Extremely wide leaves help produce outstanding NDFd on this very tall hybrid. Huge tonnage potential with a flex ear, pinkish cob color, soft kernel texture, evenly matched grain to stover dry down, and excellent NDFd makes 2114L an ideal Leafy silage hybrid in a high corn silage diet. Produces high NDF forage perfect for a dry cow or heifer ration. Also available as an RR or HX hybrid.

The Benefits of Leafy

An old school of thought once suggested that the best silage corn was obtained by simply chopping your biggest and tallest grain hybrids. While this method may satisfy some tonnage requirements, there is much left to be desired when speaking in terms of actually benefiting a cows diet. Many years of corn breeding with the goals of producing digestible, easily manageable corn silage have resulted in leafy corn hybrids designed to profitably feed dairy cows. These silage specific leafy hybrids have certain characteristics that are far more beneficial to a cow and more easily enable the cow to utilize a greater amount of the whole plant compared to a traditional grain variety. Generally speaking, leafy varieties bring more to the table than any other grain or dual purpose hybrid. Heres a few reasons why: High yields of digestible nutrients - Leafy varieties typically produce 7 -10 leaves above the ear resulting in greater tonnage than grain, or dual-purpose varieties. Leafy varieties are also bred for specific characteristics, which include a thinner stalk rind (50-54% digestible) and larger pith (72-74% digestible). Soft kernel texture/digestible starch - Leafy varieties are bred to have soft, more floury-type grain kernels. As a result, the soft kernel texture has increased starch digestibility compared to dual-purpose hybrids, and decreased kernel passage. This is a benefit when the processing of corn silage is not available. Slow kernel filling and dry-down - Compared to grain varieties, leafy corn varieties have twice the window of harvest. With a wider window of harvest, it is easier to harvest the silage at ideal moistures. A slower grain filling period also allows the stalk and leaves more drying time, which results in a better equated overall moisture to avoid seepage. Maturity for pre-frost harvest - After frost, studies have shown that energy levels in corn may drop an average of 1.5 points per frost. Determined in tests using dual-purpose checks, farmers who plant a 95 day grain hybrid would plant a corresponding leafy variety of 95-97 days. With many varieties of leafy corn to choose from, you can pick the variety that best suits your geographic area. High energy potential - Trials conducted in Canada showed that leafy corn varieties contain twice the amount of carbohydrates above the ear compared to dual-purpose hybrids. The forage carbohydrates are usually found as sugars. A higher sugar content thus relates to high palatability. Additional sugars may also aid in the fermentation process. Special traits for producers needs - Leafy silage varieties are available from WOLF RIVER VALLEY SEEDS in herbicide resistant versions to offer just one more incredible benefit from an already amazing product.

A plant of Leafy corn with eleven leaves above the ear.

Some leafy corn varieties have a white cob instead of a red cob. The white cob is high in sugar content, and therefore makes it more palatable than a red cob. Also, digestibility of the white cob is higher than its red counterpart. Pictured at the left is a cob of 2702L, showcasing its white cob. Note that this cob is adorned with 16 rows of kernels.

Annual Forages
Our main focus at Wolf River Valley Seeds is to provide you with a premium product. This priority has resulted in the development of a number of high quality forages tailored specifically with your herds production and performance in mind.

White River Mix

White River Mix is comprised of 60% Trical 2700 and 40% Arvica Forage Peas. Both varieties have proven superior palatability and crude protein percentage. Recommended seeding rate is 100110 #/acre when under- seeded and 120-125#/acre when seeded alone. General rule of harvest is 55 - 60 days after planting or in the mid-late boot stage. White River Mix has been developed to produce a forage for a lactating cow diet or where a high protein forage is desired.

Green River Mix

Green River Mix is comprised of 50% Forage Plus Oats and 50% Arvica Forage Peas. This mix will produce a moderate protein level while maintaining yield and palatability. Recommended seeding rate is 100-110 #/acre when underseeded and 120-130#/acre when seeded alone. General rule of harvest is 55-60 days after planting or in the mid-late boot stage. Green River Mix is designed to produce a forage to fit into your non lactating cow, heifer or beef cow ration.

