TheWeenerWahIIisaclassicwahinthespiritoftheClydeMcCoywithaccoutrementstomeettheneedsofmodern players.Thisincludestruebypassoperation,filterselectionaswellasanoptionalboostoutput.Italsoaccommodates severalinductortypesforfurthercustomization. TheWeenerWahIIhasseveralchangesfromver.1indirectresponsetocustomerfeedback. Changelog RemovedthePeaktrimmer. ChangedtheFiltercontroltothreefixedfrequencycaps,selectableviaarotaryorDPDT. AddedaGaintrimmertoadjusttheoutputofQ1. ChangedtheoptionaloutputbuffertoanoptionalJFETbasedboost. Tweakedthepowersupplydesign.

Sweep:ThisspecializedpotcontrolstherangeoftheWahfilterandisoperatedwithyourfoot viathewahtreadle. Gain:ThistrimmersetstheoveralloutputofQ1.Clockwiseadjustmentincreasesthegain. Whack:Thesearetheswitchablefiltercapswhichadjustthefrequencyemphasisofthewah.Highervaluecaps produceadeeperordarkersound.Smallcapsyieldthinnerandmoreresonantfilters. TheWeenerWahIIalsoletsyouuseeitheraxialorradialfilmcapsforsomecomponents.TheseareC1,C5,C7,C6,C4, C9andC3.Thespacingforradialcapsis5mm(boxcapsorlowvoltagepolyfilm).Theaxialspacingforthesecapsis 18mm.

TheWhippleinductorcanbefoundoneBay.NotethattheVoxandDunlop arrangementswetakenfromtwoinductorsIhadfromoldermodels.Differentor newermodelsmayhavedifferentspacing.TheFaselspacingisstandard, AFAIK.

TheSweeppotislistedas100kICARtaper.Thisisnottheonlytypethatcanbeused.Somepotsofferdifferent resistancevalues(150kor200k)and/orslightlymodifiedtapers.Thisisyourchoice.Anyofthemwillworkwiththe WeenerWahII,butIhaveonlytesteditwiththestandard100kICAR.

Setup
TheGaintrimmershouldbesetatabout1/3upclockwisenominally.Thiswillgiveapprimately470Ohmsofresistanceoff theemitterofQ1.AdjusttheGaintrimmerclockwiseforadditionalgain. T1setsthebiasforQ3.UsingyourDMM,connecttheblackleadtogroundandtheredleadtothepadmarkedTP.Adjust T1untilyouread4.5vDContheDMM.

TheWhackcontrolletsyouchoosethreedifferentfiltercapsfortheWah.Ihavelistedthevaluesas6n8,10nand15non theB.O.M.Theseproduceanicerangeoffilters,butarenottheonlyonesyoucanuse.Feelfreetomixitupabit.You probablydonotwanttogolowerthan5n6orhigherthan22n. Withthiswiring,C6isselectedinthemiddleposition.C7andC5areselectedinthetwoouterpositions.

TheWeenerWahIIhasanindependentJFETbasedboostcircuitthatyoucanuse.Youcanwiretheboostsectionas bypassableorhardwiredtotheoutputoftheWahcircuit(notrecommended).Theboostcircuithasafairamountofgain onitsown.ItcanalsodrivethefrontendofanoverdriveathighsettingsoftheVolcontrol.LowersettingsoftheVol controlproducelittlegainandclosetounityoutput.TheadvantageofthelowVolsettingisthatithasalowimpedance outputthatwillworkinfrontoffuzzpedal(averycommonproblemwithtraditionalWahs). Ifyouaregoingtousetheboost,Irecommendwiringanactual100kApotinsteadofatrimmerfortheVolcontrol.Ifyou donotwishtousetheboostfunction,simplyomitallthepartsbetweenBINandBOUTontheschematic:itiscompletely independentoftheWahcircuit.

HardwiretheBoost(alwaysonnotrecommended)

Inthiscase,theOUTpadonthePCBisleftunconnected,andtheALTandBIN padsarejumpered.ThisconnectstheoutputoftheWahtotheinputoftheboost. Theboostoutisthenconnectedtothe3PDT.

BypassableBoost(recommended)

Inthisexample,theOUTpadiswiredtothecenterofaDPDT(On/On)toggleswitch. Whentheswitchisup,theboostisbypassed.WhentheswitchisdowntheOUT connectstotheboostinput,andboostoutputconnectstothe3PDT.NotethattheALT padisomitted.

Otherconsiderations
IfyouarebuildingaWah,youaregoingtohavetohaveawahshell,obviously!Smallbeardoesofferblankshellsata decentprice.YoucantypicallyfindcheapwahoneBayorCraigslistwhichyoucanrepurposefortheWeener.Anold, cheapCrybabyisagoodcandidate.Youmayevenbeabletogetadecentinductoroffit,too. TherearethreemountingholesonthePCBoneroundandtwoslotted.Notethatthereareavarietyofshellsoutthere, andnotallarestandardizedsotheremaybesomevarianceinscreworholeplacement.Imeasuredthemountingholes usingtwoolderCrybabyshells,soitshouldcovermostneeds. Wahshellsareprettytough.TheyarethickerthantheaverageHammondtypeenclosure.Makesureyouusea fairlynewbitifyouaregoingtodrillanyextraholes.Youcanalsoapplysomeoiltoyourbittofacilitatedrilling.

Ifyouaregoingtousea3PDTswitchforbypassingforthepurposesofapplyinganLEDindicator,pleasenotethatthe actuatorshaftofthe3PDTisabitshortcomparedtoaDPDTortheolderSPDTs.However,Ifoundthatifyouremovethe bottomnutofa3PDTandmountthebasedirectlytotheenclosure,thenusethelockingwasherandnutonthetopsideof theshell,theactuatorisjusttherightheightforthewahplatetoengageit. Lastly,youneedtogreaseyourWeener.Rather,youneedtogreasetherackandpinionwherethepotandshellconnect. Thereareanumberofgreasesyoucanuse.Iuselithiumgreasepurchasedfromanautopartsstorethatcostabut$3. Theresenoughinthecontainertobuildprobably100wahs.
