on the Abu Garcia Revo MGXtreme. We tested it in our lab and we cast it about on land. We found it to be smooth and a real performer. It is also no doubt lighter than the Revo MGX. Now, we want to know where the fats were trimmed.
19
So far we know that the ceramic bearings (two of them) are lighter than the stainless steel bearings but their weights are too minute to make a difference. So we decided on a journey into the inner realms of the Revo MGXtreme as we dismantle part after part and compare their weights with those of the Revo MGX.
21
Weights In Total
Before we dismantle both reels, we weigh them both to see what their weights are. We will be weighing them in grams and for those of you who prefer pounds; the conversion is 1gram to 0.035274oz. First we weigh the sleek looking and proven Revo MGX of which weighs in at 152 grams (5.4 ounces after rounding up). At this weight it is already amongst the lightest reels available.
23
The Revo MGXtreme weighs in at a mere 139g (4.9 ounces) of which is 13g lighter than the Revo MGX. This sort of thing normally happens in labs or factories belonging to Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Audis, etc. Now we see the same at Abu Garcia.
25
Dismantling Masterpieces
Carefully the side plates of the masterpieces are removed and weighed. The difference is only 1g. The MGXs side plate weighed in at 17g while the MGXtremes weighed in at 16g. One gram isnt much and the difference in weight is very likely that of the hybrid ceramic bearings found in the Revo MGXtreme that supports the spools shaft.
27
29
Being light is one thing. I cannot help but question the strength of the Revo MGXtremes spool. Being light and heavily ported could also mean that it may not be able to handle as much pressure as that of the Revo MGXs spool.
31
With that in mind I would use the MGXtreme for finesse fishing where casting of very small and light lures and using very light lines is the game as it cast such lures very well. For normal fishing, I will prefer to stick to the Revo MGX.
33
35
The difference between both handles seems to be that on the EVA. The EVA on the Revo MGX is fatter and feels thicker than that of the Revo MGXtremes. The slimmer more sexier design could have saved the MGXtreme a whole gram.
37
The Engines
Next we removed the frames. Both frames weigh the same but a quick weigh in of the other side plates and its components show a bigger difference. Thus we removed the gears, carbon brake washers, washers, and ratchets.
39
The sleeves (round washer thing that secures the carbon disc brake washers to the main gear) of both reels are made of different materials. The one of the Revo MGX looks like copper. I am not sure what material the MGXtremes one is made off. However the MGXs sleeve and brake washers weighed in at 5g while the MGXtremes is a gram lighter.
41
The main gears and other components all weigh the same except for the ratchets. I am not sure what they are made off but the differences between both ratchets are quite big. The Revo MGXs ratchet and a washer that sits beside it weigh in at 5g.
43
The ratchet and a washer that sits by its side in the Revo MGXtreme weighs only 1g. The difference in weight of 4g is quite astonishing. After weighing them over and over again, and getting the same results, I am amazed at the difference in weight. I wonder what its made of.
45
Star Drags
Next we weigh the star drags of both reels. One thing to note is that the star drag of the Revo MGXtreme is ported and is also slimmer than that of the Revo MGX. The Revo MGXs star drag weighs 8g.
47
The star drag of the Revo MGXtreme weighs only 5g making it a whole 3g lighter. I also like the looks of the slimmer and ported star drag of the Revo MGXtreme.
49
Fat Lost
Looks like Abu Garcia trimmed the fats of the Revo MGX at two bearings of which are now the hybrid ceramic bearings, spool, ratchet, sleeves, EVA handles, and the star drag; making a lighter and xtreme Revo MGXtreme. I really do like the new Abu Garcia Revo MGXtreme however it is definitely a reel for finesse fishing as it cast really well with a lighter spool however it has its limits. With the craze of ultra light lure casting going on, it makes sense for such a reel to hit the market. I am getting myself one.

I was given a bottle of Deuthlon reel lube and reel grease recently and was told to give it a try. This is a must try no matter what. Hearing this got the curiosity cat out of me. I so wanted to know what these two oily things can do.
57
Operation Clean Up
My guinea pig is my favourite Revo MGX. I dismantled it and drowned all parts into a bowl of WD40. I then washed all metal parts with hot water to remove the grease and oil. I wiped the plastic parts clean with some tissue. These parts feel so nice. I then reassembled the reel and it felt like new (so clean). I then used a bit of grease for the gear and a drop of lube for the bearings. I left the IVCB-IV brakes dry. I am not sure if it is psychological or not but the Revo MGX feels a lot smoother. Heck it even feels lighter.
59
It cast like charm, and if I may add, better than dirty Diana charming Michael Jackson (with all due respect to the king of pop). The spool feels lighter and the rotation of handle feels almost weightless. So what are these magic oils?
61
63
Removing Squeaks
I proceeded to hunt down every squeaky door latch I can find in my home and gave it a little mist of Deuthlon Reel Lube and almost instantly, the hidden rats disappeared. Seriously impressive stuff this is. As for my reel, I am not sure how long this layer of Teflon will continue to stay on but for now I am happy, wait a minute, I am very happy with what it can do.
65
What Else?
Well, these products are made in Holland and the labels say that they are water and dust repellent, long lasting, cleans and protects against corrosion, good penetration and high temperature lubrication, excellent for outdoor use, and cost saying as only a little is needed per time of use.
67
Conclusion
These lube and grease are amongst the best I have used thus far (rocket fuel not included) and I am happy with what they can do. Shake well, spray on, wipe off the excess, allow it to settle on the part, and then give it a go. If you still cannot out cast a top end super expensive reel, at least you know that your reel performs better than it did before the service.

