On Wednesday, the royal couple was taking "private and quiet time for them to get to know their son," Buckingham Palace said, before the name announcement was made. The Queen, 87, and William's brother Prince Harry were among visitors at the Kensington Palace home of William and Kate on Wednesday morning. It marked their first get-together with the royal couple and their newborn.

The Queen made the short journey from Buckingham Palace to Kensington in a dark green Bentley. Although there was no early word on how the Queen's visit went, she was said to be "thrilled" at the baby's arrival, and described him as a "big boy." He was born at 4:24 p.m. local time (11:24 a.m. ET) Monday, July 22, weighing eight pounds, six ounces. After the Queen departed their home, William, on two week's paternity leave from his job as a Royal Air Force pilot, and Kate took the baby to visit her parents' home in the village of Bucklebury, west of London. The Daily Mail offered a photo album image with the headline "Baby's First Royal Wave." After emerging from St. Mary's Lindo Wing following her discharge Tuesday evening, Kate was wearing a baby blue, polka-dot dress, reminiscent of the seafoam green polka-dot dress worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, when she said here. "We are equally thrilled to learn about the new arrival in the British royal family. Around a hundred of us celebrated the event, distributed sweets and offered blessings to the future king," said Subhash Talekar, spokesperson of Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association. The next - and more difficult step is to send a box of 'pedhas' to Prince Charles who has now become a grandfather, said Talekar. "We plan to contact the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai and seek their advice on how to go about it. We are keen that the royal family gets a chance to taste our traditional Indian sweet on this historic occasion," he said. The 5,000 dabbawallas in Mumbai who ferry lunch boxes to

US has to give visa to Modi sooner or later: Rajnath Singh

By Ashok Ojha/SATimes Edison, NJ: BJP president Rajnath Singh urged the United States Government to grant visa to Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat, who is a frontrunner as the partys prime ministerial candidate in 2014 election. Expressing confident of his partys victory in the forthcoming parliamentary election in India, Singh said that Modi was a mobilizing force as the partys campaign chief whose leadership qualities were well known. He was speaking at a reception held by Overseas Friends of BJP at TV Asia auditorium in Edison, NJ on July 21. As a number of speakers at the event said Modi will emerge as Indias prime minister, Rajnath Singh kept smiling. It is better they (US) decide soon (to give visa to Modi), rather than deciding some day in future, he said, speaking in Hindi, alluding to the fact that US couldnt deny Modi visiting USA once he became prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1998 to 2004: India then enjoyed the highest economic growth rate of 8.4% and a low inflation rate. Congress (I) led UPA government has lacked a clear vision to lead the nation, Singh said, adding that the party has miserably failed on internal and external security as well as diplomatic fronts. None of Indias neighbors may be termed as good friends. BJP President Singh alleged that the Congress led UPA government has lost credibility as no foreign investor was willing to invest in Indias development. In contrast, Singh said that BJP had a vision to transform India into worlds economic super-power within 10 to 15 years. We understand the potential of our country and can employ it in such a way that India would not need to depend on foreign investment, he said. Singh singled out BJP led governments in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states for their growth rates of almost 10% and 24 hour power supply. The public distribution system in Chhattisgarh was the most successful in the nation, he pointed out. He, however, didnt mention the law and order situation in the state where Maoist guerillas recently attacked a convoy of Congress leaders, killing dozens of people. Ananth Kumar in his speech said the BJP motto for 2014 election is to make India a global leader and global player not just economically and in strategic matters but also spiritually and culturally. We dont need your money, he told NRIs, but your time and expertise to connect to your district/Lok Sabha constituency in India and use all means of communication to support the BJP. Vijay Jolly and Sudhanshu Prasad also spoke, praising the leadership of Rajnath Singh as a great organizer who was destined to lead the party to victory. HR Shah, chairman of TV Asia, also spoke.

New York: Talking to the press Saturday at his Waldorf Astoria hotel suite here, visiting BJP president Rajnath Singh sounded confident that his party will come to power in the next election which maybe just 6-7 months away. Congress government has failed on many fronts. There is a mood for change among the people in the country. BJP is the only party that can provide an alternative and give good governance, he said. In the last 10 years, people have had a chance to compare the Congress model of governance and the BJP model, he said, citing facts and figures to prove that the BJP model has worked better. He discounted the fact of BJP losing in Karnataka and doing poorly elsewhere. Lok Sabha elections and assembly elections are different, he argued. On the plus said, he said, the party has done a lot organizationally at the ground level, with the formation of polling booth committees everywhere. He also denied the allegation that Narendra Modis emergence on the national scene is proving a divisive factor. He reiterated that there are no differences with LK Advani over elevation of Modi as the partys election campaign chief. He said, BJP is trying to get clear majority as we contest the Lok Sabha election with our allies. In the formation of government afterwards, there will be participation of our allies also. As for allies, he could name only Shiv Sena and Shiromani Akali Dal. Ram temple, he said, was not going to be a BJP election plank. Good governance will be. On the recent killings of BJP functionaries in Tamil Nadu, he said his party will pressure the central and

BJP Presidents trip to America, informed Ananth Kumar, , accompanying him, is on two tracks: as an outreach to the Indian diaspora, to seek their support for the mood of change in India, where many of them are opinion makers. Secondly, to meet the India caucus in US Congress and impress on them the change sweeping the country. On Indo-US relations, Rajnath Singh said, America and India have been close on the global stage, as they are natural partners. With the NRIs, he said BJP has always had an emotional relationship and agreed with a journalist comment that several measures appreciated by the NRIs like voting rights and PIO card were initiated by BJP when in power in the country.

Speculation about Modi just... Continued from page 1 creation of the media, Singh suggested in an interaction with the Indian media here. "It is for the central parliamentary board of the party to project its prime ministerial candidate at a suitable time," said Rajnath Singh dressed in his trademark dhoti-kurta and Nehru jacket and speaking in Hindi with party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi translating. But denying that Modi was a polarizing figure, he said there was indeed "a consensus within the party over the leadership of the Gujarat chief minister. Had it not been so, I would not have named Modi as the party's election campaign chief". Changing tack on the visa issue, Rajnath Singh said, "This is a US administration issue, not our issue" though he did think it was a "paradox" that while the Congressional Research Service had praised the leadership of Modi, the administration continued to deny him a visa. The BJP chief said he had not taken up the visa issue in his interactions with American lawmakers or policy experts at think tanks though some of them questioned the rationale of denying Modi a visa. Some of the lawmakers that he met had also sought an investigation into a purported letter from 65 members of the Indian parliament asking President Obama to not grant a visa to Modi, he said. Many MPs, including CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury, have denied signing the letter, said to be a refax of a letter sent earlier in November 2012, and called it a forgery, Rajnath Singh pointed out. Meanwhile, commenting on the purported letter in a report from New Delhi the influential Washington Post wrote: "It is almost unthinkable that Indian lawmakers would appeal to the US to take a stand on an internal matter." "Most Indian politicians, many of whom still nurse a Cold Warera suspicion of Washington, would bristle at the very thought of it," it said. See related stories on page 3. No change in visa policy, but... Continued from page 1 don't talk about the specifics of that process or individual cases. But he would, of course, be considered if he were to apply," Psaki assured. Modi, who was denied a US visa in 2005 for his alleged role or inaction in the 2002 Godhra anti-Muslim riots, never applied again for a US visa even as corporate America of late has been warming up to his "vibrant Gujarat". Three Republican lawmakers who met Modi recently in Gandhinagar along with a US business delegation had also promised to take up the issue with the Obama administration. Asked what would happen in case Modi became Prime Minister after the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Psaki said: "Well, that's a lot of speculation down the road." Virginia varsity shuts down... US bans ayurvedic, homeo remedies for diabetes

Washington: The US Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on the sale of alternative remedies, including ayurvedic and homeopathic products and dietary supplements, for the treatment of diabetes. The agency has issued letters warning 15 companies including some that procure alternative diabetes remedies from India, that the sale of their illegally marketed diabetes products violates federal law. Foreign and domestic companies whose products claiming to mitigate, treat, cure or prevent diabetes and related complications, were sold online and in retail stores have been asked to tell FDA within 15 days how they will correct the violations. The FDA has also advised consumers not to use these or similar products because they may contain harmful ingredients or may be otherwise unsafe, or may improperly be marketed as over-the-counter products when they should be marketed as prescription products. Medications cited in the ban order included unapproved versions of metformin and Januvia, which is procured from India, and Diexi, manufactured by Amrutam LifeCare of Surat. Amrutam was also cited for claims with regards to supplements such as Zoom (for erectile dysfunction), Arexi (for arthritis), Allexi (for allergy), Cholexi (for cholesterol control), and Obexi (for obesity). The FDA acknowledged that it's not aware of any reports of injury or illness associated with the illegally sold products, but said it's taking action to protect the public health from potential harm.

Washington, DC: Ami Bera, the lone Indian-American Democrat member of US Congress, has become co-chair of a bipartisan group of lawmakers who want "to stop partisan games and gridlock in Washington." Called "No Labels Problem Solvers" the new coalition of 81 members of Congress from both Democratic and Republican parties unveiled a package of nine "common sense bills to make government work!" at an event outside the US Capitol last week. "We came together to stop partisan games and gridlock in Washington. We came together, not as Republicans and Democrats, but as Americans. We came together to put people ahead of politics and put our country first," said Ami Bera. The group, he said was meeting regularly to build trust across party lines and find common ground to move US for-

"The Make Government Work! package will achieve critical goals that both Republicans and Democrats care about and save taxpayers billions of dollars," Bera said Bera said he would be a lead sponsor on one of the bills, the 21st Century Healthcare for Heroes Act, along with Republican colleague Chris Gibson. This new bill would merge electronic health records from the Department of Defence with the Veteran Affairs to save taxpayers money, make the transition to civilian life easier for veterans, and help address the VA backlog, he said. "Congress needs to be a place for service, where we focus on fixing problems, not fighting. That means putting an end to the finger pointing and name-calling and making Congress start working for America again," Bera said. Washington, DC: On the eve of Vice President Joe Biden's visit to India, President Barack Obama has nominated Nisha Desai Biswal, an accomplished Indian-American administrator, as America's new point person for South Asia. When confirmed by the Senate, Desai will become the first person of Indian or even South Asian origin to head the South Asia bureau of the State Department, which oversees US foreign policy and relations with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. Designated as the assistant secretary of state for south and central Asian affairs, she will succeed Robert Blake, a former deputy chief of mission in New Delhi, who is expected to be nominated shortly as the new US ambassador to Indonesia. In nominating Biswal and seven other individuals to the departments of state, energy, and defence, Obama said: "It gives me great confidence that such dedicated and capable individuals have agreed to join this administration to serve the American people. I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come." A Sikh American soldier's battle for the turban

But Kalsi's commanders agreed to put in a request for a waiver up the chain of command. "They afforded me a very amicable process, though a very lengthy one with a large amount of paperwork." He finally won an accommodation from the Pentagon in 2010, went on active duty at Fort Bragg and was deployed twice in Afghanistan, where he went on to win a Bronze star for service and a NATO commendation. Since then, two more soldiers, Captain Tejdeep Singh Rattan, a dentist and Specialist Simran Preet Singh Lamba, an army medic, have received waivers from the Army. The Army raised three concerns, whether he could wear a gas mask and a helmet and whether it would affect his "unit cohesion" or esprit de corps. Kalsi said he met all their concerns by wearing a helmet over his long hair wrapped by a 'patka' or sport bandana. "Never have I faced any problem or issues with my fellow soldiers," said Kalsi, 36, a father of two children, who is currently the medical director of emergency medical services at Fort Bragg. "We have sort of proven the concept that we not only make good soldiers, but great soldiers," added Kalsi, who is now waging a new campaign to get the rules that have prevented hundreds of Sikhs from joining the military repealed once for all. As part of the campaign, the Sikh Coalition, a community advocacy group, is engaging members of the US Congress and has launched an online petition to the White House. "Now the time has come for a broader policy to be adopted," said Kalsi, who would in September join the Army reserves for the next couple of years. "It's not acceptable that we look at it on an individual basis because the amount of effort that's required becomes a barrier to service, becomes an obstacle." "Basically we are being kept from being fully integrated with our communities here," Kalsi said. Incidents like the Aug 5, 2012 Oak Creek tragedy when a white supremacist shot to death six Sikh worshippers in a Wisconsin gurdwara could have been prevented if there were more Sikhs serving in the military, police or fire services, he said. "If a Sikh rescues your daughter, you're not going to feel any animosity towards that person. You'll say, "Wow that guy is a hero and is really part of my community.'" "That's the level of integration I am looking for," said Kalsi, whose parents came from India in 1978 when he was just two and spoke "Hindi, Punjabi and a little bit of English too." "The time has come for us to serve in our military, go into politics, and do all the wonderful things that it means to as an American," said Kalsi who calls New Jersey, where he grew up, home.

Major Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi

Washington, DC: "If the militaries in Canada, England, India and progressive nations allow Sikhs to serve in turbans and beards, then why can't the US?" That was the question that Major Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi, the first Sikh soldier in a generation allowed to keep the articles of his faith, posed to his commanders back in 2009 when he was told that he cannot wear his turban and beard while in service. Eight years earlier when he

joined the US army he had spoken with the recruiters and "they said 'it's not an issue, not a big deal' because they had seen other sardars in service," says Kalsi on phone from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Before the policy change in 1981 there were many Sikhs who served in all the branches of the military all the way from early 1900 and many serving Sikh soldiers were grandfathered in, he said naming two retired officers, Col G. B. Singh and Col Sekhon.

Telling Desi stories on celluloid

By Jinal Shah

f theres one thing that Indians across the world share, its their love for movies. This year marks the 100th year of Indian cinema and this vibrant movie making machine - worlds largest in terms of output - seems to be gaining momentum and strength across the world. Immigrants have brought their love of cinema to America, carrying memories of the golden age of cinema of the 50s, Young Indian Americans have acquired this passion for film from their immigrant parents and are making their own equally epic world of cinema. The compulsion to make movies about their roots began a few decades ago when young Indian Americans came of age and found brown faces were not represented at all in the mainstream cinema. American Desi was one of the first films to be made by this new generation telling their stories of cultural confusion and adjustment. Then came the wave of movies that reflected the post 9/11 mentality, where issues like identity crisis and racial discrimination dominated the screenplay and where South Asians were given roles of either victims or terrorists; these were mostly unbollywood movies. However this new wave of directors are not shying away from Bollywood and are trying hard to come out of the shadows of 9/11 by giving a fresh perspective to their desi stories. Two such films were recently screened in New York Ooops a Desi, a full length feature film and Back Up, a 35 minute short film. To start with, both movies are written, produced and directed by one time engineers of Indian origin -

one in Connecticut and the other in Edison. The length apart, both are fast paced thrillers and shot in the USA. Both movies open with a bomb sequence but thats where the similarities end. Ooops a Desi is director Jenner Joses second feature film after an intense psychological thriller Mask Face for Hollywood. The backdrop of this crime thriller revolves around Desis with invalid immigration status, that turns into a fast paced thriller. Ooops a Desi is slated to release worldwide through Mehmood Alis Pen N Camera international on July 26. It is a story of ordinary Desis (with an invalid immigration status) who find themselves in an alarming situation. This could either turn deadly for them or an improbable blessing in disguise that only the ending to this fast paced exciting thriller will reveal, said Jose, at the films premier screening at AMC Empire 25 in New York. The movie opens to a busy downtown street (in New York City). The passing pedestrians notice something very alarming. Its a Desi holding a visible sign. Sign states BOMB here!!! Soon we are taken to the story that occurred before

this incident. The guy with the Bomb Sign (Xavier), along with Dev do odd jobs because of their illegal immigration status in the USA. They have their own troubled past that is preventing them from returning to India. The roller-coaster begins when AJ, their roommate, is mysteriously abducted to which Sonia is a witness. Because of their illegal status, Dev and Xavier along with Sonia have no option but to take matters in their own hands. The movie has a fresh appeal with actors Adnan Khalid (as Dev), Pragathi Yadhati (as Sonia), Buali Shah (Xavier), Gideon Samson (as AJ), Anil Sachdeva, Manohar Pinnama Raju, and Siddharth Gupta, who are trained from the New York Film Academy, Lee Strasberg, etc. Most of the actors are full time bankers or financial analysts or IT managers and continue to pursue acting at the side. Some of the actors are debutant, while some have acted in short films and even feature films. I wanted this movie to be a launch pad for many who want to enter Bollywood. So you will see many first timers from actors to cinematographer, said Jose who describes the film as independent

(non studio sponsored) Bollywood film. Songs in the movie cover a range of styles from romantic, rap, sad, club and motivational themes that work well with the urban youth. The music of the movie has been given by Gufy, Gaurav H. Singh, Saurav Malhotra , Bharat Hans, Hardik Dave & Debyajeet Sahoo and Suryaveer Hooja.

Back Up
Many emerging filmmakers are starting out with short films and going the feature film route. Writer, producer, director Eshwar Gunturu, who has just finished his first short film Back Up, is one of them. His short too is an intense psychological thriller depicting love, hatred and other extreme emotions in life. The movie has an interesting plot - it starts off with a suicide bomber preparing to carry out his mission somewhere in New York City and all seems to be going well. On the other side, there is a normal man, Dr. Haq, who has some abnormal issues with his wife. The movie takes a turn when suddenly the suicide bomber vanishes and the terrorists have no one to take his

place. Enter Dr. Haq. In the next 35 minutes, Eshwar and his team have worked really hard to show the play of human emotions and raw manipulations that can take a man from leading a quiet life to being a destructive monster. This movie is not about the story or the people who play parts in it. Its about human emotions and interactions. Its about the ability to brainwash people. Its about the evil that resides deep within us its eerie, dark and exciting to say the least, said the director. The movie has some great talent. The first 7-10 minutes are pretty intense and are well enacted by Ashok Chaudhary (as Jai Mathur) and Sweta Keswani (as Deepti Mathur). Sweta is known in Indian television for her performances in 'Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki', 'Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand', 'Baa Bahu aur Baby' and 'Adaalat' Post 9/11, majority of the Indian American films either are based on, or touch upon issues like identity crisis or racial profiling. The new wave of directors including Jose have deliberately steered away from such stereotyping. Although his film does deal with a certain post 9/11 mentality, he states his movie, Ooops a Desi, has nothing to do with the post 9/11 era. Its an out and out commercial Bollywood film with song and dance and no serious message, he says.

House votes out bill to restrict NSA surveillance

Washington: The House narrowly rejected a challenge to the National Security Agency's secret collection of hundreds of millions of Americans' phone records Wednesday after a fierce debate pitting privacy rights against the government's efforts to thwart terrorism. The vote was 217-205 on an issue that created unusual political coalitions in Washington, with libertarian-leaning conservatives and liberal Democrats pressing for the change against the Obama administration, the Republican establishment and Congress' national security experts. The showdown vote marked the first chance for lawmakers to take a stand on the secret surveillance program since former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden leaked classified documents last month that spelled out the monumental scope of the government's activities. It is unlikely to be the final word on government intrusion to defend the nation and Americans' civil liberties. Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, chief sponsor of the repeal effort, said his aim was to end the indiscriminate collection of Americans' phone records. His measure, offered as an addition to a $598.3 billion defense spending bill for 2014, would have canceled the statutory authority for the NSA program, ending the agency's ability to collect phone records and metadata under the USA Patriot Act unless it identified an individual under investigation. Amash told the House that his effort was to defend the Constitution and "defend the privacy of every American." Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Congress has authorized -- and a Republican and a Democratic president have signed -- extensions of the powers to search records and conduct roving wiretaps in pursuit of terrorists. The White House and the director of the NSA, Army Gen. Keith Alexander, made last-minute appeals to lawmakers, urging them to oppose the amendment.

New York: New York City Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday vetoed two measures meant to curb the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policing policy, setting up a likely showdown with the City Council. Bloomberg called the bills dangerous and irresponsible and said they would make the city less safe. One measure would create an independent inspector general to monitor the NYC Police Department. The other would expand the definition of racial profiling and allow people who believe they have been profiled to sue police in state court. Bloomberg has defended the poli-

cy of stopping, questioning and frisking suspected wrongdoers to fight crime. Opponents of stop-and-frisk, among them minority groups, civil libertarians and some of the Democratic mayoral candidates, have said police officers disproportionately target young black and Hispanic men. Each of the measures, together called the Community Safety Act, passed the 51-member City Council with the two-thirds majority necessary to override a veto. City Council members who back the measures vowed to override Bloomberg's vetoes.

Weiner defies calls to quit mayoral bid over more sexting

New York: Anthony Weiner resisted mounting calls to bow out of the New York City mayoral race on Wednesday, a day after admitting he had continued sexting that led him to resign from Congress in disgrace two years ago. Weiner, who took the lead in several polls soon after announcing his political comeback in May, said in an email to supporters that he should have been clearer about how long the behavior had persisted but that he hoped voters would give him another chance. The New York Times and the New York Daily News both published editorials on Wednesday urging Weiner, a Democrat who was once a leading liberal voice in Congress, to end his mayoral bid. "The serially evasive Mr. Weiner should take his marital troubles and personal compulsions out of the public eye, away from cameras, off the Web and out of the race for mayor of New York City," the New York Times wrote in its lead editorial, adding he had "disqualified himself" for public service. Weiner told a news conference on Anthony Weiner Tuesday he had sent lewd images of himself to women online until at least last summer. The New York Post, known for its outrageous headlines, went with "Meet Carlos Danger" - a reference to Weiner's reported pseudonym in the online chats with a woman he met over the Internet. Weiner insisted he would not drop out. In his email, he said his campaign was about something larger than himself and that he would not "leave New Yorkers without a choice."

Opposition blasts government over poverty data

Did not sign 'deny Modi visa' letter: MPs

New Delhi: The controversy around the letter seeking denial of US visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi deepened, as many MPs whose name appears on it said they did not sign any such letter. The Congress said it has nothing to do with the controversy. Senior Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury Wednesday said he did not sign the letter, and called it a "cut and paste" job. Mohammad Adeeb, the Rajya Sabha member who had faxed the letter, however, maintained it was genuine. DMK's member from the Rajya Sabha K.P. Ramalingam, CPI MP Achutan, Nationalist Congress Party MPs Vandana Chavan and Sanjeev Naik, and Congress MPs Marotrao Kowase, Anil Lad and Jayantrao Avale have all denied signing the letter. "I deny having signed any such letter," Yechury said. "The one circulating in cyberspace, now many months after it was allegedly signed, is typed on the letterhead of an MP that carries the insignia of our national symbol, the Ashok Chakra. The heading under which some signatures are appended says: 'Names and signatures of Indian MPs'," Yechury pointed out. "Strange, which other country's MPs would sign on the letterhead of the Indian parliament? This itself suggests some efforts at cut and paste," Yechury said. "It is not in my nature to write to presidents of other countries telling them what they should do with the visas of Indian nationals," the CPI-M leader said. The letter, carrying the signatures of many Indian parliamentarians, was dispatched to both the US president and the British prime minister last year. A copy of the letter was resent to the White House after Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh, on a recent visit to the US, asked the government there to issue a visa to Modi. The letter was forwarded by Rajya Sabha's Independent member Mohammed Adeeb, who expressed shock at Yechury's reaction. "I am shocked. I don't believe that a person like

The Planning Commission showed that the percentage of people below poverty line declined sharply to 21.9

New Delhi: Planning Commission figures of poverty reduction in India triggered a furore with the BJP and the CPI-M accusing the government of ignoring reality and Congress ally NCP also expressing its reservations. The Congress, however, said that poverty had come down in the country due to the pro-poor policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said Planning Commission figures of poverty reduction were a conspiracy against the poor, designed to deprive them of welfare schemes. "It is a despicable attempt to improve the governance record of UPA government closer to elections.

The benchmark has been kept low to improve the report card," he said. He asked the Congress to demonstrate how one can live on an income of Rs.34 a day. The Planning Commission showed that the percentage of people below poverty line declined sharply to 21.9 in the 2011-12 financial year from 37.2 recorded in 2004-05. The national poverty line, by using the Tendulkar methodology, has been estimated at Rs.816 per capita per month in villages and Rs.1,000 per capita per month in cities. This means that people whose daily consumption of goods and services exceed worth Rs.33.33 in cities and Rs.27.20 in villages did not fall in the poverty category.

