Presidents Message
Growth. Thats the one word I believe best summarizes Alpha Zeta Chapters main goal for this entire year. Although there are numerous Asian American interest fraternities at the University of Washington that compete for similar interests and prospective new members, Lambda Phi Epsilon stands out from the crowdand there is good reason for that. Alpha Zeta Chapter has stayed true to the national vision of Lambda Phi Epsilon: to become the preeminent international Asian interest fraternal organization, providing outstanding leadership, philanthropy, and advocacy in the community. This past year, we have crossed seventeen new members and chartered an additional ten more at Washington State University as their chapter host. The rate of growth our chapter is experiencing will open even more opportunities for expanVion within the coming decade. By living our fraternal values and growing the fraternity outside the scope of a single chapter, we are rapidly showing the world how our work is impacting our communities at large. I encourage you to closely read the achievements and milestones outlined in this annual report to contextualize the efforts our all-star chapter has invested into helping each brother unlock his fullest potential. The growth and hard work that members at the University of Washington have accomplished within the past twelve months deserve to be recognized at Convention XXIV as the Chapter of the Year.

Cultural Awareness
Lambda Phi Epsilon promotes Pan-Asian American unity while recognizing the uniqueness of each Asian heritage. While we are an Asian-American Interest Fraternity, there are brothers all over the country with ethnicities other than Asian.
The bamboo ceiling refers to barriers that impede Asian Americans progress towards achieving professional goals. We organized a panel that connected new students with respected Asian American registered student organizations on campus in the fields of business, engineering, medicine, entertainment, government, and more.

The events hosted during our dynamic recruitment weeks highlight the various resources the fraternity provides. Expertly designed flyers, detailed demographic market analysis, and corporate sponsorships, expand the fraternitys outreach.
Info Nights
We kick off every recruitment cycle with an informational session to educate interested students about the fraternity can offer them. We take this opportunity to differentiate ourselves from other houses on campus.
Sorority Socials
One of the highlights of rush week is when we get to introduce rushees to the various sororities at the University of Washington. Through mixers and exchanges, we challenge our rushees to step out of their comfort zone to meet new people.
Interviews
Our recruitment cycles conclude with our billiards/interview night at a pool hall in Downtown Seattle.
Our recruitment sponsors for 2013 include Arrow Law Group, Google, Jones Soda, and Kaplan. Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, we are able to draw more attention to our tabling efforts on campus through free gifts and goodies.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LAMBDA PHI EPSILON INTERNATIONAL FRATERNITY, INC. ESTABLISHED AT WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY Pullman, WAThe Washington State University Colony of Lambda Phi Epsilon announces its Spring 2013 Reveal Ceremony. The event will take place at 9 pm on Saturday, April 13th at the Todd Steps of the WSU Pullman campus. Lambda Phi Epsilon is the newest addition to the United Greek Association as WSUs premiere Asian American interest fraternity. In addition to an unmasking presentation of the WSU Colony, the event will feature step, stroll, serenade, and salute performances to multicultural organizations on campus. The Spring Reveal Ceremony is open to the general public. A number of Asian American Greek organizations from around the Pacific Northwest region will be in attendance. More information is outlined on the Facebook event (http://on.fb.me/LPhiEprobate). ABOUT LAMBDA PHI EPSILON Lambda Phi Epsilons vision is to become the preeminent international Asian interest fraternal organization, providing outstanding leadership, philanthropy, and advocacy in the community. The fraternity was established on February 25, 1981 at the University of California, Los Angeles by principal founder Craig Ishigo and a group of eighteen other dedicated men. By forming Lambda Phi Epsilon as a new Asian American fraternity, the founders hoped to set new and higher standards of excellence for all Asian-interest organizations to follow. The goal of the founders was to transcend the limitations to which traditional Asian American organizations were subject. They envisioned their members to become leaders of their respective communities and bridge the gaps fragmenting the Asian American community through the affiliation with a common organization. With currently over 50 chapters established across respected college campuses around North America, their efforts had set the stage for the emergence of the largest organization of its kind. This showcase really gets people engaged in talking about this heavy topic, which many people dont want to talk about but is really important to talk about, said Thu Nguyen, founder of the Step Out Showcase. Co-chair of the show Tiffany Hsu said there was a major difference in this years show compared to previous years. In the past, the sounds of the steps were faint, she said. Since microphones were used to amplify the sound this year, the audience was able to hear the performances more clearly. UW junior Sanjana Lisle said that in addition to raising awareness of an important issue, the event was something fun to watch. Eric Chee, a dancer in the hip-hop group Elev8, expressed his support for an event like this. Wed like to perform for a cause, Chee said. Domestic violence is a silent issue. Many women feel ashamed to tell their experiences of being assaulted or abused. This event is a chance to show them its OK to speak. ###

