1. A 2.5 m simple beam supports a triangular load ranging from 0 at left support to 10.2 kN/m at right support. Determine: a. Shear stress at the N.A. of the section b. Maximum transverse shear stress

2. A steel beam is loaded as shown. a. Determine the maximum bending moment due to the loads by drawing the shear and bending moment diagram. b. Determine the bending moment that the original beam cross section can carry given that the allowable normal stress in tension and compression for the material is 150 MPa. Is the original beam cross section adequate in supporting the loads shown? Original beam is made from steel. c. If the cross section is inadequate, identical 5 mm thick steel plates will be welded along the top and the bottom for the whole length of the beam. Determine the required width of the plates that will make the beam adequate. Assume that welding will ensure that flexural action will apply to the new cross section.

3. The compound shaft shown is attached to rigid supports. For the bronze segment AB the diameter is 75mm, allow=60 MPa, and G= 35 GPa. For the steel segment BC, the diameter is 50 mm, , allow = 80 MPa, and G=83 GPa. If a = 2m and b= 1.5 m, compute the maximum torque T that can be applied.

4. An upright solid circular shaft made from a material with G= 70 GPa is shown on the right. Knowing that the diameters of the segments are , and , determine: 50 N-m

+y A 40 mm 20 N-m B 60 mm mm

a. The torsion load (T) at gear C to make the shaft remain in equilibrium b. The maximum shearing stress in the shaft. c. The rotation of a section at B with respect to a section at D.

5. A brass ring of 160-mm outside diameter fits exactly inside a steel ring of 160 mm inside diameter (shown below) when the temperature of both rings is 5o C. Knowing that the temperature of the rings is then raised to 55o C, determine (a) the tensile stress in the steel ring, (b) the corresponding pressure exerted by the brass ring on the steel ring.

6. A spherical pressure vessel is being constructed from a certain alloy. a. By what fraction should the thickness of the vessel be with respect to its inner radius (i.e. t/ri) if the designer intends the vessel to hold an internal pressure equal to 20% of the allowable normal stress? b. Using your t/ri answer in part a, what is the factor by which we overestimate the normal stress calculation between the thin-wall assumption and mean radius calculation? (Hint: Draw the FBD of the pressure vessel) ri = inner radius rm = mean radius