Yechury is saying something like this. I have his signature. His name is ninth in the list. How can I paste it? I am a member of parliament and I cannot do such a thing. If he says that I have cheated him, I will take him to court," Adeeb said. "I would welcome it if a probe is done. Will resign from the Rajya Sabha and go to jail if signatures on the letter to Obama are forged," Adeeb tweeted Wednesday afternoon. Earlier, Adeeb said that "40 MPs from the Rajya Sabha and 25 from the Lok Sabha" signed the letter, which was written in November 2012, before the Gujarat assembly elections. BJP MP from Jharkhand's Lohardaga Sudarshan Bhagat, meanwhile, wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar urging her for a probe into the alleged forgery. The party also accused the Congress' "dirty tricks department" of being behind the letter. "These are serious charges and amount to forgery. I have demanded that the speaker order an impartial inquiry, and action should be taken against those responsible," he said. "The denial by some MPs of having written to Obama shows that this is a clear conspiracy of the dirty tricks department of the Congress. Some MPs have said their signatures were forged. There should be a thorough probe into the matter and the guilty should be booked," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

SC committee says no to GM crops

The expert committee also said a no to the herbicide tolerant (HT) crops, saying they would most likely exert a highly adverse impact over time on sustainable agriculture, rural livelihoods and environment. The report comes at a time when there are differences over the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) Bill, 2013, which is pending with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forest. In 2010, the then environment and forests minister Jairam Ramesh imposed an indefinite moratorium on the commercial introduction of GM brinjal following several public hearings. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture, in a report August 2012 had asked for ban on GM food crops in the country, while industry has been calling for their introduction to ensure food security. More than 150 scientists wrote to the Environment and Forest Minister Jayanthi Natarajan early this year, raising concerns about GM crops.

Mid-Day meal: Nitish sounds conspiracy

New Delhi: A Supreme Court technical expert committee recommended an indefinite moratorium on the field trials of Genetically Modified (GM) crops till the government comes out with a proper regulatory and safety mechanism. The expert committee in its report to the Supreme Court said there should be a moratorium on field trials for Genetically Modified food crops like Bt Brinjal intended for commercialization until there is more definitive information from sufficient number of studies as to their long-term safety.

"Based on the examination of the safety dossiers, it is apparent that there are major gaps in the regulatory system. These need to be addressed before issues related to tests can be meaningfully considered. Till such time it would not be advisable to conduct more field trials," it said. On the genetic modification of crops for which India is a center of origin like rice, brinjal, and mustard, the committee recommended that "release of GM crops for which India is a center of origin or diversity should not be allowed".

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar

Patna: The principal of a government primary school in Bihar where 23 children died after eating contaminated food was arrested even as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the incident "did not look like an accident". Minutes before she was arrested, school principal Meena Devi demanded a CBI probe into the tragedy. Superintendent of Police Sujit Kumar said over telephone that Meena Devi, the principal of the school at Gandaman village in

Saran district where the tragedy occured, was arrested by the Special Investigation Team. A first information report has been registered against her on penal charges of murder and criminal conspiracy, police said. Commenting on the deaths of the children, Nitish Kumar said: "This does not look like an accident." Meanwhile, three lakh school teachers in Bihar have decided to boycott the mid-day meal scheme from July 25 to get rid of non-academic work.

Full meal in Mumbai at Rs 12: Raj Babbar

New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar said it was possible to have " full meal at Rs 12 in Mumbai" even today, a remark that drew sharp reaction from BJP, which dubbed it "laughable". Babbar said this at the AICC briefing in response to a volley of questions as he tried to explain that poverty has come down even as prices have risen. He was also asked about lower cutoff of expenditure limit to determine poverty and that how can the poor be able to have their full meal two times with a daily expenditure as low as Rs 28 or Rs 32 per day. "People should have full meals two times a day. How one can have it is a very good question that you have asked. Even today in Mumbai city, I can have a full meal at Rs 12. No no not bada paav. So much of rice, daal saambhar and with that some vegetables are also mixed," he told reporters.

No change in India's Sri Lanka policy: PM

Chennai: Manmohan Singh has assured that there is no change in the country's policy regarding "reconciliation and devolution of political powers in Sri Lanka", said a letter which the prime minister wrote to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Singh said in the July 16 letter: "There is absolutely no change in government of India's stand on the question of reconciliation and devolution of political powers in Sri Lanka." "We have long advocated the creation of an environment in Sri Lanka in which all communities, particularly the Sri Lankan Tamils, are masters of their own destiny within the framework of a united Sri Lanka. We will continue to work towards this end," he added in the letter's text distributed to the media here Thursday. Manmohan Singh was replying to Jayalalithaa's letter July 14 in which she had urged the former to exert pressure so the Sri Lankan government did not repeal or dilute a constitutional provision (13th amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution), ensuring autonomy to provinces and minorities. Jayalalithaa also requested the central government to ensure the process of democratic decentralisation, integral to the survival of Tamils in Sri Lanka, was not jeopardized.

Don't violate party line, Congress distances itself Rahul tells spokespersons from Shakeel's tweet
New Delhi: Ahead of the 2014 general elections, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi asked party spokespersons across the country to speak in one voice, and follow the official line, party sources said. Rahul Gandhi, who addressed the two-day allIndia communication workshop at which around 300 party spokespersons and media panellists were present, urged them to realize the power of truth and said they should be polite but firm during TV debates, and not stoop to the levels of their counterparts. Highlighting the importance of social media, Gandhi also asked the spokespersons to be alert to it. The United Progressive Alliance's key social welfare initiative, the food security ordinance, topped the agenda on the first day of the workshop. Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution K.V. Thomas and Rural New Delhi: The Congress has sought to distance itself from the remark of party leader Shakeel Ahmed, who tweeted that the 2002 Gujarat riots led to the formation of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM). "It is not the party line as of now," Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary told reporters. However, she attacked Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over the riots. "Whatever happened in Gujarat, the manner in which people of a particular community were killed, such an incident has not happened anywhere else," Chowdhary said. Senior Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh, however, supported Shakeel Ahmed. "Religious fundamentalism is at the root of terrorism," Digvijaya Singh told reporters, while explaining that even before BJP leader Narendra Modi became the chief minister of Gujarat, his party had been practising

Development Minister Jairam Ramesh briefed the gathering about the food ordinance, which aims to provide subsidised food grain to around 67 percent of India's 1.2 billion people. Congress MP Deepender Hooda's team educated the spokespersons on the effective use of social media to put across their views. Finance Minister P. Chidambaram briefed the audience on the state of the Indian economy and the

future ahead, with a comparison of the growth achieved in the past nine years under the governance of the United Progressive Alliance, with the performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance in 1998-2004. A tweet from Ahmad alleging that the banned terror outfit "Indian Mujahideen was formed after the Gujarat riots" stirred a political storm Sunday, with the BJP reacting sharply to it. Meanwhile, the Congress supported Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who said he

does not want Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to become India's prime minister as he does not have secular credentials. "He is a Nobel laureate. He has a particular ideology but we should respect him," Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar told reporters. Coming out strongly against Modi, the well known economist had also criticised his model of governance in Gujarat, saying he did not approve of it.

New CJI slams decision of just-retired CJI Kabir

New Delhi: In an unprecedented development, a bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam strongly disapproved of a series of orders passed by a bench headed by his immediate predecessor Altamas Kabir granting relief to Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL) by virtually sitting in appeal over the order of another bench of the apex court which had declined to give concession to the construction and infrastructure group. The orders passed by the bench headed by the ex-CJI helped the company dodge depositing Rs 100 crore as penalty that Himachal Pradesh high court had slapped on it in May last year for misrepresenting facts for securing clearances to set up a cement plant. While an SC bench headed by Justice A K Patnaik in November last year refused to stay the HC order and asked the company to meet the deadline for depositing the penalty, the bench led by exCJI Kabir passed orders enabling the company to defer paying the fine, before staying the HC order. "We do not approve of the manner in which the interim orders came to be passed. We do not sit on appeal over orders passed by a coordinate bench. These orders

No apprehension of Bengal getting divided: Mamata

Kolkata: At a time when the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has declared it will renew its demand for a separate Gorkhaland, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said there was no apprehension of a division of the state. "The hills are smiling and so are the plains of Terrai and Dooars. Today there is no bloodshed for a separate state, people are not apprehensive that the state would be divided," Banerjee said during a party rally in Jalpaiguri district. Campaigning for her party candidates for the ongoing panchayat polls, she credited her government for establishing peace in the hill region and iterated that both plains and hills would continue to coexist peacefully. With the Congress Working Committee slated to decide on the creation of Telangana - a separate state by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh, the GJM too has said it will renew its demand for Gorkhaland if Telangana was allowed. "If a decision can be taken for a separate state of Telangana, then the government should also create a separate state of Gorkhaland as it has been demanded for the past 100 years," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri had said. The CWC is scheduled to meet July 29 and likely to take a call on Telangana. The dragging campaign for the separate state of Gorkhaland has led to the loss of many lives over the past two decades, besides hitting the economic mainstays -tea, timber and tourism of the northern hills of the state. On July 18, 2012, a tripartite agreement was signed between the GJM and the state and central governments for setting up a new autonomous, elected GTA -- a hill council armed with more powers than its predecessor, the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council formed in the late 1980s.

should not have been passed," a bench of CJI Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi said on Wednesday as it rejected JAL's plea for extension of deadline for payment of Rs 25 crore as this year's installment for the Rs 100 crore penalty. Despite senior advocate A M Singhvi making attempts to defend JAL, the bench of Justices Sathasivam and Gogoi made no secret of its strong displeasure over the manner in which the matter had been taken up and interim orders passed, which were in

direct conflict with earlier orders of the apex court. "We are clear in our mind about what has happened," the bench said when Singhvi alleged that Sanjay Parikh, the counsel for the NGO which challenged JAL's cement plant, was trying to confuse the matter by referring to different orders. Appearing before Justices Sathasivam and Gogoi, Parikh narrated the sequence of orders and wondered whether the ex-CJI headed benches could have sat in appeal over the orders passed by a coordinate bench.

Modi playing into Congress hands?

By Amulya Ganguli ajor and minor tremors have continued to rock the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ever since Narendra Modi's appointment as the campaign chief for the 2014 general elections. While the Janata Dal-United's decision to break away from its alliance with the BJP, and senior leader L.K. Advani's patent dissatisfaction with Modi's elevation can be counted as major shocks, the minor ones include the resignation of a BJP vice president, Amir Raza Hussain, in protest against the Gujarat strongman's use of the word burqa, or veil, to describe the Congress's tactics. Modi's comment that the Congress covered itself with the burqa of secularism whenever it was in trouble might have been regarded as an attempt at humor, but the BJP's former member saw it as a dig against the practice of Muslim women covering themselves with an all-enveloping cloak. The observation can also be interpreted as a sly reiteration of the longstanding saffron equation of secularism with the Congress's policy of minority "appeasement". The remark might not have touched a raw nerve if, in an interview with a foreign news

agency, Modi had not compared the impact of the Gujarat riots on him with the pain caused by the running over of a puppy by a car. To make matters worse, the chief minister had boasted during the interview that he was a Hindu nationalist. The observation led to the Congress's Digvijay Singh asking why he didn't call himself an Indian nationalist. Since then, posters proclaiming Modi's patriotism and Hindu nationalism have appeared in Mumbai, provoking speculation about the BJP's line. What these episodes show is how closely each of Modi's words and deeds is scrutinized because of his deeply-hued saffron background. To compound the situation, the assertion by his aide, Amit Shah, that the Ram temple will be built in Ayodhya, and Modi's own visit to the Jagannath temple in Puri, have tended to confirm the impression that he is taking the party back to its hardline Hindutva agenda. The suspicion is deepened by the fact that the Hindu supremacist Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) has seemingly thrown its full weight behind Modi and clearly wants him to be the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. Yet, if the BJP is taking its time over naming him, it is probably

because of two reasons. One is the internal opposition by Advani and Co. and the other is the fear that his projection will restrict the BJP's appeal mainly to its core group of supporters to the exclusion of minorities and liberals. It is in this context that Modi's latest utterances have been seen as playing into the Congress's hands. The eagerness with which Congressmen have sought to counter Modi - the veil of secularism is better than "naked communalism", as Ajay Maken said shows that they are happy to lure the BJP's poster boy into the secular vs communal debate where he will be at a disadvantage. The Congress will be pleased, however, if he continues in the same vein. There is little doubt that the party will be uneasy with any focus on governance, considering how its own "deficits" in this respect were noted by union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram not long ago. On the secular-communal divide, however, it apparently feels that it is on a much stronger wicket although a section of the media feels that there is too much emphasis on the majority-minority factor. But, for the Congress, it is the only subject on which it can hold forth with some assurance since the background of scams, policy

Bodh Gaya bombings: Actionable intelligence gone waste

By Monish Gulati wo monks, a Myanmarese and a Tibetan, were injured in a coordinated terror attack at Bodh Gaya in Gaya district of Bihar on July 7. Bihar Police confirmed that 10 lowintensity serial bombings occurred between 5.30 and 5:58 a.m. at and around the Mahabodhi temple site. Another three bombs were defused. The bombs had been placed at virtually all places of significance, including the Bodhi tree, in the temple complex spread over an area of 12 acres. The incident, before it joins the growing record of solved/unsolved terror attacks in India, needs to be revisited simply for the unnerving ineffectiveness of the response of the politico-security establishment. According to Ajai Sahni, executive director, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP), rarely has precedent intelligence been as specific as it was in the case of the threat to the Mahabodhi temple. Indian

Buddhist monks participate in a candle-light vigil condemning serial blasts at Bodh Gaya, Bihar.