Donating Life
January 10, 2013 | Nina Huang Janet Liang, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of 22, turned her struggle into a national movement by blogging and raising awareness about the need for minority donors. Thousands of supporters joined the Helping Janet movement, expanding the bone marrow donation registry in an attempt to help find Janet a perfect bone marrow match. Unfortunately, Liang passed away last September at the age of 25, a few days after receiving a nonperfect bone marrow transplant. Asian patients are passing away, simply because we dont have enough donors, said Tanya Nobles, donor recruitment representative for the Bone Marrow Program at the Puget Sound Blood Center. Theres still hope for those like Jeremy Kong, a 3-year-old who was diagnosed with a rare form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) last June, but they need near-perfect bone marrow transplants to survive. It comes down to statistics. There are over 10 million people on the bone marrow donation registry in the United States. Hispanics make up approximately 10 percent, Asian Americans and African Americans make up roughly 7 percent each, and Pacific Islanders and Native Americans make up only 1 percent respectively. If a patient is of Asian ancestry, and theyre looking for a match, their opportunities are much worse than if you were Caucasian, Nobles said. Nobles reinforced that they want to make sure all patients have the same opportunities for more Asians to register. The Asian Americans are the only ones that can step up and change these statistics. To increase the number of registrations, several Asian American organizations have worked together to raise awareness of the importance of signing up for the bone marrow registry. Lambda Phi Epsilon (LPE) has been working with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) as part of their national philanthropy since 1995, the year when one of the fraternity brothers, Evan Chen, was diagnosed with leukemia. The Theta Chapter at Stanford University organized a joint effort to help Chen find a bone marrow donor and, in a matter of days, over 2,000 people were typed. A match was eventually found for Evan, but unfortunately by that time, the disease had taken its toll on him and he passed away in 1996.
According to UW LPE brother Benny Tran, 136 people signed up for the bone marrow registry through their drive last year, with an average of 70 to over 100 registering at their drive annually. Two years ago, Ty Huynh Chhor was just 20 years old when she underwent the surgical procedure to donate bone marrow. She had first heard about the bone marrow registry from Lambda Phi Epsilons annual drive on the University of Washington campus. Although initially reluctant to sign up, she was eventually typed, thinking that the chance of her being matched with a patient was very slim. Little did she know, a few months later, she would receive a call informing her that she was the best match. But by then, Chhor had already overcome the fear of donating bone marrow and decided that she wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to save someones life. Chhor stood by the famous quote, Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear. I wanted to set an example, she said. Even though youre scared of pain, your fear is really small in comparison to other things that matter the most. For those who are contemplating bone marrow donation, Chhor said that each donor is assigned a patient advocate who guides them through the process. They are the most informed to help make the right decision for you, she said. Read the rest of the article online at http://www.nwasianweekly.com/2013/01/donating-life/

ENDORSEMENTS
May 1, 2013 Attention: Lambda Phi Epsilon National Board, Im writing to you because I believe Alpha Zeta Chapter at the University of Washington has had an exceptional year, deserving of Chapter of the Year recognition at Convention. This chapters accomplishments and display of brotherhood is exemplary for the honor. First, let me personally tell you the level of brotherhood theyve showed this year. Im a charter for Alpha Zeta Chapter (Fall of 1999) whose lineage died years ago. These active brothers graciously allowed me to pick up a little bro so that my line can be resurrected and my legacy can be carried on. Along with that, I would argue that the active house is more responsible for nurturing alumni/active relations than alumni. Actives are constantly throwing get-togethers and events, taking proactive measures to invite alumni to attend. The amount of effort to develop the brotherhood with alumni shows how important the brotherhood is to the chapter outside of campus. It also needs to be noted how hard the house has worked to develop relations on campus and in the community. Alpha Zeta Chapter has become a massive entity on University of Washingtons community. Actives have become active in many student groups and hold leadership roles in nearly every significant student organization. Alpha Zeta had a firm voice in many Asian American issues on campus; theyve engaged in rallies that preserved UWs ethnic studies program and lobbied for affordable tuition towards the state legislature. Theyve worked hard to build relations with other Greeks on campus, and they continue to bring strong numbers attendance-wise for any event. UW AZ Chapter takes no less pride in philanthropic volunteerism in the Seattle community. Were a constant presence at many events benefiting the Asian American community, most notably the Walk for Rice, a grassroots fundraising race that provides food to feed local elderly Asian Americans. AZ also consistently registers one of the highest turnouts for the annual bone marrow drive, and their efforts consistently bring positive press for the fraternity. Academically, AZ has taken huge strides to ensure every active in the house is prepared for the future. Theyve made a commitment to ensure everyone maintains a minimum GPA, and have been successful in enforcing policies if members dont stick to those guidelines. This has been a ridiculously successful year for University of Washington Alpha Zeta Chapter. Were also on our way to developing the Northwest region by crossing Washington State University Colony Chapter. Im fortunate to have been around to see a chapter be so prideful in its brotherhood and have an active presence in the community at large. Id be surprised if the Chapter of the Year is more deserving to any chapter besides UW Alpha Zeta Chapter. Best, Hyun Sung Chung Founder, Alpha Zeta Chapter University of Washington, Seattle Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Inc.