Test Drives
Quite some time ago Abu Garcia in America introduced the Abu Garcia Villain rod. I have actually used it then on a few trips however; the decision then was to not bring in the rod as there is this uncertainty if the market is ready for it. Now Pure Fishing Malaysia has finally decided that the market is ready and has since launched the Villain in July 2013. Picking it up again sort of rekindled this feeling like when you find your favourite toy when you were a child, in the storeroom.
73
40 Tonne Graphite
This was the reason why Pure Fishing Malaysia didnt dare bring in the Villain about a year ago. 40 tonne graphite simply means that the graphite sheet of which the blank is made of has been compressed using 40 tonnes of pressure. This means that the graphite sheet used will be thinner which translates to lightness, more compact which translates to sensitivity, but more brittle. I am in no way suggesting that the blank of a 40 tonne graphite rod isnt strong. It is and can handle large brutes anytime. Just dont knock the rod about and when you transport it, use extra care.

87
Conclusion
If you are looking for a light, sensitive, and strong rod, the Abi Garcia Villain could be your choice. If you are looking for a rod to match the Abu Garcia Revo MGX reel (or LTX reel) the Villain is a good match. The Villain is a very good rod. Keep in mind though that the Villain needs extra care as with most high-end high carbon rods. The 40 tonne graphite blank is strong in terms of power, but it is also brittle. Always ensure that you transport it in a soft bag or springy rod bag and avoid hitting it.

Introducin
been proven to catch snakeheads is the frog lure, especially those that make splashes. One of these lures is the Jump Frog by Siam Spoon of which has been catching quite a fair bit of snakeheads. Last month I tested out the new or rather face lifted
93
95
Lucky for me the swimming pool at a resort we stayed in was empty practically throughout our stay as it is a low season for them and one of their main attractions is closed for maintenance work. This presented me with the opportunity to test some lures with the bewildered laughter of the towel counter guy.
97
Easy Caster
The Siam Spoon Jump Frog is an easy lure to cast due to its weight. It is a pretty well balanced lure and the medium action 8-20lb rod that I used cast Jump Frog with ease. With a light flick of the rod, the jump frog glided to the other end of the pool (pool is also not that big).
99
Easy Splasher
It is easy to get the Jump Frog to splash. You could twitch and stop allowing the tail section of the Jump Frog to sit lower the water surface with its head looking up. Another way to constantly twitch it back to you. That gives you an almost constant splash as the Jump Frog returns to you.
101
What Do I Think?
I had three models with me and they all performed well in the swimming pool. How well did they do? They did so well that the pool towel counter staff came about and told me in the Malay Language, If there were tomans (giant snakeheads) here, these lures would have been taken.

