Residents of Washington County and the surrounding area should keep their eyes open for a wayward flock of pink flamingoes that just might show up on a front lawn in your neighborhood! The flamingoes are on the move to benefit the Haynes House of Hope, a comfort care home for the terminally ill in Granville. If you wake up to find the flock resting in front of your house, the only way to make them leave is to make a $25 donation to Haynes House. For this donation, you get to decide where the flock will land next. Its all in good fun and for a good cause. To arrange for a flocking, call Haynes House at 518-642-8155. The flock is willing to travel throughout the area, so lawns far and wide can be visited by the fabulous flamingoes. The Haynes House of Hope, located at 7187 State Route 140 in Granville, serves the terminally ill and their families. The residents stay and care are provided free of charge. Since Haynes House receives no funding from insurance or government agencies, it is totally dependent on fundraising events, donations, grants, and the generosity of the community to fulfill its mission. More information is available at www.thehayneshouseofhope.com or by calling 518-642-8155. NOMINATIONS ARE SOUGHT FOR POULTNEYS 2013 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR, by Janice B. Wednesday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. the Cambridge Historical Society & Museum will hold the third in a series of summer Wednesday night programs at the Museum on Broad Street. Mr. Ken Gottry, a local historian, will speak of his project - the history of the Yellow Brick Road celebrating its 100th anniversary. In the 1800s the flooding of Blairs Brook (now Owl Kill) made Main Steet and Spring Street impassable for days even after the briefest of showers. The East End and West End were physically, politically, and economically separated. In 1913 the village voted to pave Main Street with yellow bricks. While the project served its ultimate goal of uniting the two communities, it also emphasized their long-held sense of independence. Following in his fathers footsteps, Ken Gottry, a traveling computer consultant, dabbles in local history. Ken will relive the villages history, culminating in the construction of the Yellow Brick Road by his great grandfather, William Hitchcock. Come out on August 14 at 7:00 p.m. and hear Ken relive this important event in the history of Cambridge. The Museum will open at 6:00 p.m. for tours with refreshments to follow.
