SeniorConsultantatUTTIPEC,DelhiDevelopmentAuthority andMemberofHighCourtSpecialTaskForceonUrbanTransportation 3:45pm Tuesday,29June2010 The Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) was established by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in 2008 to, inter alia, enhance mobility, reduce congestion, promote traffic safety and avoid transport planning pitfalls. While planning and policy frameworks applicable in Delhi provide a strong mandate for Transit Oriented Development (TOD), this is not necessarily reflected in infrastructure investments and other decisions made by the city. Romi Roy, who is providing policy and design support to UTTIPEC, will present the conceptual basis of TOD, especially its links with land use planning and the overall vision for the city and relate it to ongoing initiatives at UTTIPEC. Set in a context where TOD competes for space with other visions of the city, the presentation discusses that changes that are necessary to move to a TOD for the city and builds on the speakers experience with UTTIPEC, where the city strategies, projects and plans that will determine the future of Delhi are currently being negotiated. Romi Roy is an architect by training, and currently holds senior consulting positions with the Govt of Delhi and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and is also Visiting Faculty member at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. At the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) established by the DDA, she provides policy and design support on Transit Oriented Development in Delhi. She has extensive international experience with transit related projects and projects combining urban design and planning strategies with infrastructure and resource management systems in the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. Ms. Roy was educated at the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi and University of Texas at Austin.
This is the fifth in a series of Urban Workshops planned by the Centre de Sciences Humaines (CSH), New Delhi and Centre for Policy Research (CPR). These workshops seek to provoke public discussion on issues relating to the development of the city and try to address all its facets including its administration, culture, economy, society, and politics.