103
Introducin
ries of rods that begin with the letter V. There was the Verdict, the Vendetta, the Vengeance, etc. Here is another V series rod from Abu Garcia, the Abu Garcia Volatile which will be launched this month in Malaysia and Singapore.
105
The Volatile uses a 30 tonne graphite blank and is coated with a Nano coat. Using Nanotechnology enhances the strength of the rod. This does not mean that the rod will not break. It means that the rod is stronger with the Nano coat instead of without.
107
Nanotechnology
I have been asked by a number of anglers about what Nano Technology is. Nanotechnology uses molecules that are really small measured in nanometre. When you have smaller molecules within an area, what actually happens is that the area becomes more compact with lesser empty spaces in between molecules. This in return strengthens the area making tougher and harder. Imagine a box being filled with footballs. You will notice a lot of large empty spaces between the footballs. Now fill up the same container box with ping-pong balls. You will need a lot more ping-pong balls that footballs to fill the box but the empty spaces are smaller and lesser.
109
If you use even smaller balls, say tiny ball bearings. Now the space between each bearing is even smaller. The area is a lot more compact. The smaller the balls used the lesser the space between each of them. The lesser the space, the more compact the area becomes. That is Nanotechnology.
111
Quality Grip
The Volatile uses high density EVA which gives a solid feel. It seems to match the 30 tonne graphite blank really well. Testing the Volatile on our pressure test setup gave us a good feel of the power that this rod is able to transmit. Having the high density EVA grip does fit well.
113
The rear EVA grip is designed in such a way that gives better grip. This design helps eliminate rod twist when the rear is clipped between arm and the side of the abdomen; used to support the rod during the fight with a fish.
115
Balancing Act
The Volatile I was handed is the medium heavy casting version, 6 feet in length. It felt well balance. The weight disappears the second the rod goes horizontal. However, one has to test it with reel. I tested the rod with three reels (Abu Garcia Revo MGX, old Revo Premier, and the Abu Garcia Black Max). The Black Max is the heaviest reel of the lot. It pushed the weight to the front making the rod tip pretty heavy. The Revo Premier (old model) moved the weight towards the tip as well but it doesnt feel as heavy as the Black Max did. The Revo MGX brought about the most balanced among the lot. Just the right feel for lure casting.
117
Power Test
The Volatile in my hand is rated 8-20lb. I was also given the permission to test the rod until it breaks but I decided against that. At our lab we managed to get 8.6lb out of it testing it on constant pressure build-up (then we stopped). On the bounce pressure test (bouncing weights secured to the rod), we managed to go up to 3.25kg total weights of which translates to a maximum force of about 3 times of which brings the weight of the force to 9.75kg. Translate that to lb. and you get 21.5lb of which is above the rated 20lb.
119
Conclusion
The Abu Garcia Volatile rod looks good and comes with good quality blank. Nanotechnology gives it added security which means that it is more able to withstand knocks. It comes with a powerful tip and it meets its rating. If you are looking for a rod that comes with a faster tip and your target fish species are the brutes like larger toman specimens, then the Abu Garcia Volatile is ideal for you. It will definitely handle the brutes but anything smaller will be overkill. Perhaps it will fit better out at sea in todays fishing scenario.

Apart from keeping your items dry, a dry bag can also help keep you a float in the event of an accident on the water. This could very well save your life. Dry bags dont just keep water out. They can also be used to keep air in. Then there is the opposite way of using dry bags. Should you find yourself in need of something to collect water in; dry bags do make fantastic water holders. They can hold lots of water and keep them in for long periods of time. There are many more ways to use dry bags and I shall leave that to your imagination.
125
127
What I like...
The Penguin dry bag comes with back support and padded shoulder carrying straps of which makes carrying it more comfortable. It also comes with waist strap for added support of which helps to distribute the weight of the bag to more areas. It feels exactly as if I had a normal backpack on my back.
129
The seams of the dry bag is welded together (unlike sewn) and this ensures that water do not sip in through the seams. This also includes the seams at the zip areas. This is especially important and the zipper is one place where water sips in. With the Penguin, the water will need more effort to do so.
131
At the front lower portion of the Penguin dry bag is a valve that can be use to force air out of the bag during times what you need the bag as flat or compact as possible or to add air into the bag during times of emergency when it is used as a floatation device. Another thing that I like about the Penguin dry bag is that it is lighter than most of the other dry bags that I have. Weight is important and the lighter the bag the easier it is to carry around especially on fishing trips out at sea where we need to also carry many other things like rods, cooler boxes, etc.
133
Conclusion
I have not had the opportunity to use the Penguin dry bag for real but I do like it. For the simple reason of it being lighter than all the other dry bags that I have with me, this one steals the show.