May 7, 2013 Dear Esteemed Chapter of the Year Selection Committee, It is my honor to recommend the University of Washingtons Alpha Zeta Chapter as the 2012-2013 Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternitys Chapter of the Year for their outstanding leadership, mentorship, community service and academic scholarship. As an Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) Academic Counselor, I have worked closely with Mr. Bryan Dosono, UW United Greek Council & Alpha Zeta Chapter President and many of his fraternity brothers who have demonstrated personal and academic leadership with intelligence, integrity and compassion. The mission of Lambda Phi Epsilon inspires its brothers strive for personal and academic excellence and engages them in diverse community service programs/events which they are widely respected by the APIA and communities at large for their excellent work and dedication. It is powerful and reaffirming to see the Lambdas in full force at the National Marrow & Asian American Donor Program, Puget Sound Blood Center, Rising Out of the Shadows Homeless Shelter, APIA Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil, Cascade Science Center Foundation, ACRS Walk for Rice, Annual Hiroshima to Hope event and many more community sponsored programs. Their active involvement in the community is significant in building strong, viable and sustainable relationships between the university and our diverse communities. The Lambda members gain valuable experience and insight into the various facets of humanity and face-to-face time with real people learning cross cultural communication skills and how they can make a difference in the lives of others. Community engagement is a critical component to enhance their academic learning and development as future leaders in various industries and professions. The UW Lambda Phi Epsilon chapter is visionary and forged strong partnerships on campus with other UW student organizations by affiliating with the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center (ECC) which houses over 80 diverse registered student organizations. The Lambdas are an active participant with OMA&D student outreach events promoting educational and leadership opportunities to students from diverse communities and mentor prospective students to pursue higher education. Mentorship with prospective, current and alumni members is a valued role among the members as they support one another through college life and beyond. The Lambdas provide a welcoming, respectful, engaging and inspiring environment for all members, breaking down sociocultural-economic barriers and promoting a caring environment on campus. As an OMA&D counselor, I have seen and heard first-hand accounts from students active with the Lambdas and the significance of their strong and positive connection with their brothers resulting in an increased selfconfidence at this large institution, personal and collective empowerment. It is powerful and significant to have an outstanding Pan-Asian American interest fraternity at the UW. It represents unity and respect among Pan-Asian Americans and challenges the foreboding ethnic stereotype and stigma prevalent in society and popular media. The legacy of the UW Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity will positively impact students, community and families for generations to come, as they grow young men into leaders and pillars in our society and global community. I respectfully present the University of Washingtons Alpha Zeta Chapter as a deserving candidate and hopeful recipient of the 2012-2013 Lambda Phi Epsilon Fraternity Chapter of the Year. Sincerely, Linda M. Ando

To the Lambda Phi Epsilon National Board: I have had the pleasure of working with your Seattle chapter at the University of Washington for the last three years. They have annually volunteered with the Puget Sound Blood Centers Bone Marrow Program to host a bone marrow drive on campus that consistently results in being one of our most successful drives of the year. I wholeheartedly recommend them to you for the Chapter of the Year Award. Bone marrow volunteers are responsible for educating and registering potential donors, while also adhering to FDA guidelines requiring confidentiality and privacy. This involves explaining which conditions transplants are used to treat, how the Be The Match registry works and the two different methods of donation, as well as screening paperwork to ensure that it was completed correctly and collecting the DNA sample from the registrants. It is important that volunteers represent both PSBC and themselves in a positive, credible manner. The Lambda Phis have excelled in all of these areas and have done so in a friendly, engaging way that puts students at ease. From actively promoting the event prior to the drive to securing prizes and giveaways for participants, this chapter has enthusiastically embraced our cause of saving lives. I am truly thankful that they have chosen to work with us and look forward to more opportunities to do so in the future. Please contact me at any time if you have questions. Sincerely,

