FMS2 UPGRADE (Release 1A)

This Training Presentation highlights the key functions and improvements of the FMS2 Honeywell Release1A upgrade. This will be fitted to new aircraft delivered from: August 2010 onwards (MSN 4425 : G-EZFZ) The Airbus fleet will be modified and the briefing notes to crew will state FMS Standard Release H2A installed on this aircraft The first part of this presentation deals with the more commonly used pages on the MCDU, in the order of a typical flight.

FMS2 UPGRADE (Release 1A)

Update: (Dec 2011)
Initial rollout of Release 1A was stopped as a problem was identified. A newer version H2A is now released from MSN 4717 (G-EZGK) and MSN 4721 (G-EZUI). Testing is now complete and rollout will be planned during autumn 2011. 1. The version H2A will remove the QRH OEB 17 (DUAL FM RESET UPON RADIAL FIX INFO ENTRY) and 31 (ERRONEOUS VERTICAL PROFILE DURING RNAV, LOC AND LOC B/C APPROCHES). However, the QRH cannot be amended as the same time as the aircraft, therefore OEB 17 and 31 will still be in the QRH until the next revision.

2. The planned automatic engagement of NAV during Go-Around will not be modified at the same time as Step 1A. note: this is only on MSN 4179 onwards see FCOM DSC-22-30-60 (1.22.30) 3. Gross Weight will not be displayed on the Secondary Display until after first engine start

INIT page A

INIT PAGE A is now accessible after engine start

Blue parameters can be altered in flight

IRS INIT page

If GPS is available, IRS alignment starts automatically as soon as the one IRS is selected to NAV no crew action is required to align the IRS. Line 1 is the Airport Reference Point (ARP). This may be changed if necessary to the gate position. (6R) aligns to the Lat/Long on Line 1. (this is not needed unless the position in Line 1 has been altered). New MCDU scratchpad message REF/GPS POS DIFF if Line 1 different to last stored GPS position.

IRS INIT page B

Line 1R entries are now :

rather than previously:

Field 6L changes from EXTRA / TIME to new field: this value defaults to: +

AIRWAYS page

To cope with provision for future ATC requirements, the FMS provides the capability to fly a Fixed Radius Transition (FRT) between waypoints. These are defined in the NAV Database and cannot be created or modified.

If an airway contains at least one FRT there is a new column titled FIXED TURN RADIUS AWY.
If further multiple airway segments contain FRTs then subsequent lines will indicate ditto symbols ( ).

PERF TAKEOFF page

The selected departure runway is now displayed in the page title.

MCDU Amber messages:

CHECK TAKE OFF DATA if crew change the takeoff runway. The previously entered values appear in blue next to the amber boxes. CONFIRM TO DATA (6R) is then required. V1/VR/V2 DISAGREE appears following take off speed consistency check (V1 V2 VR).

TO SPEED TOO LOW appears if values entered do not satisfy conditions for VMCG and VS1G.

FUEL PRED page

OLD
There are a number of changes to the presentation: 1) GW / CG moved from 3L to 5R 2) RTE / RSV% moved from 4L to 3L 3) EXTRA/TIME moved from 6L to 6R 4) FOB moved from 3R to 4R 5) Field CRZ TEMP / TROPO (4R) removed

NEW

6) New field MIN DEST FOB (6L) 7) New field ALTN/TIME (4L) 6R 8) New field ZFW/ZFWCG (3R)

FUEL PRED page

Before Takeoff: has a value (e.g. 5.0%) = +

After Take-off: is zeroed.

FUEL PRED page

If the MIN DEST FOB and/or the ALTN figures are amended: reflects new difference between: and .

The at the alternate (e.g. ) reflects the new difference between the at the destination and the value in the field.

If crew enter a below the If The +

that is value. is less than .

SELECTED NAVAIDS page

Provides the ability to DESELECT (5L) the selected RADIONAV aids. This inhibits the use of DME/DME or VOR/DME position calculation. (this feature mainly dedicated to RNP approach procedures where stipulated) An amber message: RADIONAV IS DESELECTED is displayed on the scratchpad when the aircraft is <80NM from the TOD or in the approach phase.

ARRIVAL page

Availability to select multiple approaches to the same runway (where available)

Refer to approach chart for approach identifier, e.g. ILS32L - A

ILS32L - B

PERF APPR page

Field 2R now BARO (was MDA)

Field 3R previously now RADIO (was DH)

PFD now displays BARO or RADIO (instead of MDA/DH)

The full runway name of the selected approach appears at the top of the ND.

MISCELLANEOUS PAGES

The second part of this presentation deals with the less commonly used MCDU pages.

STEP ALT page

ALT/WPT is now entered at lines: 1L, 2L, 3L etc. May be entered as an ALT only (computes OPT step point) or as an ALT/WPT. Note: WPT may be: WPT ident, PBD, PD or LAT/LONG

STEP ALT page

STEP NOW if optimum STEP is < 20nm.

ABOVE MAX if above maximum FL

IGNORED if STEP is < 50 from TOD.

OPT STEP INSERT (6R) if step is available

OFFSET page

<OFFSET prompt is available on a LAT REV selection. Enter the required distance and direction of offset in 1L (e.g. 5R) Enter the required initial offset angle to current WPT in 1R (e.g. 30) Check or insert the required START WPT from list on 3L to 5L. Check or insert the required END WPT from list on 3R to 6R.

FIX page

4 FIX INFO pages available. New RADIUS function. When inserted, the circumference of that radius will be displayed around that FIX on the ND. The FMS will calculate the point on the flight plan where the RADIUS, RADIAL or ABM WPT intercepts the flight path. For the radial function; the created WPT is defined as D(RADIUS)(FIX), e.g. NOTE: FMS UPGRADE (STEP 1A) CANCELS OEB No.17 (DUAL RESET UPON FIX INFO RADIAL ENTRY) - see next slide.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

ENHANCED LOC CAPTURE

Reduces likelihood of over-shooting the LOC whilst capturing at large intercept angles. FMS performs a pre-capture of the axis that enables a better final capture.

IMPROVED OPTIMUM ALTITUDE FUNCTION

The Optimum Flight Level (OPT FL) ensures a 5 minute minimum cruise time at a minimum cruise Fight Level of FL100. (previously 15 minutes & FL250)

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

KNOWN ISSUE REGARDING GW DISPLAY

There is a known issue common to all FMGCs fitted with Honeywell FMS2 software regarding the GW display on the INIT A page and on lower ECAM display.
The issue is that the GW value is displayed on SD when the engines are off and additionally, the GW is erroneous (higher than the expected ZFW + FOB + TAXI).

The correct behaviour is that the GW should be dashed on the SD prior to engine start (even if ZFW and BLOCK are defined).
Step 1A fixes this anomaly.

However, there is a known issue with Step 1A:
