THOUGHTS FROM BRAD

Kim and I are out of town today worshipping with a growing congregation in Massillon, Ohio. Please pray that God will use this time to refresh and renew us as we seek to observe how this church is reaching its community for Christ. We hope to see you next Sunday. I ran across this devotion the other day by Pastor Greg Laurie. I want to share it with you. I hope it means as much to you as it did me. Read Hebrews 8:1-2, 5. It is important to remember that heaven is a real place. Many times we think of heaven as some sort of translucent, spacey, endless church service. Some may think, I am not sure . . . . I don't know if I am going to like heaven and just sitting around on a cloud, strumming a harp, singing forever. I kind of like earth. But that is a misunderstanding about heaven. What do we like about earth anyway? We like the beauty. We like the joys. We like the love of family and friends and companionship. There are so many things that we enjoy on earth. God has given us these things; therefore, we don't have to feel bad about them. But here is what we need to know: Earth is not the original with heaven being a copy; heaven is the original, and earth is the copy. The temple built in Jerusalem was a copy of the real temple in heaven. Hebrews 8:5 tells us, "They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: 'Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.' " As C. S. Lewis wrote, "All the things that have ever deeply possessed your soul have been but hints of [heaven]tantalizing glimpses, promises never quite fulfilled, echoes that died away just as they caught your ear. . . ." The real thing is heaven. The things that we enjoy most on earth will be waiting for us in heaven, but in a perfected state. We will not miss out on anything. Heaven is the real place for real peace. In His Service, Brad Seevers

SUNDAY EVENINGS IN THE SANCTUARY: Tonight, July 28, the message is The Secret of Contentment (I Timothy 6:6-8). This will be my final message of the season. As I usually do, I will take a break in the month of August and return in September. The 6:00pm service continues in August with several special programs and speakers. I encourage your participation. I remind you that Communion is available at this service. WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDIES: We are in the midst of our summer break but we will return to these meetings after Labor Day. Reach Out on Campus Cookie Ministry

Its that time of year again new students will be moving in at Ohio University in Athens, and the students and staff of ROC are pleased to have the opportunity to serve others during this time. Over the last several years, they have handed out hundreds of cookies to hungry students and parents during the first few days before and after the start of classes. If you would like to bake cookies, please put 3-4 average-sized cookies in a zip lock bag and bring them to the church kitchen on Sunday, August 18th and we will make sure they get delivered to ROC.

Library Spotlight
Tessas Treasures by Gary Bower is a Mommy and Me book. When you find something that you care about very much, something that you never want to lose, and something so special that it can never be replaced then youve found a treasure. An ordinary shoe box contains only a hodgepodge of trinkets, but to little Tessa it is a treasure chest of prized possessions. With her friend Luke at her side, Tessas diverse collection of valuables grows daily. Soon, however, the contents of Tessas box lose their luster as she becomes aware of something of far greater worth. Ruth, by Lois T. Henderson, is an adult novel. There was strength in her gentleness, courage in her humility. Her devotion to Naomi and the God of her Israelites has come down through the ages as an inspiration to new generations, century after century. What was she like, this Moabite widow, this Ruth? Stop by the library and check out a good book. If you have any questions about the library, contact Delores Payne.

Core Values...
Values central to the life, mission and vision of Fifth Avenue Church of Christ are: Christ-Centered Worship
We make it a priority every Sunday to celebrate Jesus through our music. (Romans 11:36-12:1-2). We focus on Jesus through gracebased preaching and teaching & understand the Bible is our authority (2 Timothy 3:16).

Church Health and Biblical Balance

Church health becomes reality when God's people seek harmony & live consistently. We expect every member to protect the unity of Christ's Church. (Romans 12:16; 1 Peter 3:8)

Global Evangelism
We are constant to our founding call to worldwide evangelism, proclaiming to all that Jesus Christ is the Savior, Healer, and SoonComing King (Acts 20:27).

Fellowship and Ministry

After people begin their journey with Jesus, we will equip them to find a ministry based upon their strengths. We want everyone to serve in some capacity. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27) We also want His church to be the living evidence of His love and power to the world.

Discipleship
We do not want you to "get religion" here at Fifth Avenue Church of Christ in Lancaster. We are all about teaching you that Jesus seeks a daily relationship with Him through a life of obedience. In other words, we want to see the things you are taught actually change your lifestyle & your daily decisions.

How Can I Respond Today?

At FACC we look to the Bible for guidance on all issues. We believe that Gods Word is clear concerning what a person must do to become a Christian. Trust that Jesus can bring you to salvation. Turn (repent) from the sin in your life. Confess your desire to make Jesus the Lord of your life. Be baptized (immersed) in water for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy Spirit into your life. To make this life decision for Christ, we ask that you come forward during our commitment song at the conclusion of the Sunday message. Baptized believers are welcome to become members at FACC by coming forward on Sunday morning or by seeing our Senior Minister to discuss this further. We ask that you complete a series of Curious classes to help you better understand what you are committing to as a member.

Social Conscience
We place high value on the sanctity of human life, of Biblical marriage and morality, and we welcome ethnic diversity (Isaiah 56:7; Philippians 2:15-16).