May 2nd, 2013 To Lambda Phi Epsilon National Board: My name is Mai Roach and I am the current president of alpha Kappa Delta Phi at the University of Washington campus. I am writing to inform you of Alpha Zeta Chapters numerous qualifications for the 2013 Chapter for the Year award. First and foremost, their service to this community is outstanding. Alpha Zeta chapter is the most giving organization on campus. They have given their services to multiple causes like, St. Jude Childrens Research Hospitals Warrior Dash, Raised Awareness for World Hepatitis Day, and Ronald McDonalds House Charities. During every service, this chapter performs above and beyond the expectation of a volunteer and brings big numbers to support every cause. But on top of their service, they have contributed even more to the growing Asian American community in Seattle by supporting numerous organizations ranging from Asian Counseling and Referral Services Walk For Rice Fundraiser and volunteering at the International Districts Night Market and Moon Festival. Their motto, Leaders Among Men, holds true as many of the brothers are leaders of many other organizations on campus. On top of that, they have even given endless support to everyone of my chapters events, ranging from our Boobie Beats Breast Cancer Awareness Showcase to our bi-annual recruitment week events. This year, Alpha Zeta Chapter hosted a charter class at Washington State University. This charter class consists of 10 gentlemen who also show the qualities of a hard working chapter like Alpha Zeta. This feat was not easy since Washington State University is more than 4 hours away. Alpha Zeta Chapter overcame numerous roadblocks in hosting an upcoming colony, including financial constraints, conflicting school schedules, and other personal sacrifices. But with an innovative and diligent chapter like Alpha Zeta, their endeavors seemed effortless. I believe that the Lambda Phi Epsilon at the University of Washington is the epitome of a successful fraternity. Their chapter easily shows their qualifications as leaders, volunteers, and scholars. I firmly speak on behalf of my whole chapter when I say that the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon at the University of Washington fully deserves of Chapter of the Year recognition for their outstanding work. Sincerely, Mai Roach alpha Kappa Delta Phi International Sorority, Inc. Pi Chapter, University of Washington 2012-2013 President

My name is Rebecca Ly and I currently serve as the Chair of the Asian Pacific American Student Coalition (APASC) at Washington State University. I am writing this letter of recommendation on behalf of Lambda Phi Epsilon - Alpha Zeta Chapter at the University of Washington. The role of APASC at Washington State University is to promote culture and diversity within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community as well as to support all multicultural organizations that lie under APASC. This year, the Alpha Zeta chapter chartered a new class on our college campus. Washington State University has been lacking the presence of an Asian interest fraternity and thanks to the Alpha Zeta chapter; there is now a fraternity within the AAPI community. My role as chair is to ensure that the needs of the community are being met and within our community lays an Asian interest sorority for females but there was no established brotherhood that served our male population. What the Alpha Zeta chapter brought was more than just a brotherhood, but a new perspective within our community. I have witnessed their hard work and dedication towards chartering a new class on our campus which is a four to six hour drive from the University of Washington. Since August 2012 when they first arrived on our campus, they worked diligently on recruiting members and reaching out to several individuals. They werent just looking to recruit but to promote their fraternity and what being a Lambda truly meant. The brothers of the Alpha Zeta chapter have been able to provide a strong sense of brotherhood and support from across the state as their new brothers hosted their Bone Marrow Drive and Hepatitis B Awareness Campaign. Within the past year, the brothers of the Alpha Zeta chapter have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential and have encouraged the same to everyone they have encountered. Outside the college campus, I have witnessed their participation in showcases at the University of Washington that promoted awareness for domestic violence as well as seen their participation in supporting other multicultural student organizations on their campus. I have complete confidence that the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon deserves the honor of being the National Brotherhood of the Year. They have done nothing but promote leadership and service within their campus as well as the campus of their new charter class. Even from 300 miles away, their support and sense of brotherhood remains strong. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at Rebecca.ly92@gmail.com. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
Rebecca Ly
