In a major initiative to address adolescent anaemia(deficiency of red blood cells or haemoglobin in blood resulting in pallor or weariness), the government is launching a Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) Programme from Karnataka from Wednesday. Anaemia in adolescents results in poor physical growth, reduced school performance and diminished concentration in daily tasks. In adolescent girls, it enhances the risk of preterm delivery and of their having low birth weight babies who are not likely to reach the age of one. Young women in the age group 15-24 account for about one-third of all maternal deaths.

The key features of WIFS include administering supervised Weekly IFA supplements of 100 mg elemental iron and 500 mg folic acid; screening of target groups for moderate/severe anaemia and referring these cases to an appropriate health facility; bi-annual de-worming (Albendazole 400 mg), six months apart, for control of helminth (parasitic worm) infestation, and imparting information on improving dietary intake and prevention of intestinal worm infestation. The Health and Family Welfare Ministry has suggested to the States that a day in a week, preferably Monday, be earmarked for providing IFA tablets to adolescents.

About 56 per cent girls, 30 per cent boys in India suffering from the condition It is the underlying cause of 20-40 per cent maternal deaths
Different terrorist groups in the world? As dust over the second Parliamentary elections in Bhutan settles, two interesting facts have the potential to upset the dominant narrative that India withdrew the subsidy on cooking gas in order to defeat the then Prime Minister who had tried to open talks with China without taking New Delhi into confidence. New Delhi had no intention of cutting the subsidy, especially on the eve of the second round of Parliamentary elections in Bhutan. It was a mix-up in communication between two Ministries that led to suspension of subsidy to Bhutan, said highly placed sources. Cholera & swine flu?

In a rare gesture, the British government has decided to commemorate V.K. Krishna Menons long and eventful association with London by putting up an English Heritage blue plaque at the house where he lived when he first moved to the city. The plaque at Number 30 Langdon Park Road in Highgate, north London, where he lived from 1929 to 1931, will be unveiled on Wednesday by Left-Wing Labour veteran Tony Benn who knew Menon personally. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel are among the other Indian leaders previously honoured by English Heritage. During his long stay in London, culminating in his being appointed independent Indias first High Commissioner to the U.K., Menon took an active interest in the social and political life of the city.
Vengalil Krishnan Krishna Menon (3 May 1896 6 October 1974) was an Indian nationalist, diplomat and statesman, described as the second most powerful man in India by Time magazine and others,[1][2]after his ally and intimate friend, Jawaharlal Nehru. Noted for his eloquence, brilliance, and forceful, highly abrasive persona, Menon inspired widespread adulation and fervent detraction in both India and the West; to his supporters, he was an unapologetic champion of India in the face of Western imperialism, who famously taught the white man his place;[3] to his Western detractors, Nehrus evil genius.[4] US President Dwight Eisenhower characterised him as menace () governed by an ambition to prove himself the master international manipulator and politician of the age, while Indian President K.R. Narayanan eulogised him as a truly great man; decades after his death, Menon remains an enigmatic and controversial figure. Characterised as "vitriolic, intolerant, impatient, and exigent yes, but generous, sensitive, considerate, a great teacher too, and a great man" by Lord Listowell, the last British secretary of state

for India, Menon cut an influential figure on the world scene. As a young man, Menon served as cofounding editor of Penguin Books, and led the overseas wing of the Indian independence movement, launching the India League in London, aggressively campaigning within the United Kingdom to win public support for Indian independence, and rallying the support of such superpowers as the Soviet Union. In the immediate wake of independence, Menon emerged as engineer of and spokesman for Indias foreign policy, and, more generally, architect of the non-aligned movement; he headed Indias diplomatic missions to the United Kingdom and the United Nations, and distinguished himself in diplomatic matters varying from the Kashmir issue to the Suez crisis. Returning to India, he was repeatedly elected to both houses of the Indian parliament from constituencies as varied as Bombay, Bengal, and his native Kerala, and served as Minister of Defense, overseeing the modernisation of the Indian military and development of the Indian militaryindustrial complex, and spearheading the Indian annexation of Goa. He resigned in the wake of the Sino-Indian war, following allegations of Indias military unpreparedness, but remained counselor to Nehru, member of parliament and elder statesman until his death.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on a Public Interest Litigation petition seeking framing of guidelines for vehicles carrying iron rods and other protruding objects which pose a serious threat of accidents. Notice to

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain two public interest writ petitions challenging the appointment of Shashi Kant Sharma as Comptroller and AuditorGeneral of India. A Bench of Chief Justice Altamas Kabir and Justices Ibrahim Kalifulla and Vikaramajit Sen asked the petitioners to approach the High Court concerned for relief. In the first petition, the former Chief Election Commissioner, N. Gopalaswami, and either other eminent citizens, said: As far as the office of CAG is concerned, the government has followed no system for selection. There are no selection committee, no criteria, no transparency and no call for applications or nominations. The process is entirely arbitrary and opaque, and thus completely violative of rule of law and several judgments of this court. Also, the zone of consideration has been restricted to civil servants, a limitation not found in the Constitution. The petitioners said Mr. Sharmas tenure as Defence Secretary saw the eruption of a scam in purchase of Tatra trucks for the Army. The appointment of a person with such direct conflict of interest is also against the code of ethics of auditors. An auditor who, for whatsoever reason, cannot be, or is expected not to be, unbiased, cannot be allowed to function as an auditor, more so as Indias constitutional auditor of the public finances.

