A TEN DAY COURSE ON RESEARCH METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES


(Sponsored by the ICSSR, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, New Delhi)

Course on Research Methods in Social Sciences has enormous potential and scope to
promote social science research in backward regions of Bihar and Jharkhand. The
ICSSR has been addressing this issue through social science research institutions
across the country. To address the need of developing quality social science research
and research professionals a ten day course on research methods in social sciences is
being conducted during June 2 to 11, 2009 by the Development Research Institute for
Sustainable Transformation Initiatives, located at Jalsain, in North Bihar. This
programme may fill up the gap with such course for the development and promotion of
quality research in social sciences towards building a better knowledge society.
Basic objectives of this course are as follows:
1. To sensitize the research scholars with research environment
2. To expose the scholars with research areas, resources and gaps
3. To equip the scholars with research techniques and their application
4. To train the scholars to address the changing research agenda
5. To integrate the scholar with mainstream research world
6. To promote quality research environment to address the problems of changing social
economic and political requirement of the society.
7. To create a sensitive research environment for building a better knowledge society.

Participants: All those persons having Post Graduate degree in Social Sciences with
good academic records, who are either pursuing their doctoral work or planning to
engage themselves in research projects, action research or social science research (not
necessarily for Ph.D.) in universities, research organisations, and NGOs, and desirous to
acquire research skills to formulate research proposals, hypotheses, and questions,
update methods for data collection, processing, analysis and thesis/ report writing with
proper documentation, etc., are potential participants. They should be sponsored/
nominated by the colleges, universities, research institutions/ NGO Employers/
Research Supervisors.
The seats are limited (maximum 30) and therefore only short-listed candidates will be
communicated for participation in this course. In case the candidates do not get any
communication by 30th May 2009, they should contact Dr. Pawan Kumar Jha, Course

No. 09973169030) of the Institute immediately for verification.
Duration of Course: This course is being organized for ten days from June 2 to11,
2009. Field visit and other suitable practical components have been incorporated in the
course to improve the quality of course.
Resource Persons: In order to provide a national exposure of research skills to
participants the Institute has mobilized reputed experts of social sciences from all India
level as resource persons to deliver lectures, provide guidance, brief notes and reading
lists to make the course more interactive and beneficial.
Free Hospitality: Selected candidates will be paid ordinary sleeper class rail or actual
public transport fare by road both ways by the shortest root to attend this course.
Participants will be provided modest hospitality (food and lodging) during stay at the
venue of course free of cost.
Registration and Course Material: Participants will have to deposit registration fees as
per guidelines of ICSSR. Teachers in regular service will have to pay @ Rs.800,
scholars with fellowship @ Rs.400 and without scholarship @ Rs.200 for registration in
this course. Participants will be provided a course kit along with stationary and
necessary reading materials.
Evaluation for Feedback: Participants will be asked to fill-up a Performa developed for
the evaluation of the course. This Performa will contain the experience of participants,
their assessments about course contents, style of orientation course and feedback about
resource persons, benefits of courses, merits and deficiencies and suggestions to
improve and changes required in orientation course, etc.
Follow up Exercise: Research scholars will be engaged in rigorous exercises and
homework during course. However, they will be brought into the network for further
interaction and follow up programmes of research through paper writing, presentation in
the seminar, panel discussion, co-orientating seminars and discussions, and developing
research proposals for further study towards their career.
Certificate to Participants: At the end of this ICSSR sponsored course each successful
participant will be awarded a certificate recognizing his or her satisfactory performance
and attendance in this course, and related activities, etc.
How to Apply: Aspirants of this course should sent their applications along with their
bio-data duly forwarded by their supervisors/HOD/Institutions along with a one - two
pages of synopsis/notes on their research work enclosed with their applications to the
Director of the Institute. Application should reach to the Director’s office latest by 20th
May, 2009 along with account payee Demand Draft of Rs. 800/400/200 as the case may
be in favour of Secretary, Development Research Institute for Sustainable
Transformation Initiatives, Jalsain. Participants may deposit registration fee in cash
also at the venue of course at the time of registration but preference will be given to the
candidates who have already enclosed Demand Draft for registration. Demand Draft of
denied applicants will be returned in due course. Those who are already engaged in
research may come with their data and specific problems related to their research for
further clarifications. The academic career of the candidate, as well as the
recommendations of the supervisors in regards to their competence and motivation
should also be given due importance.
Important dates:
Submission of application with registration fee on or before 20th May, 2009.
Communication to selected participants by 28th May, 2009.
Reporting at venue on June 2. 2009 at 9.00 AM.

Venue of Course: The venue of training course has been fixed at the premises of
L.N.Janta College, Jhanjharpur (Madhubani), Bihar. This College is about five kms north
from Jhajharpur railway station and on the route of Darbhanga-Nirmali metre gauge
railway line. Darbhanga is well connected with broad gauge railway line from different
parts of the country.
