NASHVILLE, TN – Saturday, May 16,
2009 – A series of real estate auctions held
around Nashville today served to high-
light some very important trends in the
local marketplace. The three properties
are located over a wide geographic distri-
bution throughout the Metro Nashville
area and in three disparate neighborhoods
possessing very different demographics.

More than 40 registered bidders partici-
pated in the auctions that took place be-
tween 9:00 am and 1:00 pm on this rainy,
often stormy, Saturday. The solid turnout
for the auction despite the showers illus-
trates that investors realize there are good
bargains to be had and do not want to miss
their chance. Knowing that the properties
would definitely have new owners by the
end of the day strengthened the resolve of
many to brave the elements and take ad-
vantage of a unique opportunity. It is
worth noting that the successful buyers at
today’s auction do not see an excessive
amount of risk in their purchases.

Dressing Ingredients:
2/3 cup Sour Cream
1/3 cup mayonnaise
Salad Ingredients:
2 medium (2 cups) apples, cubed 1/2

2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 cup sweetened dried cranberries
1/2 cup seedless green grapes, halved
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 rib (1/2 cup) celery, chopped
Combine sour cream and mayonnaise
in small bowl; set aside.

8 (6-ounce) boneless skinless chicken
breast halves
1 (8-ounce) package Cheddar Cheese,
cut into (1x1x1/2-inch) slices
16 (about 3/4 pound) slices bacon
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
Heat one side of gas grill on medium or
charcoal grill until coals are ash white.
Place coals to one side in charcoal grill.
Make aluminum foil drip pan; place op-
posite hot coals.

Grill, turning every 15 minutes and
brushing with barbecue sauce during last
10 minutes, until chicken is no longer
pink (30 to 40 minutes). (If crisp bacon is
desired, place bundles over direct heat,
turning 2 to 3 times, during last 10 min-
utes.)
Oven Directions: Heat oven to 400°F.
Prepare bundles as directed above (if
crisp bacon is desired, precook bacon
until half done). Place bundles on broiler
pan, bottom-side up.
Bake for 30

But, auctioneers and antique dealers across
the country say, more and more people are
discovering them. While some may have
limited means, they are satiating their taste
for high-quality designer style by digging
for deals at auctions, junk shops and an-
tique sales. "They're there to find the one
unique thing that they can't find anywhere
else for a bargain," Ritchies president
Stephen Ranger says.
Mr. Ranger was stunned in March when
its semi-annual catalog sale attracted so
many buyers there was standing room
only. Many of the new faces in the crowd
were "private buyers," he said, meaning
people unaffiliated with businesses or
clients and just looking to furnish their

what happens in re-
cessions is that peo-
ple get used to what
is called the new
normal," he said.
"They may not want splurge on the ex-
pensive dining table but they'll look at
something a little more modest and inter-
esting that's going to fit their budget."
One reason more people may be waking
up to the possibilities is the added atten-
tion from magazines and blogs. "Cheap
chic" is the cover story for the current
Canadian House & Home magazine,
which features budget makeovers and
"flea-market style." The popularity of de-
sign blogs such as Apartmenttherapy.com
continues to grow as people seek out DIY
advice, notices of coming sales and deco-
rating tips.
On StyleNorth.com, Toronto blogger
Christopher Jones shares pearls of wisdom
gained from years as a Craigslist junkie
and scavenger at junk shops and design
stores. He started blogging when he real-
ized that although he had filled his apart-
ment with valuable antiques and eclectic
finds for practically nothing, all that shop-
ping added up. "I thought, maybe I could
curb my own spending if I had another
outlet for my passion."
There's no better time to start. At recent
auction, he saw a signed Salvador Dali
painting go for $260.
What's more, he says, an auction provides
a bonus: With the auctioneers' dry wit and
the off-beat characters the events attract,
it's almost as good as going to a show.
Mr. Hunter, who was attending his second-
ever auction, agrees.
"You get great stuff and you're entertained
at the same time. I love it."

No self-respecting Country/West-
erner would be caught dead wear-
ing a good pair of jeans without an
attention-grabbing belt buckle.
Actually, various forms of the
buckle have been in use since the
dawn of history, and antique speci-
mens used by aristocracy and mili-
tary can auction for thousands of
dollars. But the buckle as a fashion
accessory akin to costume jewelry
dates back to the early 20th Cen-
tury when Hollywood movies
spread the images of properly ac-
coutered cowboys far and wide.
And those buckles are now big in
the world of collectibles.
Many of the nicest (and most valu-
able) buckles are made of silver,
but even fairly recent brass pieces
can be valuable. A good example is
the 1974 Hesston. Made entirely of
brass with the Hesston name
stamped in large letters on the
front, fewer than 15,000 were
made. Today, collectors are willing
to pay up to $1000+ for these rare
specimens.
Buckles today span the worlds of
fashion and personal interest. Have

glow in the dark? They're all out
there, waiting to be worn and/or
collected.
The most active secondary mar-
kets, however, are for Western and
military buckles. For vintage
pieces expect to pay more for qual-
ity workmanship, for specimens
made of materials like silver, and
for those with signatures or maker's
marks. And, of course, buckles that
have not been damaged are gener-
ally worth much more than those
that have been badly
scratched,cracked, or are missing
parts.
Buckles have the added benefit
that, because of their relatively
small size and generally durable
materials, they are easy to store
and display.

Ahh the never ending cyber highway.
How many carefree and cost free miles
have we all driven. It seems to be no end
to the amount of information that can be
found with the click of a mouse and with-
out spending a dime to get it.
What many do not understand is the ex-
pense of getting a site up, keep it working
plus, the man hours to keep content fresh
and informative comes at a price. We pay
for TV and satellite radio. We spend hun-
dreds of dollars each year to carry the lat-
est cell phone with all of its amenities so
why should we not expect to pay a little
for information on the internet.
While a lot of the things we do on the in-
ternet will remain free, things are chang-
ing. The escalating expense of
maintaining a viable web site is demand-
ing that we, the consumers anti-up. After
all, if there is one adage that rings louder
every day, “nothing in life is free.” We are
seeing this play out in all aspects of our
lives daily.
Here is another adage, “you get what you
pay for.” Expect to see more of that as you
surf your way into the future.