Stem cells are biological cells found in all multicellular organisms, that can divide (through mitosis) anddifferentiate into diverse specialized cell types and can self-renew to produce more stem cells. Inmammals, there are two broad types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, which are isolated from the inner cell

mass of blastocysts, and adult stem cells, which are found in various tissues. In adult organisms, stem cells and progenitor cells act as a repair system for the body, replenishing adult tissues. In a developing embryo, stem cells can differentiate into all the specialized cells[ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm-see induced pluripotent stem cells] (these are called pluripotent cells), but also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs, such as blood, skin, or intestinal tissues. There are three accessible sources of autologous adult stem cells in humans: 1. Bone marrow, which requires extraction by harvesting, that is, drilling into bone (typically the femuror iliac crest), 2. Adipose tissue (lipid cells), which requires extraction by liposuction, and

3. Blood, which requires extraction through pheresis, wherein blood is drawn from the donor (similar to a blood donation), passed through a machine that extracts the stem cells and returns other portions of the blood to the donor. Stem cells can also be taken from umbilical cord blood just after birth. Of all stem cell types, autologous harvesting involves the least risk. By definition, autologous cells are obtained from one's own body, just as one may bank his or her own blood for elective surgical procedures. Highly plastic adult stem cells are routinely used in medical therapies, for example in bone marrow transplantation. Stem cells can now be artificially grown and transformed (differentiated) into specialized cell types with characteristics consistent with cells of various tissues such as muscles or nerves throughcell culture. Embryonic cell lines and autologous embryonic stem cells generated through therapeutic cloning have also been proposed as promising candidates for future therapies

Induced pluripotent[edit]
Main article: Induced pluripotent stem cell These are not adult stem cells, but rather adult cells (e.g. epithelial cells) reprogrammed to give rise to pluripotent capabilities. Using genetic reprogramming with protein transcription factors, pluripotent stem cells equivalent to embryonic stem cells have been derived from human adult skin tissue.[54][55][56] Shinya Yamanaka and his colleagues at Kyoto University used the transcription factors Oct3/4, Sox2, c-Myc, and Klf4[54] in their experiments on cells from human faces. Junying Yu, James Thomson, and their colleagues at the University of WisconsinMadison used a different set of factors, Oct4, Sox2, Nanog and Lin28,[54] and carried out their experiments using cells from human foreskin. As a result of the success of these experiments, Ian Wilmut, who helped create the first cloned animal Dolly the Sheep, has announced that he will abandonsomatic cell nuclear transfer as an avenue of research.[57] Frozen blood samples can be used as a source of induced pluripotent stem cells, opening a new avenue for obtaining the valued cells

Treatments[edit]
Main article: Stem cell treatments

Diseases and conditions where stem cell treatment is promising or emerging. [63] Bone marrow transplantation is, as of 2009, the only established use of stem cells.

Medical researchers believe that stem cell therapy has the potential to dramatically change the treatment of human disease. A number of adult stem cell therapies already exist, particularly bone marrow transplants that are used to treat leukemia.[64] In the future, medical researchers anticipate being able to use technologies derived from stem cell research to treat a wider variety of diseases including cancer, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and muscle damage, amongst a number of other impairments and conditions.[65][66] However, there still exists a great deal of social and scientific uncertainty surrounding stem cell research, which could possibly be overcome through public debate and future research, and further education of the public. One concern of treatment is the risk that transplanted stem cells could form tumors and become cancerous if cell division continues uncontrollably.[67] Stem cells are widely studied, for their potential therapeutic use and for their inherent interest. [68] Supporters of embryonic stem cell research argue that such research should be pursued because the resultant treatments could have significant medical potential. It has been proposed that surplus embryos created for in vitro fertilization could be donated with consent and used for the research. The recent development of iPS cells has been called a bypass of the legal controversy. Laws limiting the destruction of human embryos have been credited for being the reason for development of iPS cells, but it is still not completely clear whether hiPS cells are equivalent to hES cells. Recent work demonstrates hotspots of aberrant epigenomic reprogramming in hiPS cells (Lister, R., et al., 2011).