Mujahideen (IM) operatives, arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell in September-October 2012, had revealed during interrogation that Dilsukhnagar in Hyderabad and the Mahabodhi temple had been reconnoitered by them as likely targets. The Delhi Police Special Cell accordingly warned Bihars Director General of Police and the Superintendent

of Police, Gaya. The reliability of the advisory and the likelihood of an attack on the Mahabodhi temple were reinforced on Feb 21, 2013, when twin bombs went off at Dilsukhnagar, killing 17 people. To the credit of the Bihar Police, after receiving the intelligence advisory in October 2012, a platoon of the Special Task Force (STF) was deployed at the

Mahabodhi temple on a permanent basis as per media reports. It is not confirmed whether this STF comprised of the Special Auxiliary Police (SAP), which has ex-army men, and had been constituted to assist Bihar Police against organised crime and Maoists. Additional security measures, including installation of CCTV cameras in and around the temple, round-theclock patrolling by the police on Gaya-Dobhi and Gaya-Falgu roads and deployment of women police at the temple for frisking women pilgrims, were put in place. Also, a control room was to be set up at the Bodh Gaya police station located adjacent to the Mahabodhi temple to monitor activities and coordinate security. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) too had warned the Bihar government twice over the past three months that Bodh Gaya was on the target of terrorist groups and provided sketches of two suspects just a fortnight before the attack. The DIG of Police, Magadh range consequently reviewed the security

arrangements with the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) a few days before the bombings. Despite the fact that the entire police security procedure was followed in the days leading up to the incident, the terror attack took place, and as per last reports, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was probing the bomb attacks from the international, Maoist and communal angles. The incident raises key questions on the ability of the local law enforcement agencies, the cutting edge, in responding to terror threats even when actionable intelligence is available. The issues of police reform and augmenting the capacity (qualitative and quantitative) of the local police have been debated ad nauseum after every terror attack. The internal security situation in the country will increase the demand for physical security and, given government constraints, private security is the way forward. Bodh Gaya shows that there is a crying need for professionalization of these services.

National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, Ambassador Nirupama Rao and Foreign Secretary-designate Sujatha Singh were present during the talks, said sources. Earlier, Biden called on Vice President Hamid Ansari where he outlined President Barack Obama's and his "personal commitment and interest" in expansion of India-US relations and said India's Look East policy was complementary to America's "re-balancing towards Asia". Ahead of his trip, Biden had said his visit to India and Singapore was intended to reinforce the White House strategy of 'rebalancing' towards Asia and the Pacific. The Democratic Party politician, who is visiting India with his wife Jill Biden, also called on President Pranab Mukherjee, and met United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Biden meets Indian business honchos to boost trade

Mumbai: US Vice President Joe Biden met top India Inc. leaders, including Ratan Tata and Azim Premji, as he discussed ways to enhance bilateral trade exponentially over time and address issues hindering trade. Biden, who is in Indias commercial capital on the second leg of his tour, met the Indian business leaders, shortly after delivering a speech at the Bombay Stock Exchange in Mumbai. Biden held discussions with Ratan Tata, former head of Tata Group, Azim Premji, chief of Wipro, Pratyush Kumar, president of Boeing in India, and other business leaders at the Taj Mahal hotel here for nearly an hour. The talks were full and frank, Biden said later. There was an honest discussion about how both governments - the Indian government as well as US could be productive in reducing trade barriers that have an impact on trade and commerce, the US vice president said. US businesses and members of Congress have voiced concern over the buy India mandate, which requires a percentage of technology goods in the country to be manufactured locally. The US has also voiced concerns over Indias intellectual property regime, which the US feels hampers Indias ability to attract foreign investment. These policies, the US feels, distort trade and investment and discourage innovation. After the meeting with business

Biden bats for more biz between India-US

Mumbai: US Vice President Joe Biden called for further expanding the growing economic cooperation with India and expressed hope that, if right choices are made, bilateral trade could grow five-fold. Lauding India as "a rising power", Biden patted its plans for future growth, saying the country had risen exponentially during the past decade mainly due to bold steps towards liberalization it took in 1991. In this context, Biden said trade between India and the US grew five-fold to touch $100 billion in the past 13 years. He was speaking on 'US-India Partnership' at the Bombay Stock Exchange. "We see tremendous opportunity and there is no reason, that if our countries make the right choices, the trade cannot grow five-fold or more," Biden said. Welcoming the relaxation of FDI norms in certain sectors, Biden felt that a lot more was needed to be done to remove trade barriers. "We have to do a lot of work on a wide range of issues like limit in FDI, inconsistent tax system, market access barriers, civil nuclear cooperation, bilateral investment treaty and policies protecting innovations," Biden said. The first US vice president to visit India in over three decades, Biden appreciated India's regional role and welcomed its engagement and efforts to develop new trade and transportation links by land and by sea. Simultaneously, he acknowledged the role of the Indian community in America's growth story saying the US has benefitted due to the "Indian human capital". Biden said both the US and India have been targeted by terrorists and sought enhanced cooperation to tackle terrorism.

heads, Biden said India and the United States are not at odds on any strategic objective, but need to find ways to take the Indo-US relationship forward. We mean what we say when we say that the relationship between India and the US has unlimited potential and there is no reason why trade, commerce and intercourse between our countries cant increase exponentially over time, he said. Biden emphasised that both sides share a common goal of empowering their middle classes. The US is focused on reinforcing the middle class with good jobs, better access to healthcare and opportunities for a dignified retirement, he said, while India hopes to generate the largest middle class in the history of humanity to deal with poverty and raise standards of living. US keen to boost economic, strategic ties with India

Washington: Asserting that President Barack Obama highly values US relationship with India, the White House has declared that it wants to continue to enhance US economic and strategic engagement with New Delhi. That's the message Vice President Joe Biden, who was currently on a visit to India, is carrying "in his meetings with Indian officials," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters when asked if Biden was carrying a message from Obama. "There are enormous opportunities for our two countries to work together and to work together even more closely than we have as this relationship has evolved in a positive direction now for so many years," Carney said. There's a lot that Biden is discussing in India "when it comes to economic growth, trade, energy and climate change, as well as security issues and education issues," he said, Before he departed, Biden was very much looking forward to his India trip, Carney said. "He and the President highly value our relationship with India, and are looking for ways to make it even stronger and more cooperative." Asked about the issue of visas

Joe Biden: From a rival to Obama's close confidant

Washington: In India this week on a mission to deepen what President Barack Obama has called "a defining partnership of the 21st century", US Vice President Joe Biden has emerged as a key confidant of his one-time rival. Since Obama offered him the vice presidency after Biden's unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, he has offered the president advice on all matters domestic and foreign like a true running mate. For matters foreign, he is uniquely qualified having served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as chairman or ranking member since 1997. Playing a "pivotal role in shaping US foreign policy," Biden "has been at the forefront of issues and legislation related to terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, post-Cold War Europe, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia," as the White House website puts it. Now, as the 47th Vice President, "Biden continues to draw on his foreign policy experience, advising the President on a multitude of international issues," it says. Shunning the vice president's traditional role in the shadows, Biden has been at the forefront, from helping "secure the Senate's approval of the New START

In support of Obama administration's effort to rebalance its policy towards the Asia Pacific, he has travelled to China, Japan, and Mongolia and is now headed to India described by a senior administration official as "obviously a key player and increasingly so in the Asia Pacific region." Born November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the first of four siblings, Biden graduated from the University of Delaware and Syracuse Law School and served on the New Castle County Council. Then, at age 29, he became one of the youngest people

ever elected to the US Senate. Just weeks after the election, tragedy struck the Biden family, when Biden's wife, Neilia, and their 1-year old daughter, Naomi, were killed and their two young sons critically injured in an auto accident. Biden was sworn in to the US Senate at his sons' hospital bedside and began commuting to Washington every day by train, a practice he maintained throughout his career in the Senate. In 1977, Biden married Jill Jacobs. Jill Biden, who holds a PhD in Education, has been an educator for over two decades and currently teaches at a Washingtonarea community college.

Las Vegas proves as good as its reputation.

A section of the Las Vegas Strip.

The opulent Bellagio hotel's famed fountains perform a visual water symphony several times a day.

By Jinal Shah fter being struck by the overwhelming natural beauty of Lake Tahoe it was time to reconnect with the concrete jungle, so where to go? Well I could head to Los Angles and hope to brush elbows with a famous movie star or two. Or I could make my way to San Diego, watch the dolphin show and be bored out of my mind in a day. But why would I do any of that when Las Vegas beckons with her charm and wry ways, to entangle in a Memorial Day none of us would ever forget? When we landed at the McCarran airport, Las Vegas to the celebratory sound of electronic slot machines, a huge smile crept over our faces instantly. More, walking through the airport to baggage claim, we passed clusters of slot machines and thought: this has to be the most fun airport ever! Theres nothing that says Welcome to Las Vegas quite like the sight and sound of slot machines, not even the famous Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas neon. Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas is a busy time of the year - that is when there will be something going on at every hotel, bar, nightclub, pool, or simply put, the entire strip. However, prices for this particular weekends razzle dazzle and kitschy glamour were jacked up. For example, we paid $240 for a two queen bed accommodation for two

Be forewarned, the house always wins.

