of students: Learning Area : Learning Objective: Physics Form 4A 12 April 2010 (Mon) 7.45 am 9.05am (80 minutes) 25 students Forces and Motion Understanding elasticity
Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, a student is able to: A Master content knowledge a. Define elasticity b. Define Hookes law c. Define elastic potential energy and state that Ep=1/2kx2 B Master Scientific Skills/TSTS a. Carry out a simple activity in groups to find the relationship between amount of force applied to a spring and amount of deformation of an object. Demonstrate Scientific Attitudes and Noble Values a. Actively participate in carrying out the activity as a team. b. Appreciate the value of time by carrying out the activity briskly and being on task all the time.
Scientific Concepts: a) Elasticity is the ability of a material to returns to its original shape after the external forces that made it deform is removed b) Hookes Law states, the amount of force applied to a spring or elastic object is proportional to the amount of deformation (length of stretch or compression). The greater the force applied to an elastic object, the more deformation (stretch or compression) there is. 48
c) Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in elastic materials as the result of their stretching or compressing Materials, equipments and resource materials: An eraser A ruler A rubber band A pencil A rock Text book Whiteboard Power point slide LCD projector White screen A spring
Consideration of Safety Precautions: None Prior Knowledge: Students already have knowledge of the force and have applied it in solving problems. They also have learnt the topic of spring and its characteristic in primary school. Phase Content Teaching and Learning Activities Teacher Activities Notes Student Activities

Elasticity is the ability of a material to returns to its original shape after the external forces that made it deform is removed
Simple activity Teacher can asks question to the whole class : i. What are the characteristic of the eraser, pencil, ruler, rubber band and rock? ii. Can you classify all the things into two groups?
Student classifying the material into two groups. Student found the material can deform and not.
Elasticity is the ability of a material to returns to its original shape after the external forces that made it deform is removed
Teacher show a slide power point (refer to appendix 7) Teacher asks students to form group of five members. Student starts to investigate the Hookes law by doing simple experiment.
Students make prediction, inference, observation and conclusion Students make hypothesis, give suggestions on the design of an experiment
Hookes Law states that the amount of force applied Teachers ask student: to a spring or elastic object i. Can anybody define what is proportional to the elasticity is? amount of deformation. ii. What is the between the force relationship Hookes Elastic potential energy is law? the energy stored in elastic materials as the result of Teacher ask students : their stretching or What is the relationship between compressing. force and spring?

Hooke's Law gives the relationship between the force applied to an unstretched spring and the amount the spring is stretched when the force is applied. Potential energy of spring
PE = 1 2 kx 2
Teacher give some solving problems Students solve problems in groups on slides (refer to appendix 7), Students present their solutions student discuss with their friends.
Strategy/Techniqu es: Group discussion followed by group presentation Resources: PP slides (refer to appendix 7)
Elasticity is the ability of a material to returns to its original shape after the external forces that made it deform is removed
Students conclude the lesson by verbally stating the main ideas and relating to their initial ideas.
Teacher gives worksheet (refer to Hookes Law states that the amount of force applied appendix 8) to student to solve it at to a spring or elastic object home and submit on the next class. is proportional to the amount of deformation. F = kx Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in elastic materials as the result of their stretching or compressing