Forage Plus Oats

A tall, late maturity oat variety that has high forage yields. ForagePlus has up to an eight-day wider harvest window prior to late boot stage compared to other oat varieties. Fits well in a dry cow or heifer diet.

Arvica Forage Peas

Strictly a forage pea that produces extremely high forage quality and very high crude protein levels. With its huge leaves and excellent palatability, Arvica peas make an excellent companion crop with Trical 2700 triticale and ForagePlus oats. Remember to inoculate peas when planted alone

Trical 2700 - Spring Triticale

A widely adapted spring triticale for grazing, silage and boot-stage hay. It can be planted alone, or blended with forage peas to increase palatability and protein levels. 2700 has outstanding digestibility (IVTD), crude protein content and significantly higher yields than other boot-stage harvested cereal grains. Trical 2700 Spring Triticale has superior tolerance to disease, lagoon water and can withstand tough growing conditions. 2700 can also be used as a nurse crop. The stall phase of Trical 2700 in the seedling growth phase does not overshadow or out-compete alfalfa.

Trical 815 - Wnter Triticale

815 is an awned winter annual cereal grain. A high leaf to stem ratio along with a very dense canopy of long leaves makes 815 a winner in yield and quality. Trical 815 Winter Triticale is designed for maximum forage production and can be used in a double crop system with corn silage where growing degree days will allow. Winter forage triticale will assimilate large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous making it an excellent tool in managing livestock waste. 8

The Advantages of Triticale as

Triticale (trit-ah- KAY- lee) is a hybrid cross of wheat and rye developed in the late 19th century in Europe. A hybrid of wheat and rye, triticale combines the beneficial properties of wheat--high yield potential, good grain quality, and disease resistance--with the beneficial properties of rye--harsh climate tolerance, and low requirements for soil fertility. Since its development triticale has been utilized for its high quality feed potential both as a grain crop and as a forage crop. To date, hundreds of different varieties of triticale have been created to exploit many of the unique characteristics of this versatile cereal crop. One particular application which continues to be a strong asset for us at Wolf River Valley Seeds is triticales great potential for a premium forage crop.

Here are a few qualities of our Spring Triticale variety Trical 2700 and our Winter Triticale variety Trical 815 .

TRICAL 2700
Trical 2700 is a widely adapted, highly versatile spring triticale for grazing, silage, and boot-stage hay. It is excellent planted alone, or blended with other cereals or forage peas. Trical 2700 is also proven to have outstanding digestibility (IVTD), crude protein content, and significantly higher yields than other boot-stage cereal forages. In Wolf River Valley Seeds testing, Trical 2700, and forage mixes containing Trical 2700 produced crude protein contents of over 21% and Relative Feed Value of over 200. Compared to other cereal forages, Trical 2700 has superior tolerance to disease, lagoon water, and can withstand tough growing conditions. Trical 2700 can also be used as a nurse crop. The stall phase of Trical 2700 seedling growth does not overshadow, or out-compete the alfalfa` DOUBLE CROPPING SILAGE AND HAY APPLICATIONS: Operators wishing to maximize the productivity of their acreage and those in need of grazing or additional forage production are finding this system useful. Triticale is a cool season crop and has rapid ground cover in the fall months. Plants are most winter hardy when secondary root structure is two to three inches long. This system is very useful in managing dairy waste issues. Harvest is usually as late boot forage in early May or hay in late May. Many growers have succeeded in reaching 50 tons of forage per acre in one year at 65% moisture, from a double crop combination of TRICAL silage followed by corn silage. GRAZING APPLICATIONS: Trical triticale grazing programs are typically a late fall, winter and early spring system. After the cash crop is harvested, Trical triticale can be planted as early as mid July. In the heat of the summer it usually takes at least 45 days to establish the triticale with an adequate secondary root system. Using a straight winter type of product like Trical 815 or a blended product like Trical 815 and 2700 together can impact productivity. The blended product will add a boost in fall grazing as the spring growth habit of the Trical 2700 will continue to grow rapidly until winter frosts . MANAGEMENT TIPS Primary planting dates for Silage: Late September through mid October (October 1-15th ideally). Seeding rates: Seeding rates in early fall (Late September/ Early October) should be 100-115 #/acre. Mid October to November should be 110-115 #/acre because of lack of degree days to initiate tillering. Planting:: Conventional planting similar to wheat. Place seed 1 inch into moisture in a well prepared seed bed. At least 100 pounds of available N is needed. 40-80 pounds on P & K will also be needed. Triticale can utilize dairy waste nutrients for some or all of the needed N, P, and K. Triticale has place number one in University research for Phosphorous uptake. When applied through manure and lagoon water, triticale has been known to assimilate up to 300 units of Nitrogen if the applications are metered uniformly. Harvest is usually as late boot forage in early May or hay in late May. Many growers have succeeded in reaching 50 tons of forage per acre in one year at 65% moisture, from a double crop combination of TRICAL silage followed by corn silage. Ensiling should occur at 65% moisture. As with other forages, a quality liquid inoculant is recommended to be applied at a minimum of 100,000 CFU (colony forming units) per gram of silage. This will help prevent harmful yeasts and molds from occurring and by lowering the pH of the forage to prevent heating and help preserve forage quality. In high nitrogen situations, always test forages for nitrates before feeding

