This document summarizes a study that mapped brown rot symptoms in sour cherry tree canopies in three dimensions using a magnetic digitizer. Spatial analysis found that symptoms were generally aggregated within the canopy volume. Analysis of associations between symptom types indicated that previous year's twig cankers may influence the spatial pattern of current year's symptoms, providing quantitative support for twig cankers acting as primary inoculum sources. This new approach provides a framework to quantify three-dimensional spatial patterns within complex tree canopies applicable to many fields of research.