nights at an off strip hotel that usually costs less than $160. Las Vegas is a convention city with 19 of the 25 largest hotels in the world. It's a bachelor/bachelorette party draw and host to more than 100,000 weddings a year. It's a place to take in spectacular shows, or a place for addicted gamblers to lose track of time. This is a city where inhibitions are not welcome: While you may not want to go as far as to reenact The Hangover, you certainly don't want to leave without experiencing a bit of Viva Las Vegas. So the night we landed, we wasted no time and set out to explore this desert oasis of neon lights, blaring music, casinos and luxury hotels as well as tatty flyers advertising adult shows. When the dusk set in and the pool parties tapered off, partygoers were out on the strip, club hopping for some night time entertainment. Las Vegas, of course, is home to perhaps the most active nightlife anywhere. During Memorial Day weekend, nightclubs along the Las Vegas Strip amp up their game by bringing in hot disc jockeys as well as celebrity guest appearances to die for. So we too joined the revelry at Hyde, a happening lounge cum night club at Bellagio overlooking the iconic Bellagio Fountains. Although there is a hefty cover charge, one can always charm the bouncers. We were let in for a mere $20! The party lasted for an hour but loved the crazy confetti shower and neon lights. Vegas has maintained its glitzy, risqu, anything-goes attitude for decades, and the party is still going strong. Even at 4 am in the morning, the strip looked lively with party lovers in between clubs dancing with their yard drinks and Elvis Presley impersonator. The following day we were on a hotel viewing marathon. The hotel ads here tout a world of luxury suites, celebrity restaurants, VIP club lounges, and haute boutiques. The hotels literally glow and the wonders within them are second only to their lovely edifices. The Bellagio, Venetian, Caesars Palace, Wynn, Four Seasons, MGM Grand and Cosmopolitan are representative of the luxury youll find all over the strip. Then there are the hotels whose names alone will tell you what to expect: New York New York, Paris, Monte Carlo and Circus Circus boast elaborate themed resorts, with miniature versions of the Eiffel tower or the New York skyline complete with a replica of the Empire State Building and Statue of liberty. Luxor

and Excalibur are well known for Egyptian pyramid and medieval castle-like appearance respectively. When it comes to getting a feel of the city, travel writers say there's no better way to do it than from above. Attractions like the Stratosphere and Paris, Las Vegas Eiffel Tower experience are a good way to get a birds-eye view of America's playground. For 20 bucks or so visitors can ride three of the most terrifying rides X scream, big shot and insanity. For the faint of hearts like me there are some more rides in New York New York, if thats any consolation. Weddings are the other industry in Las Vegas - the classic place for lightning-quick, starry hitching. Vegas came to be known as the marriage capital of the world as a result of the ease of acquiring a marriage license and the minimal costs involved. The city continues to be known as a popular wedding destination for the same reasons, but also as a result of the various types of weddings available. Today, almost every hotel in Vegas has its own chapel, ever since the local law made it impossible to build a free standing wedding chapel on the strip. When it comes to wedding chapels, you wont find a bigger assortment than here. And in case you are in a hurry, drive-thru weddings are also available. By Monday morning the crowds receded. This was the best time for us to nab big savings. For the next two days we stayed at the "crown jewel" of the strip. With its Italian theme, eight-acre lake and water show, Bellagio is a celebrated landmark in Vegas. The most opulent hotel also houses several of Las Vegas most intriguing attractions - The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art that hosts rotating exhibitions, the blooming flowers and exotic plants in the hotels magnificent conservatory and botanical gardens stand in stark contrast to the concrete jungle just outside. The glass artworks on the lobby ceiling are breathtaking. Its famous fountains are also a draw. Many times each day, these aquatic wonders perform a visual water symphony, choreographed to popular and classical songs. This mesmerizing display makes for a genuinely romantic, and quintessentially Las Vegas experience. Vegas is also an incredible city for musical and arts performances. One of the most popular is Cirque de Soleil, a theater company that presents a mix of circus performance and street entertainment. Cirque de Soleil offers seven different shows in Las Vegas, the most

talked about being "O", playing at the Bellagio since 1988, that has over 70 swimmers, divers, aerialists, contortionists and clowns performing acrobatic feats around a pool/stage containing 1.5 million gallons of water. As O plays out on water, all the acts are choreographed to discuss the various ways water interacts with people: the still, beautiful aspect of water as well as the angry and violent nature of water. Fortunately, we got the best seats (at $120 apiece) and by the end of the 90-minute show, I was blown away. Other famous shows include Zarkhana, Blue Man Group, Beatles, Le Reve, Vegas! The Show that run the gamut from sensuality to Beatles music. After a sumptuous free breakfast (courtesy my persistent following with hotels.com) and three days of neon overload, it was time to head out of town to a natural marvel - the Grand Canyon. P.S. In my last article I promised to tell you about my gambling foray in Las Vegas? Well, gambling isnt my thing but I simply had to try my luck at one of the massive casinos dotting the Sin City. So I tried my hand at craps - a dice game in which the players make wagers on the outcome of the roll, or a series of rolls, of a pair of dice. Excited as a kid, I started with 50 bucks and wrapped up in record 10 minutes! Needless to say I lost all the money. Didnt anyone tell me the house always wins! Next edition: Los Angeles. Large-scale fraud of visa system by Indian professor honored at London Ealing Mayor's parlor Indian students: Australian audit
Melbourne: Thousands of Indian students and skilled workers on 457 foreign worker visa scheme entered Australia on dodgy travel and work documents from 2008-10, according to a report. The immigration department's internal audits show fraud rates touching 50 per cent and reveal that it has struggled to properly identify people who were entering the country, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said on Monday. "Identity fraud is a significant risk in the Indian caseload given how easily genuine documents with fraudulent details can be obtained," according to one of the documents obtained by the ABC. The large scale prevalence of identity theft because of low level of technology in Indian passports led to a significant level of fraud during 2008, 2009 and 2010 but has been brought under control since then, according to the documents. Reacting to the report, Immigration Department spokesperson Sandi Logan admitted the figures from 2008-09 financial year were troubling. "Around the periods of 2008, 2009, 2010, the fraud levels were quite considerable, a matter of real concern to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship," he said. However, adding that things had changed, Logan added: "We're quite confident that those people who were issued with a visa, 99.9 per cent are who they say they are and are doing what they said they would do when they were granted visa." The ABC report, whose Freedom of Information request to the department took two years to be processed, published the results of its investigation on Monday. In case of Indian student visas, the department found a 37 per cent fraud rate from 41,636 lodgements in 2008-09. London: Surjit Hans, an 82-year-old Indian professor who translated all works of William Shakespeare into Punjabi, has been honored with a bust of the 18th century Bard of Avon at Ealing Mayor's parlor here. Ealing Mayor Kamaljit S Dhindsa and deputy leader of the Labor Party of Ealing Council Ranjit Dheer presented the bust to Hans in appreciation of his works including translation of 38 plays of Shakespeare. Hans, taught history at Amritsar's Guru Nanak Dev University, said he is currently translating Charles Darwin's 'The Origin of Species' into Punjabi. Virendra Sharma, Labor MP, Onkar Sahota, London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon, Hari Singh, leading NRI solicitor and founder chairman of the H S Law solicitors and several councilors were present on the occasion.

Indian diaspora engagement meets held in Indonesia

Jakarta: The Indian embassy in Jakarta organized two events in association with India's Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Overseas Indian Facilitation Centre (OIFC) this month to acquaint overseas Indians in Indonesia with business opportunities in India. Called Indian Diaspora Engagement Meets, the first event was held at Medan, the capital of the Indonesian province of North Sumatra July 16, and the second event was held in Indonesian capital Jakarta July 18. The objective of these events was to acquaint non-resident Indians (NRIs) and persons of Indian origin (PIOs) in Indonesia with the various trade and investment opportunities in India which could benefit their businesses and at the same time improve trade ties between the two countries, according to a statement issued by the Indian embassy in Jakarta. The event in Medan was inaugurated by Governor of North Sumatra, Gatot Pujonugroho, who sought more investment by Indian companies in palm oil plantation and infrastructure. India's Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh said that, though bilateral trade was booming in recent years, it was time to move over to the next frontier by increasing and diversifying cross investments. Ambassador Singh, while mentioning that high-level Indian business delegations would be visiting Indonesia, also requested the Indonesian government to organize visits by similar business delegations from Indonesia to India. Panel discussions were held on the subject of doing business in India and Sumatra and enhancing business contacts between the two sides. The second event in Jakarta July 18 was inaugurated by H.S. Dillon, Indonesia's presidential special envoy on poverty alleviation. Panel discussions were held on the role of the Indian diaspora in Indonesian economy and strengthening of economic relations between India and Indonesia. While mentioning about the historical ties between India and Indonesia, Dillon recalled how India was the first country to recognize Indonesia as a free nation and the pivotal roles played by India's first prime minster Jawaharlal Nehru and Indonesia's first president Sukarno in the 1955 Bandung Conference, the historic meeting between newly independent Asian and African nations.

Cancer forces Indian family in UAE into dire straits

Dubai:An Indian family in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is desperately looking for funds for the treatment of a young man suffering from a rare form of cancer. Farhan Hussain, 24, is suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, and is admitted to the Dubai Hospital where he has run up medical bills totaling 140,000 dirhams ($38,115). His father, Abrar Hussain Sheikh, a 58-year-old retired bus driver, is doing odd jobs as a mechanic to make ends meet for the family, the Khaleej Times reported Thursday. With six mouths to feed and an elder son also without a job, Abrar sees his problems never ending. His wife also had to go to India for treatment due to a thyroid complication. However, Abrar is grateful to the hospital for taking care of Farhan. "The hospital has been very supportive in treating Farhan and the chemotherapy sessions will continue for a few more months, he said. "We hope to raise funds and pay the bills by the end of his treatment. Meanwhile, the family has started approaching charity organizations in the UAE and also hoping for help from individuals as well.

to hold on to their strongholds in the South and East of Afghanistan and also inside Pakistan territory," he said. "This happened primarily because along the way sometime in 2003/4 the US had lost focus due to its campaigns elsewhere and the terror outfits had gained the breathing space to regroup and resurrect," Rajnath Singh said. "The result was further fleecing of American dollars by Pakistan, further dependence of America on that country and further rise in the activities of terror networks," he said. Asking Pakistan to "act responsibly to ensure a smooth transition in Afghanistan", Rajnath Singh said, "Unless the fundamental problem of safe havens of these groups and their leadership in Pakistan is addressed, the Taliban menace cannot be eradicated." Expressing BJP's "cautious optimism keeping in view the track record of successive regimes in Pakistan," he said the party expected the new Pakistan leadership to show courage and determination to rein in radical elements within the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and the Pakistan Army from interfering in the internal affairs of Afghanistan after the NATO Forces' withdraw. "Pakistan must realize that the radical Taliban have caused enormous damage to not only the NATO Forces and the democratic leadership in Afghanistan, but also the Baluchs and many others in Pakistan too," Rajnath Singh said. He regretted "that once again an attempt is being made to makebelieve that the real cause of the Afghan conflict is India-Pakistan rivalry there." The BJP chief said the US has to make its own decisions regarding the final scope and time-table of withdrawal from Afghanistan, but its decision has implications for the region in terms of the combat against extremism. "As a major power in the region, India needs to be properly informed about any US initiatives in the region," he said.

Myanmar vows to strengthen ties with China

Yangon: Myanmar President U Thein Sein has assured China that his country will continue to pursue a friendly policy towards Beijing and advance ties between the two countries. Talking to visiting Fan Changlong, vice chairman of China's central military commission, in the capital, the president said Myanmar would continue to pursue a friendly policy toward Beijing and make unremitting efforts to push forward the Myanmar-China comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership. U Thein Sein said Fan's choice of Myanmar as his first foreign trip after taking up the post reflects the friendly ties between the two countries and the two armed forces. The president said enhancing solidarity and cooperation between Myanmar and China was in the fundamental interests of the two peoples and conducive to development and stability of the two countries and the whole region. Fan said China and Myanmar were good friends, neighbours and partners. Stating that bilateral military relations have also enjoyed momentum of development, Fan said China is willing to work with Myanmar to boost ties between the two countries and between their military forces.

More Afghan women join police

Kabul: Despite traditional barriers in wartorn Afghanistan, more and more women are now joining the police in a bid to secure their country's future. "I joined the Afghan National Police (ANP) to defend my country. I want to help my warweary people. They have been suffering from war and conflicts over the past three decades. I want to serve them by providing a peaceful environment," policewoman Karima Sabery told Xinhua. Women have shown increasing interest in joining the police in the western province of Herat. Officials in Herat said there was an increase in the number of female trainees enrolled in the provincial police training center. "Two years ago, only three women enrolled in the police training center. But up to now, 300 women have finished training and joined the police force in Herat and several dozens are receiving training here at the moment," said Colonel Mohammad Ibrahim, commander of the center. "It is the obligation of Afghans to defend their country. We must not rely on foreign forces to be responsible for our security. The foreigners do not need to provide security in Afghanistan anymore. Now we are strong. Our army and police are entirely ready. The foreigners can go now," Sabery said. Government forces took the leading role in security operations from US and NATO-led forces June 18. Afghan security forces will take over full responsibility for defending their own country when foreign combat troops leave by the end of 2014. Ibrahim said the policewomen underwent a six-week training to learn use of equipment, weaponry and self-defense as well as Afghan laws. Classes for female police are separate from males in the training centet situated 640 km west of the capital Kabul. "Serving the nation is not only the job of men. It is also our obligations to serve our country. We are determined to do so," said Zahra Mortazaie, another female trainee. Although women's rights have considerably improved in Afghanistan over the past decade, they still have a long way to go to achieve equality with men as the rate of literacy among women remains much lower than men. "The policewomen are given privileges, they are not on duty overnight, do not take part in police operations except inspection and detention of women suspects. Other privileges are that policewomen can select which section in the police force they want to serve in and, they are never deployed to police activities outside their duty stations," Ibrahim said. However, policewoman in the predominantly traditional Afghan society are still facing threats. Militants shot dead a policewoman Farmina while she was travelling with her husband and children July 21 in Mohmad Dara district of eastern Nangarhar province.

