Quote of the Month

I have written 240 books on a wide variety of topics...Some of it I based on education I received in my school, but most of it was backed by other ways of learning--chiefly in the books I obtained in the public library. --Isaac Asimov

FROM THE DIRECTOR

The Friends of the Library have another fine program scheduled for us on Thursday, August 8th at 2:00. Oscar Fann of WTVY will present an informative program on weather with emphasis on hurricane preparedness. It should be a good program, especially if the programs they had during the month of June are any indication. We had a nice crowd of approximately 25 people hear Bob Harry of Aabon and David Duke of Wiregrass 211, and we thank them for their excellent presentations. Judge Val McGee continues with his monthly group forums on writing but now the time has changed. He will meet the first and third Thursdays at 2:30 in the East Wing of the Library. His group is rapidly growing and the participants are thoroughly enjoying their time together. If youd like more information, please call the Library at 774-5480. We now have E-books that can be downloaded on your computer, mobile device, Kindle, iPod, or other compatible devices. To access your selection, have your library card ready and log on to http:// camillia.lib.overdrive.com. You will use your 13-digit card number located on the back of your card, but drop the last digit. If you have difficulty or need help, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 774-5480, and a staff member will gladly assist you. Each Monday the Book Committee from Friends of the Library comes together to sort, price, and display books for their Book Sale Room. Theyre now preparing for another Mini Book Sale scheduled for Saturday, September 7 from 10:00 until 1:00. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to find some real good deals on moderately priced books. If youd like to be a part of this energetic group, call the Library at 774-5480.

FROM THE FRIENDS (continued) time out of your busy schedule, come join us and bring a friend. THE FOL DEPENDS ON OUR MEMBERS SUPPORT TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE LIBRARY. Sincerely, Mo Armstrong, President

Longstreet Cemetery of Dale County By Jocelyn Rayford The Longstreet Cemetery of Dale County is the location of six cemeteries that were moved in 1942, during the formation of Fort Rucker during WWII. It is located where there was once a Longstreet school for the Longstreet Community. After the school closed, the property on which it was located changed hands several times. Finally in 1942, it was deeded by Cary Fuller to the Ebenezer Baptist Church. According to the book Cemeteries of Dale County, Alabama 2002, published by the Dale County Genealogical and Historical Society 2003, Longstreet Community Cemetery is located off US 231 on County Road 36. Ebenezer Baptist Church was originally built as a log structure in 1842. Later, in 1892, a high-pitched roof was added, but in 1942 the roof was lowered. The original sanctuary is paneled and bricked outside. Along with moving the church to the Longstreet community, the Federal Government also moved six cemeteries of former churches located on Fort Rucker grounds to Longstreet: Ebenezer Baptist, Zion Methodist, Haw Ridge Methodist, Mt. Liberty, and two private cemeteries. On July 24, 2011, this Longstreet Cemetery was marked by a dedication ceremony with the erection of a historical marker granted by the Alabama Historical Commission listed in the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register. Also, recognition was given Jack Perkins, Sarah Byrd, Peggy and Scott Lewis for establishing the Longstreet Cemetery Trust Fund. More information about Longstreet Cemetery may be found in the July 20, 2011 issue of the Southern Star in an article written by Joe Adams, as well as a video that is available in the Genealogy Room. The Dale County Genealogical Society made an informational video by Peggy Lewis and Charles Cooper on May 2011, labeled Ebenezer-Longstreet. Additional information can be requested about this cemetery by contacting Lee Anne Wofford (334) 230-2659 for a free e-book on this subject.