Guide to Understanding Seed Technology
GT
Provides tolerance to in-crop applications of glyphosate-based herbicides while offering growers a full range of assurances and the freedom to choose their preferred glyphosate brand

GT/CB/LL

Combines the convenience and proven performance of glyphosate-tolerance, corn borer resistance and tolerance to glufosinate herbicide in a single hybrid.

GT3000

The ultimate in yield protection guards against both corn borer and corn rootworm, with tolerance to in-season applications of both glyphosate and glufosinate herbicides. Agrisure Corn Traits Technology from Syngenta. For more information, visit agrisuretraits.com. Agrisure is a registered trademark of a Syngenta Group Company. Roundup Ready crops contain genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup agricultural herbicides. Roundup agricultural herbicides will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate. RR - Roundup Ready

Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield

Second generation Roundup Ready soybean technology, which offers higher yield potential than first generation technology.

HX- HERCULEX I

Insect Protection provides full-plant protection all season against European corn borer, southwestern Corn borer, black cutworm, fall armyworm and western bean cutworm. All HERCULEX I hybrids contain LibertyLink technology. HERCULEX and the HERCULEX logo are trademarks of Dow AgroSciences LLC.

Seed products with the LibertyLink (LL) trait are resistant to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium, an alternative to glyphosate in corn, and combine with high yield genetics with the powerful, non-selective, postemergent weed control of Ignite herbicide for optimum yield and excellent weed control. LibertyLink, Ignite and the Water Droplet logo are registered trademarks of Bayer.

Corn Silage Terminology to maximize your profitability

NDF Quantity
Is a measurement of the plant cell wall or the fiber portion of the plant. Component parts include Cellulose, Hemi-Cellulose, and Lignin. NDF has an effect on gut fill and dry matter intake.

Starch Digestibility
The rate of starch digestibility in corn silage hybrids can impact microbial protein yields. Increasing rumen bug populations can reduce the need for by-pass protein, the most expensive source of protein.

NDFd Quantity
Is a measurement of the actual digestibility of the fiber. High NDFd (Digestible Fiber) can increase dry matter intakes, provide more energy, reduce feed costs and lead to healthier cows.

Sugar Quantity
Finding varieties with higher sugar content may aid in silage fermentation and the production of Volatile Fatty Acids, or VFAs. VFAs can produce up to 80% of the energy needs of a lactating cow.

NFC
Non Fiber Carbohydrates (starches, sugars, & pectins) are rapidly digested in the rumen. By being able to predict by hybrid or variety, those with higher or lower NFCs as a percentage of total dry matter will allow you to fine tune your forage program in relationship to your other forage components.

Kernel Texture
Can be very important if you dont have a kernel processor. Hard kernel hybrids may not be as digestible and may pass through the cow without being utilized.