Don't support Nepal government on polls: opposition

Kathmandu: Nepal's 33 opposition parties led by the CPN-Maoist urged the international community not to support the Nov 19 government's bid to hold the second constituent assembly election. The 33 parties criticized the increasing foreign intervention in the internal affairs of Nepal such as constitution drafting process, election and other issues. "Some foreign missions have saddened the Nepali community by supporting the election process because the decision to go for election was taken by only four major parties, not all the parties in Nepal," they said. The four parties -- UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) -March 13 agreed to go for the election but 33 parties led by CPN-Maoist are against it. "I would like to reassure the people of India that Bhutan is fully cognizant of India's sensibilities and interests, and will not in any way undermine them," Tobgay was quoted as saying in a media report in response to a question on Delhi's reported reservations on last year's meeting between Thinley and then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Rio. As regards ties with Bejing, Tobgay remarked, "Our relations with China will align with the 1998 agreement to "Maintain Peace and Tranquillity on the Bhutan-China Border Areas". He added, "Bhutan's foreign policy follows the principle of fostering peace and goodwill with all nations, while being mindful of our own geopolitical realities." Tobgay said his People's Democratic Party, which humbled Thinley's Druk Phuensum Tshogpa in the July 13 election, had "reservations" on the rapid expansion of diplomatic relations by his predecessor. "It was a policy initiative of the previous government on which we expressed some reservations. We believe in focusing our time and energy on deepening and strengthening relations with our existing friends and development partners." Between 2008 and 2013, Bhutan under Thinley saw its diplomatic ties extend from 21 to 53 nations, which many in Delhi and Thimphu claimed, led to a trust-deficit between the two neighbours. Tobgay said he would follow in the footsteps of "our farsighted kings and eminent leaders in India", who built excellent relations based on shared interests, trust and goodwill. "I wish to make a humble contribution in seeing our relations emerge even stronger in the years ahead. I see the need for more interaction and dialogue at all levels official, business and people-to-people - so that we can develop even more closer and meaningful ties," he added.

China bans new govt buildings in frugality drive

Bulgaria: Police end parliament siege

Bulgaria: Bulgarian police broke up a blockade of parliament and escorted out more than 100 lawmakers and ministers who had been trapped inside the besieged building for more than eight hours by anti-government protesters seeking to oust the left-leaning government. Police in riot gear pushed away the protesters and formed a corridor to allow those trapped since Tuesday out of the building. Anti-government protests in Bulgaria's capital have been going on for 40 days, and escalated on Tuesday evening as several hundred demonstrators trapped 109 people - including three ministers, some 30 lawmakers and their staff - inside Parliament. Police had tried to escort the officials out by bus on Tuesday, but protesters blocked the vehicle hurling stones at it. Seven protesters and two police officers were treated in hospital for head wounds. The Socialist-backed government took office after early elections in May, following the resig-

He also called on the police to help keep the protest peaceful.

World's second oldest woman dead at 115 Afghan, Myanmar women

London/Mumbai: The world's second oldest living woman and the oldest in Britain, Sant Kaur Bajwa, died in West London aged 115 years and 199 days last Friday, an official statement released by her family said Tuesday. She was born Jan. 1, 1898 in Monde ke Mazeera village, Sialkote, Punjab, now in Pakistan. Her birth came before the world learnt about awesome inventions like the aircraft or radio transmission or the discovery of Penicillin which helped save millions of lives globally. Bajwa's last rites were performed in a private ceremony organized by her large family in London Tuesday afternoon. During her life spanning three centuries, Sant Kaur Bajwa witnessed history in the form of two World Wars, the industrial and technical revolutions, outlived six British monarchs and 27 prime ministers. Her life was a saga of struggle right from the early days when she lost both her parents at a tender age. She was raised by an older sister. She was married off at the age of 16 to farmer Munsha Singh in 1914 and gave birth to four children. Disaster again befell when she became a widow just six years after her marriage. However, undeterred by the tragedies, Bajwa decided to give Barely six years later, Surjit was diagnosed with kidney failure and died. For Bajwa, at the age of 74, it was another herculean determination on her part to raise four minor children (her grandchildren) left behind by Surjit, including a set of twins only six years old - Jim and Bob. After overcoming so many personal tragedies and challenges, years later, when she turned a healthy hundred in 1998, Bajwa was a little amused to see the world worried about issues like a new millennium and the Y2K threats! Jim and Bob fondly describe her as a formidable woman, who suffered more than her fair share of tragedies during her lifetime. "Through her life, it was her resolute belief in Sikhism and God that encouraged her will to live. She was a religious activist visiting a gurdwara daily and chanting 'Waheguru' for her own tranquility," said Jim in a statement. "It was her inner strength and resolve that carried her forward. She fought and stood tall as the matriarch of the family. She will be sorely missed and we will never forget her flamboyant yet modest personality," Bob said. Bajwa who died of natural agerelated factors, leaves behind her 12 grandchildren and 28 greatgrandchildren who treated her funeral as "a celebration and reflection of her incredible life."

her children a fair chance in life despite her struggles against society as a widow who was treated as an outcast in those days. After India's Independence in 1947, she migrated to Shukarpur in Indian Punjab, but during that traumatic journey, lost one of her children. Bajwa somehow managed to reach Indian Punjab with sons Iqbal and Avtar and daughter Surjit and started life afresh after the Indian government provided widows with sewing machines. She learnt to stitch and sell clothes and with financial support from a brother, managed to educate her three children. In 1966, she migrated to Southall in London to live with daughter Surjit and her son-in-law Ajit Singh Rai.

Manila: Afghanistan's first woman governor and a Myanmar civil society organizer, who both helped families displaced by conflict in their home nations, are among five winners of Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize this year. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation singled out Afghanistan's Habiba Sarabi, a 57-year-old doctor, for her "bold exercise of leadership to build up a functioning provincial government against great odds." Sarabi, currently the only Afghan woman in such a role, also devoted her energy to helping Afghans in refugee camps, providing medical care and supervising literacy courses secretly in a Taliban-ruled state in the late 1990s.

"I'm not a warlord. I'm just a modern woman," said Sarabi, the governor of Bamyan province since 2005, who has pushed for education and empowerment of women in a society scarred by widespread discrimination against women and minorities. The Foundation also recognized Lahpai Seng Raw from Myanmar, for her "quietly inspiring and inclusive leadership in the midst of deep ethnic divides and prolonged armed conflicts." The 64-year-old widow, founder of the largest civil society group in the military-ruled country, did relief work among displaced people besides setting up schools and clinics. She was once detained on suspicion of being in contact with a brother who is with rebel forces in Myanmar.

US probes steel pipe imports from India

Washington: The US Commerce Department launched one of its biggest trade investigations in years into charges that manufacturers in India, South Korea and seven other countries are selling steel pipe used by oil and natural gas producers at unfairly low prices in the United States. Imports of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) from the nine countries totaled nearly $1.8 billion in 2012, more than double their total in 2010, as rising US oil and natural gas production have increased demand for the pipe. In 2010, the United States slapped duties on imports of OCTG from China after they hit about $2.8 billion in 2008. That created an opening for the other foreign suppliers. The latest case targets South Korea, which

on Thailand and 111 percent on Vietnam to offset what they say is below market pricing, and lesser but still hefty duties on the other five countries. For two countries, Turkey and India, US producers are seeking additional countervailing duties to offset alledged government subsidies.

RBI announces more steps to curb rupee slide

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced more steps to curb slide in the value of the rupee, that has lost almost 10 percent of its value in the past two months. The RBI announced measures to further tighten liquidity in the banking system that will help stabilise the falling rupee. Over the last two months, the Reserve Bank of India has undertaken several measures to contain the volatility in the foreign exchange market. Among them, some measures intended to check excessive speculation adding to undue volatility in market conditions, the RBI said. These measures have had a restraining effect on volatility with a concomitant stabilising effect on the exchange rate, it said. The RBI said that based on a review of its earlier measures, and an assessment of the liquidity and overall market conditions going forward, it has been decided to modify the liquidity tightening measures.

First Indian Badminton League sparks furore

New Delhi: The Indian Badminton League (IBL) organisers Wednesday defended their decision to slash the base price of two of the six Icon Players, Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta, who were livid that their base prices were halved at the players' auction. Jwala and Ashwini told the media they were "disappointed, disgusted and hurt" when their $50,000 base tags were reduced to $25,000 as they went unsold at the closed bidding Sunday. After the cut, Jwala was sold to Delhi Smashers for $31,000 while Ashwini was given to Pune Pistons for $25,000 in the open auction Monday. The organisers, however, announced they would compensate the two by paying Jwala $19,000 and Ashwini $25,000, so that they at least get their contractual base price. "I do not understand what the fuss is all about. We have been fair to them (Ashwini and Jwala) despite the fact that they went unsold in the closed auction. We have ensured they got their base price and also their icon status, so would be sorted out soon. India's top shuttler and Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal was sold to Hyderabad Hostshots for a whopping $120,000 while World No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia got the highest bid of $135,000 from Mumbai Masters. World No.13 Parupalli Kashyap ($75,000) and P.V. Sindhu ($80,000) were sold respectively to Banga Beats and Lucknow Warriors. The league kicks off on August 14 with a tie between Delhi Smashers and Pune Pistons. Each franchise will host a two-day leg with a total of 90 matches. The top four franchises will clash in the semifinals and the winners will meet in the final Aug 31 in Mumbai.

India stroll to 6-wicket win over Zimbabwe

Harare: Skipper Virat Kohli struck a sublime century and debutant Ambati Rayudu hit an unbeaten fifty to guide India to a convincing sixwicket win over Zimbabwe in the first of the five-match ODI series at the Harare Sports Club. India, set a target of 229, made 230 for four with 31 balls to spare after Virat Kohli struck 115, his 15th ODI century, and Rayudu remained unbeaten on 63. Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Match. It was a clinical performance by the second string India side - with some of the stars being rested for the series - after Kohli opted to field. Zimbabwe's innings was held together by the Sialkot-born Sikandar Raza, who made a watchful 82 to guide the home team to 228 for seven in 50 overs. Elton Chingumbura came up with a quick-fire unbeaten 43 off 34 balls. Comeback man leggie Amit Mishra was the most successful Indian bowler, bagging three for 43. It wasn't a stiff target to chase, but India lost in-form openers Shikhar Dhawan (17) and Rohit Sharma (20) inside 13 overs with 57 runs on the board. Dhawan started off in his typical flamboyant style but fell while attempting a hook off Kyle Jarvis. Rohit also departed soon, edging a wide delivery through to the keeper off Chingumbura. Khohli then took the center stage and stitched a 159-run stand for the third wicket that put India on the threshold of a win. The Zimbabwe bowlers hardly posed any threat, though the ball was initially swinging a bit. Kohli was in good touch right f r o m t h e start

and took 57 balls for his 50. His 108 came up in 113 balls and was studded with 13 boundaries and a six. Kohli fell while trying to hit out Propser Utseya, only to find Vusi Sibanda at long-on. Suresh Raina lasted two balls and failed to open his account before becoming Utseya's second victim in the same over. Rayudu, who made his international debut after 10 years of his first A tour, impressed with his stroke play. He struck four fours in his 84-ball innings and took the team home safely with Dinesh Karthik, who was not out on eight.

