Moon Project: To evaluate your learning, turn in your moon phase calendar along with your answers to the

following questions: 1. What did you learn from your observations of the moon over 2 weeks? I feel that I learned a lot about the moon that I hadnt thought of, throughout the course of this activity. For one I never realized before doing this project, that the moon had specific times it rose and set in the sky, for some reason I always just assumed once it was dark the moon would just be their especially once it got late. I also had never really noticed before that the moon would change locations and position in the sky during the course of its different phases. 2. What did you learn from the sun/earth/moon modeling activity? This activity made it easier to grasp the reason for why we only see one side of the moon at any time, or why the phases look the way they do. I also always struggled with the names and direction in which the phases happened and so this helped me to have a better grasp on these aspects. 3. Explain in your own words why the moon has phases. Each of the moons phases is the result of the way the moon is rotating around the sun and then reflecting the suns light towards earth, the less the moon is covering the light of the sun at night, the more light reflects to earth. Which causes the different phases from dark at new moon, to really light at the full moon. 4. Why do you think you were asked to observe the moon for 2 weeks before you were involved in the modeling activity and the definition of moon phase terms? (Consider what you know about how learners learn.)

5. What grade level would be appropriate for Tennessee children to make a moon calendar and learn about moon phases? Cite the state standards that support your choice.

4th Grade: 0407.6.1 Chart the movements of the sun, moon, and earth to develop an explanation for the phases of the moon and solar and lunar eclipses. 6. What are some adjustments that you may consider before doing this with your students? One thing I would do, would be to make sure that my students knew important things about the lesson before starting such as to check the moons rise and set times, as this was something I was not aware of when beginning and found necessary on occasion during the project once I found out. I would also make sure that they each understood the directions, and send a note home to their parents describing the project so that theyre parents would be aware of the project and can help them with it.