'780 languages spoken in India, 250 died out in last 50 years'

Kolkata: While people in India presently speak in 780 different languages, the country has lost nearly 250 languages in the last 50 years, an expert said here Tuesday. The People's Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) has completed a comprehensive survey of the country and would publish its reports in 50 volumes in September. This is the first linguistic survey carried out in the country after Irish linguistic scholar George Abraham Grierson conducted the Linguistic Survey of India from 1898 to 1928. "Currently as many as 780 different languages are spoken and 86 different scripts are used in the country. While it surely is a fact to celebrate the diversity of the country, the sad part is we have lost nearly 250 languages in the last 50 years or so," PLSI chairperson G.N. Devy said. The PLSI - a public consultation and appraisal forum - collaborated with 85 institutions and universities in the country to conduct the research which was completed in four years with the help of over 3,000 experts. "While the actual survey - the first such exercise undertaken in independent India - took four years, it took 17 years of preparatory work, that too without any governmental assistance," said Devy. The reports will carry vari-

Create your own personal brand, climb up career ladder

London: Do you find it hard to get a foothold on your chosen career ladder? Fret not. Get that by creating a personal brand, says Ann Pickering, HR director for Telefnica UK. A personal brand seems like a strange concept, but its actually incredibly important. It affects how people perceive you professionally, and can help you make that all important first impression - formed within just seven seconds of meeting, reports femalefirst.co.uk. A research has shown that it can take as many as 20 interactions to change someones first opinion of you, so its vital that you make every second count. A strong personal brand can also give you greater confidence and open up more opportunities at work. Here are some tips by Pickering on how to create your own personal brand: 1. Identify what makes up your own personal brand. Assess everything from style, body language and tone of voice, to how you communicate on email or by phone. They may seem worlds apart, but what is the one thing that successful women like Clare Balding, Victoria Beckham or Deborah Meaden all have in common? All three have strong personal identities and have worked hard to create them. Even the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher, wasnt afraid to seek extra help to refine her brand, famously employing a vocal coach to lower the pitch of her voice and subsequently progressing from Cabinet member to Prime Minister. 2. Decide exactly what it is you want people to know about you. A good place to start is to think about why someone would want you in their team. Ask yourself key questions including - What are my values? What motivates me? What are my key skills, strengths and achievements? What can I bring to a team? 3. Concentrate on your key strengths. Once you have identified these, make the most of them by seeking out opportunities to demonstrate your skills, whether it means putting yourself forward for a specific role on a project, or working with someone who brings out your strengths. 4. Focus on the things that make you different - what makes you, you? Concentrate on the positives on both personal as well as professional level. Consider the way you react in everyday situations, whether its the way you manage people, how you deal with stressful situations, your creativity, or the way you think and process information. Write your answers down so you have a clearly defined set of objectives. 5. Critique it. Look back at what youve written and be ruthless. Remove any irrelevant or unnecessary detail and make sure that youre using simple, impactful language, no jargon. Once youre happy, seek feedback from others. Ask friends or family, or if youre comfortable, other colleagues. Its important to ask people who will be able to give you honest feedback. 6. Put it into action. Once you have identified what makes up your brand identity, you need to put it into practice. Think about specific projects and meetings that you have coming up and what you want people to remember about you. Simple steps such as giving yourself enough time to prepare can ensure that you come across in the right way. 7. Take it online. A recent Telefnica survey of 18-30 year olds found that young men are significantly more likely to identify technology as holding the key to future success than young women. This is a worrying trend. More women need to realize the opportunities that digital revolution can bring, such as using social media for networking and building a network of influence. Make sure that you use technology to your advantage. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date, join groups, participate in discussions and ensure that the brand you project online matches up with your brand off line.

ous information about all the languages spoken in the country. "From their historical and geographical details, to their origin and grammar as well as literature and other artistic and cultural works including folk songs would be available in the published work," said Devy. Talking about West Bengal, Devy said, the state was the richest in the country in terms of number of scripts used nine. Devy, though, said that of the 38 languages in Bengal, about 10 were endangered and needed urgent attention for their survival. Twenty two of the 780 languages are scheduled Indian languages. Of them, 122 have been declared by the census as spoken by a population exceeding 10,000 and the rest are spoken by less than 10,000 people. Refusing to quantify the number of "endangered languages", Devy called for governmental assistance to ensure survival of all the languages.

Ghoomar in top 10 list of world's most 30 mn girls in danger of amazing local dances genital mutilation: UN
Jaipur: Ghoomar, a folk dance of Rajasthan, has found its way into the list of world's most amazing local dances after an international travel website ranked it fourth on the list. According to website www.cheapflights.com, the folk dance is not only a display of rhythmic talent, but "its graceful performance in conjunction with twirling of colorful and long-flowing skirts also elevates its aesthetic appeal". The website has ranked Hawaii's Hula dance at No. 1, while Japan's Bon Odori dance is at No. 2. Ireland's Irish Stepdance has secured the third place among most amazing local dances. In recent times, Ghoomar was popularized by music company Veena, based in Jaipur. "We are really happy that Ghoomar has been ranked as one of the top dances. We at Veena came United Nations: As many as 30 million girls around the globe still face the risk of genital mutilation in the next decade, the Unicef said following a study of 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East. A total of 125 million girls and women alive today have been subjected to female genital mutilation, Xinhua cited the UN report as saying. The practice, which involves cutting away part or all of a girl's external genitalia, has been recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. Support for the practice, which causes severe pain and brings no short or long-term health benefit, has been in decline, the report noted. It also found that a large number of boys and men are also against the practice in some countries where genital mutilation persists. However, lack of open discussion of the sensitive issue has left millions of girls at the risk of being cut in future. "What is clear from this report is that legislation alone is not enough," said Unicef Deputy Executive Director Geeta Rao Gupta. "The challenge now is to let girls and women, boys and men speak out loudly and clearly and announce they want this harmful practice abandoned." The report said such practices remain almost universal in Somalia, Guinea, Djibouti and Egypt, with over 90 percent of women and girls aged 15-49 being cut. In countries such as Chad, Gambia, Mali, Senegal, Sudan, or Yemen, there has been no noticeable decline. Meanwhile, the practice has declined in Kenya, Tanzania, Benin, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, and the Central African Republic, the report added

Fashion has 'wear-by' date

London: Women love trying new trends, but a research suggests that certain outfits should be avoided by women of certain age groups as fashion comes with a wear-by date. Women should ditch belly-baring crop tops by the age of 34, and avoid showing off midriffs in bikinis as soon as they reach 40, reveals the study conducted by All-Bran Five Day Challenge, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Miniskirts, hot pants and belly button piercings should also be avoided after mid-thirties. And it's not just crop tops and bikinis that the over-30s need to avoid, with the miniskirt being labeled as "too old" for those aged 37 or above, even hot pants should be ditched at 35. Ruth Gresty, spokeswoman for the All-Bran Five Day Challenge, said: "People may say, 'If you've got it, flaunt it,' but it seems that this isn't always the case for some of our wardrobe staples." "It's alarming that the crop top or bikini is causing such widespread 'midriff mayhem', and women actually believe it should come with some kind of a wear-by date. Ultimately, it should come down to how confident you feel about your stomach and body - if you have worked hard to maintain a flat tum, you should be able to show it off." "But for some women, a flat, less bloated tummy can prove elusive no matter how many stomach crunches they do and mean they aren't comfortable in revealing clothes as they get older. However, the secret can be as simple as making a few small dietary changes like eating a fiber rich breakfast cereal every day, which is proven to ease bloating and that swollen tum look," Gresty added. The study conducted on 2,000 women also found that leggings should be avoided after one reaches 37 years of age and stilettos are a complete no-no if you are 41plus. Belly button piercings should be removed by the time you turn 35, while long hair should be given a chop at 42 for a shorter, more "mature" look. As many as 27 percent believed that ladies should stop shopping in younger clothes stores like Topshop and Miss Selfridge once they reach their early forties. Over a fifth of those polled said they would put age aside and show off their body if they had a flatter or less bloated looking tummy like celebrities, but admitted they found it incredibly hard to achieve. It also emerged that it's not just women who should put limits on their wardrobe, as the results also showed that men should quit their beloved football shirts at the age of 25. Researchers also found that women are taking the lead from

celebrities, with 67 percent of those surveyed said that famous females are making it more acceptable for women to wear belly-bearing clothes after a certain age. "Thankfully, it seems like the

celebs have got it sussed when it comes to understanding the relationship between feeling good on the inside and looking great and are not afraid to show off their midriffs - whatever their age," Gresty added.

Great tips for preparing for college entrance exams

rom brushing up on interview skills to honing the perfect essay, the college admissions process seems to become more complicated every year. While students in the past may have prepared for one standardized admissions test, now some experts now advise taking both the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Test (ACT). The ACT may have once played second fiddle to the SAT. But the test is gaining momentum and popularity with college admissions officers, says Chris Arp, a tutor at Veritas Tutors and Test Prep and author of Up Your Score ACT, a new test-prep study guide. While the SAT was designed to judge a students ability to reason, the ACT was designed to determine a students knowledge of the basic high school curriculum. Arp offers these tips to test-takers:

Breakfast is essential no matter your age

veryone knows it's important to make sure children have breakfast before school, but college students and busy parents also need a dose of morning nutrition. Breakfast, which refers to breaking the fast, is the first meal of the day, usually consumed when the body has gone about eight to 10 hours without food. Eating breakfast is often associated with a higher nutrient intake and being a smart way to start the day. When it comes to college students and parents, far too many admit to being a breakfast skipper. Thirty-one million adults skip breakfast, according to a recent National Eating Trends survey. And millennials, aged 18-34, are the largest population of breakfast skippers. Today, with schedules busier than ever, its easy to simply focus on getting the day started. Whether youre in college or chasing after school-age kids, its easy to forgo breakfast to stay onschedule, says Betsy Frost, Manager at General Mills. The tradeoff hits mid-morning with what people are calling the hangries -- the feeling of being hungry and angry or irritable, she adds. With this in mind, Frost and her colleagues at General Mills recently unveiled BFAST, a new breakfast shake containing the nutrition of a bowl of cereal and milk. It has eight grams of protein, eight grams of whole grain (48 grams recommended daily) and three grams of

Take a practice test of both the SAT and the ACT, timed, in a setting that allows you to concentrate for three-plus hours. If you score much higher on one, then take that test. If the scores are similar, Arp says to consider this: Which test made you want to pull out a smaller percentage of your hair? Make a manageable schedule, breaking preparation into chunks. But remember, the actual test is long, so building endurance is crucial. Ramp up your practice sessions until you can take the whole test in one sitting.

Take several practice tests at home and learn from both your successes and mistakes. Remember, you can take the ACT up to 12 times if you need to. And unlike the SAT, you can choose which scores are sent to colleges. On the reading section of college entrance exams, check your outside knowledge at the door. You are being tested on what a passage says, not on what you already know. Picking your battles can help you make the most of your limited time. For example, in the case of the ACTs Science Reasoning Test, glancing at a passage before you dive into it can help you decide whether you want to spend time on it now or later. Both the SAT and ACT are accepted by every college in America. So if youre stressed out by the SAT, do yourself a favor and consider taking a different route. air, so it's a good idea to keep your silver in airtight zip lock plastic bags or an airtight container when not in use. This will help to slow the tarnishing process, he added. While swimming, remove your silver jewelry. Take a professional jewelry polishing cloth to clean silver. The cloth is treated with cleaning chemicals and not only will the cloth last a long time, it will give you an amazing shine. Rub gently in a lengthwise motion and it will also make the stones shine, Zaveri said. Known for its intense luster, platinum doesnt get tarnished, but keeping it clean is advised. After cleaning, it should be dried and polished with a soft cloth," Chandresh Zaveri, director of Zaveri & Co in New Delhi, said. The simple cleansing method will make your gold pieces shine again, but the ones with gemstones need extra care. "Dont submerge the piece into a bowl of water and soap. Use a clean,

Use a separate, slightly damp cloth that hasn't been dipped in soap water to rinse the jewelry, said Sanjay Jagwani, director of Notandas & Sons Jewelers. The pieces should be stored in small individual pouches or boxes wrapped in tissue paper individually. Zaveri also said that ensure they dont get tangled. WHO accused of promoting 'deadly' vaccine

Bangalore: A leading journal of medical ethics has charged WHO with promoting the Pentavalent vaccine in countries, including India, though it is known to have caused adverse reactions and deaths in children. In a hard-hitting editorial, the latest issue of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics (IJME) has accused the WHO of promoting the vaccine "by stating falsely that no adverse event following immunization (AEFI) has ever been reported with the vaccine". The Pentavalent vaccine combines the Diphtheria, Pertusis, Tetanus or DPT vaccine - used in national immunization programs with Hepatitis-B and H influenzab or Hib vaccine. This combination vaccine is not licensed for use by the US Food and Drug Administration nor is it used in other developed countries, the editorial says. But WHO recommends it in developing countries. The IJME editorial by Jacob Puliyel, head of pediatrics at St. Stephen's Hospital in New Delhi, is based on his investigation into the deaths of children in Bhutan, Sri Lanka, India and Vietnam following the use of Pentavalent vaccine. It says on May 4, Vietnam's health ministry suspended Quinvaxem - the Pentavalent combination used in that country after 12 deaths and nine non-fatal serious adverse events. According to local news reports, all the babies who died were in good health prior to vaccination. WHO, which investigated the incident, said the deaths were not vaccine-related and asserted that "Quinvaxem was prequalified by

Menthol cigarettes pose greater health risk

Washington: Menthol or mint-flavored cigarettes pose a greater health risk than non-menthol ones, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a scientific review. "While there is little evidence to suggest that menthol cigarettes are more or less toxic or contribute to more disease risk to the user than non-menthol cigarettes, adequate data suggest that menthol use is likely associated with increased smoking initiation by youth and young adults," Xinhua quoted the FDA as saying. Further, menthol in cigarettes is likely associated with greater addiction. Menthol smokers show greater signs of nicotine dependence and are less likely to successfully quit smoking, it said. According to the FDA, more than 400,000 deaths per year in the US are caused by tobacco use. About 30 percent of all adult smokers and more than 40 percent of all youth smokers in the country report smoking menthol cigarettes. "Menthol cigarettes raise critical public health questions," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement.

WHO and no fatal adverse event following immunization has ever been associated with this vaccine". The editorial points out that WHO had not disputed the death of 12 children soon after immunization and "therefore it is patently wrong and misleading for it to conclude that no fatal AEFI have ever been associated with the vaccine". Bhutan stopped the program following four unexplained deaths soon after immunization but was later persuaded to restart it by WHO. The deaths in Sri Lanka also resulted in the suspension of the immunisation drive there. n India, according to IJME, 21 children have so far died in a limited experiment with the vaccine introduced in 2011 in the immunization program in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. India had announced plans to roll out the vaccine to other states after monitoring its impact in these two states. "The common factor has been that the children had received the Pentavalent vaccine and in most of them, this was followed by high fever, excessive crying and in some, there were convulsions before the child died," the editori-

"The FDA is committed to a science-based approach that addresses the public health issues raised by menthol cigarettes, and public input will help us make more informed decisions about how best to tackle this important issue moving forward." The agency said a notice will be available for public comment for 60 days and that it will consider all comments, data, research, and other information submitted to the docket to determine what, if any, regulatory action with respect to menthol in cigarettes is appropriate.

Plain cigarette packs could help people quit smoking: Study

Sydney: A new study shows that cigarettes packaged in a plain manner are less appealing to smokers and get them thinking about the urgency to quit smoking. The study published in the online journal BMJ Open was based on interviews of 536 smokers in the Australian state of Victoria during November 2012 when plain packs were already al said. The journal has also questioned the very rationale for introducing Hib vaccination in India, where the incidence of Hib disease is very low. available in the run-up to and immediately after implementation of the legislation requiring all tobacco sold at retail outlets to be contained in plain packs. The results indicated that perception of exaggerated tobacco harm or the frequency with which smokers thought about the damage cigarettes might be doing to them differed little between the two groups. But plain pack smokers were 51 percent more likely to back the plain pack policy than were brand pack smokers. Compared with smokers still using brand packs, the plain pack smokers were 66 percent more likely to think their cigarettes were poorer quality than a year ago. And they were 70 percent more likely to say they found them less satisfying.

146 Gurgaon students taken ill after iron dose

Gurgaon: The number of Gurgaon government school students taken ill after eating iron supplement tablets the day before rose to 146 Tuesday, officials said. Most of the students who were administered the iron tablets complained of vomiting, diarrhoea, headache and stomach pain. At least 26 students, who were given iron tablets Monday, were admitted to civil hospital here. Another 30 students, from different parts of the district, were treated at Bhondsi primary health centre, said a doctor. "As many as 146 student with different illnesses were treated in primary health centers and community health centers," an official said. Parents of some of the affected children admitted them to private hospitals. A large number of students from different parts of the district Tuesday missed their classes. Gurgaon Chief Medical Officer Pushpa Bishnoi said: "Students reported giddiness after consuming iron tablets but there was nothing to worry." "This program is for the betterment of the health of children and will continue," said Bishnoi. Bishnoi said it was medically accepted that people taking iron tablets on an empty stomach may suffer from giddiness or vomiting sensation. The WIFS program will cover about 16 lakh students studying in government schools of the state. In Gurgaon, more than one lakh students would be given one tablet every week for more than six months.

President turns to Hollywood celebs to sell Obamacare

Washington: President Barack Obama is turning to Hollywood stars to sell his signature health care laws' insurance exchanges that open on Oct 1 to younger Americans. Obama Monday extolled the benefits his health care law, nicknamed Obamacare, offers young people, whose participation in the exchanges is seen as essential for their long-term viability, at a meeting with stars at the White House Monday. The group included Indian-American actor Kal Penn, known for starring in the popular "Harold and Kumar" film series as well as the hit TV show "House" singer Jennifer Hudson and actor Amy Poehler. "The President stopped by the meeting to engage artists who expressed an interest in helping to educate the public about the benefits of the health law," a White House official was cited as saying by CNN. "The reach of these national stars spreads beyond the Beltway to fans of their television shows, movies, and music - and the power of these artists to speak through social media is especially critical." The meeting, which was led by Obama's senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, also included representatives for Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, YouTube Comedy, Funny or Die and the organizations that put

on the annual Grammy and Latin Grammy awards. "President Obama underscored that the efforts of these artists will be especially helpful since young uninsured Americans (ages 18-35) are key enrollment targets for the new marketplaces," the official said. Persuading young Americans to enrol on Obamacare's exchanges is considered a key challenge for the law's backers - without enough healthy people enrolled, premium costs for those who do participate will rise. The White House has said that 2.7 million young and healthy adults must enrol on the exchanges in order for premium costs to remain low for older Americans who take advantage of the new system, according to CNN.

Ten reasons why the British royal family has Indian blood
he British royal family has Indian blood, a researcher discovered last week. One of their direct descendants was from Gujarat, a DNA expert at the University of Edinburgh found. But of course! With their big noses and huge number of family members, it now seems obvious that the British royal family has upper-class Indian blood. How could we have missed the clues?

finances come from palatial property holdings. There's more. 6) None of them have real jobs. 7) Despite living in the 21st century, they still think that living in a huge house with a massive number of servants is okay. 8) The young ones are terrible at studying, but still get into fancy private schools. 9) The men wear fancier clothes than the women. 10) There are endless disputes over tradition between old and young. Talking of which, more details are emerging about the court ruling in China that children must visit parents. If your folks are 60 or more, judges think you should visit them every eight weeks.

With their big noses and huge number of family members, it now seems obvious that the British royal family has upper-class Indian blood. How could we have missed the clues?
This is a lot to ask in a country where buying a ticket to ride involves days of queuing, bribery, corruption and possibly a murder or two - and that's just to get on the school bus every morning. So I was not surprised to read in the newspapers that businesses have sprung up to do the visiting on people's behalf. I looked them up. One professional visitor on the Taobao website offered to visit your parents for 100 yuan ($16.50) an hour, plus "you have to tell us topics they like, so we can start a good chat". I guarantee the number one topic is going to be "what total, evil, useless deadbeats my children are". You'd have to agree to everything they said, despite the fact that you were being paid by the people they are criticizing. Where on earth would you find someone who would be enough of a slimeball to take such a job? Wait. They're all over the place. It would be much better to pay extra and hire someone with drama skills to pretend to BE the actual offspring. Of course, the hired hand would have to think on his or her feet. Mom: "You look different. Didn't you used to be a girl?" Fake son: "Er, yeah, but I felt like a change, you know how it is." Mom : "Anyway, I'll cook your favorite food, farmer pie made with minced cowlips and shredded farmhand underpants." Fake son: "Er, yum-yum! Can't wait."

1) Their weddings are massive and interminable. 2) Curry has been declared the national dish of Britain. 3) Their family life is like a Bollywood soap opera, parties alternating with melodrama. 4) I bet passionate greenie Prince Charles dances around trees when no one is looking. 5) The main family

Concluding part of the discourse 'Stay still for God'

Silence distractions to listen to God

By Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj
f we want to play a video game or a challenging game like chess, we find no trouble tuning out all distractions to concentrate on what we are doing. Millions of people read books and can do so in a crowded airport or train, at home with children running around the house, or even while the television is playing. When we want to concentrate on reading, we are able to train our mind to tune out all other noises and focus only on the words on a page. Millions of people go to the movies. A movie may last two or three hours. People have no trouble shutting out the rest of their worldly responsibilities, including their children at home with the babysitter, or even their Blackberry or text messages, during the movie, without any problems. Yet, how is it that when it comes to sitting still to concentrate within in meditation, we cannot concentrate for more than a few minutes? Staying silent for any reason begins with desire and passion. Whatever we want to do we can achieve. If we have a desire to improve our body, we learn how to silence any distractions to accom-

plish our goal. If we desire to improve our mind or entertain our mind, we have no trouble silencing any interruptions to achieve our desired outcome. Look at all the amazing tasks humans do when they have a desire and how they put in time to make their dreams a reality. For example, people have figured out how to put a human being on the moon. Who could imagine that someone walking on earth, pulled down by gravity, could rise out of the earths gravitational pull, travel through oxygen-less space, land on a moon, without any oxygen, walk on that lifeless surface, and come back alive. It is remarkable. Yet, someone had the dream to make it happen and then set in motion all the necessary steps for it to become a reality. If we can put a physical body on a moon, why cannot we take our spirit and return it to the spiritual realms from where it came? All it takes is the desire to do so and a will to follow the instructions to make it happen, and it will happen. Another example of making a dream into a reality is that of the astronauts who are able to leave the space shuttle to do a spacewalk safely and even make repairs or upgrades to the ship. Is that anything less than amazing? Some people are afraid to lean out their window on a second floor or higher lest they fall. Yet, astronauts venture out to space, where there is no oxygen, and face dangers such as the cord breaking, causing them to float off to their death in space. Yet, these people put their mind to doing these feats and achieved it.

If we ever watched the Olympics, we are awed by the tremendous feats that athletes train themselves to do with their physical bodies. We marvel at their ski jumps, hurdles, gymnastics routines, or amazing triple jumps while skating. We wonder how they can hurl their body into the air and do all those gyrations, seemingly defying laws of gravity. Yet, they set their mind to it and their body followed along. In marathon races people test

cine, we marvel at how doctors have created ways to transplant an organ such as the heart or do delicate brain surgery. For centuries no one could have dreamed these treatments possible, yet people had the idea to develop these methods, and they worked hard to make it reality. The mind is a great tool to use to achieve a goal. All the great inventions, innovations, and creations have come about due to the power of the mind. The question is, why

their stamina and endurance to run miles and miles. We marvel at how they do it. Yet, they had a goal and worked day after day to increase their ability to run. They not only trained their body, but they trained their mind to keep at the task until they achieved their goal. Some people can barely swim across a pool, yet there are people who train themselves to swim the English Channel. We wonder how it is possible. But someone had that desire and worked hard to make it happen. If we look at the field of medi-

cant we control our mind to sit still to concentrate within? For success in any field, we need a ruling passion and commitment. When we do not succeed at a task it is because we take it as a low priority. Then, we do not have the will to do it. We are focused on all the other aspects of life. Success requires us weeding out those time-wasters or distractions that keep us from achieving our goal. In this connection, there is a story from a novel that illustrates this point well. Five people were

being held in a prison camp during a war. They found there was only one way for them to escape. They had to escape in a hot air balloon. They were able to escape to an area where a hot air balloon was being kept and were able to lift off before the guards discovered them. As they sailed off, they discovered to their horror, that the wind was blowing them over the ocean. They drifted further and further away from land and were fearful of how long the hot air balloon would stay up. They drifted for many hours over the ocean waters and then discovered that the balloon was descending, getting closer to the waters surface. One of them said, "We are going to crash into the ocean unless we either heat the air in the balloon or get rid of some weight." Another said, "We have no way to heat the air in the balloon so we have to reduce the weight by throwing something overboard." They took stock of what they had with them. They decided to throw overboard their shoes, coats, and weapons which they had smuggled out with them when they escaped. As they threw these items into the ocean, they each took a sigh of relief as the balloon rose higher.