Understanding Fishing Rods Part 3
By Philemon Foo
fiberglass rods. In this issue we will take a look at carbon graphite rods of which are mainly used today in rod development and production.
137
Carbon Graphite Composite Blanks These blanks are more common these days. Most of the rods in shops these days are in fact carbon graphite composites. They are more appealing to anglers who want a rod that is lighter, more sensitive, and simply looks good. Carbon graphite composite blanks are made using a mixture of carbon, fibreglass, and graphite. Graphite sheets are the base while carbon and fibreglass are added to it before rolling them into a cylindrical blank.
139
These blanks are more rigid as compared to fibreglass rods. However, a full carbon graphite rod blank will probably be too rigid and stiff to really enjoy fishing with. To add flexibility to graphite rod blanks, fibreglass is added. The higher the content of fibreglass the more flexible the rod becomes. This also adds on to the weight of the rod as well as lowers the sensitivity of the rod.
To increase sensitivity, carbon is added to the graphite of which makes the rod stiffer yet keeping it light. The higher the carbon content, the stiffer and more sensitive the rod becomes. The drawback is that the rod becomes more brittle and the price goes up.
141
Flexible Limits
While fibreglass rods are really flexible, carbon graphite composite rods are less flexible. Being less flexible has some benefits. They have better sensitivity as they are more rigid in construction allowing little waves to be transmitted from the end of the line to the anglers hand. One disadvantage of this is what is that to some anglers, they tend to react too fast (striking to early) and thus lose the fish.
143
Notice that the rod has enough power to manage a 1.5kg dog-fish (shark) without being over flexible or in a more appropriate word; soft.
145
Brittle Blank
With so much power and goodness comes with a disadvantage. Being made with a mixture of carbon and graphite, the carbon graphite composite blanks become brittle. Adding fibreglass to the mix helps make it less brittle but nonetheless it will never be as unbreakable as fibreglass rods. Well just how brittle are they? This really depends on the composite mix. It is generally safe to assume that all carbon graphite rods are brittle and the thinner the blank wall the more brittle they are. I did an experiment a couple of years ago and will share it nearing the end of this article.
One of the toughest carbon graphite rods Ive used. The Aramid weil wrap makes it tough, light, and powerful.
147
Lightweight Contender
Carbon graphite composite rods are lightweight rods. Put both a carbon graphite rod and a fibreglass rod of the same class (poundage) rod on a weighing scale and the carbon graphite will be lighter. In fact many good carbon graphite composite rods for big game fishing are available in the market. They weigh a lot lighter than their fibreglass rod counterparts. They pack quite a deadly punch too taking on sailfish, marlins, etc. Being lightweight they are easy on the load.
149
151
The construction of rod blanks does make a difference. But then again there is such a thing as wrapping. Example will be the Aramid Weil in Fenwick rods that acts as a support system and shield to the graphite blank. This allows the rod to have a thinner wall yet remaining strong. So the next time you look at a rod, do not discount the fact that a thinner or slimmer rod could be the way to go.
153
Price Wise
The costs of making carbon graphite composite rods are much higher as that of fibreglass. The materials alone cost a lot more. As such, carbon graphite composite rods do cost more to purchase as compared to fibreglass rods. However, they are worth your hard earned money. They are lightweight, give better sensitivity, look good (looks are depends heavily on your preference), feels great, but do remember that they require extra care.
155
My Experiment
I remember once while working for a fishing tackle company, where I was heavily involved with product development and marketing, I received a shipment of carbon graphite composite rods that were lightweight. They were really sensitive rod and well balanced. Most of them were shipped out into the market and quite a number were returned to us due to breakage. I was surprised by this as I have been using a few of them without problems. We then had these rods checked by the investigative team and the results were abuse. The main abuse is overpowering the rod way past its limits. That followed by being knocked, crushed by something solid, etc.
One of the rods that managed of a weight force at three more than specced.
157
Wanting to find out more I decided to take some of these rods from the stocks that were in our warehouse and tested them myself. With reel (drag at max) secured to the rod (clamped down by a rod holder) and lines that were way above the limit of the rod I secured a drag checker to the line. This locks in a reading of the force when the line or rod broke. I then secured some weight discs from my dumbbells to the other end of the line and allowed them to bounce. I had the weight of the disc go up all the way to 2.5kg before breaking an 8-20lb mid action rod.
159
2.5kg was the total weight of the dumbbell discs used. Not quite near the 8lb limit of the rod tip right? Well, the drag checker told a different story. The force was way above that of 8lb. I cannot remember now exactly what the reading was but in general (having tested many rods, in fact all rod series by our brands that came into Malaysia and Singapore) the force exerted on the rod was at about three times more than that of the weights. So 2.5kg weight when bounced from about 3 feet gives you a force of about 7.5kg. Convert that to pounds and you get about 16.5lb of which is double that of the 8lb tip limit. Anyway, not all rods are built the same. I have tested 8-20lb rods that managed weights at 3kg without breaking. Cracking sounds were heard of which is a good indication that it has passed its limits.
Another one of my favourites that I abused before being approved for market.
161
There you have it. Some information on carbon graphite rods of which I hope will be able to give you a better understanding or a new perspective on graphite rods. Next month we will dive deeper into the realms of fishing rods. There are a lot more to a fishing rod than just a piece of graphite rod or fibreglass rod with stuffs sticking out as a friend once said.

Skill Enhancers
some of the soft plastic baits or lures that are available in the market. In this issue we take a look at some of the techniques of using them. At the end of this article you should have gained some insights on using them effectively.
165
167
Click to watch video. Notice how the soft baits move underwater.
On your next fishing trip, try to move your soft plastic baits mimicking what you have seen earlier. This simply means allowing your soft plastic bait to drop to the bottom, stay there a bit while you create tiny movements with your rod tip, or sudden jerk and stop movements, etc. depending on what you are trying to mimic. What you can also do is to try out these movements by moving your soft plastic baits inside an aquarium (no fish if possible) and see how they move. This will allow you to see how every movement of the rod affects the bait.
169
Rigging Techniques
There are many techniques that can be used to rig soft plastic baits. My normal rig is the Texas rigs. I also use mainly jig-heads as some of my frequently used soft plastic baits are grubs, minnows, porgies, and paddle tailed fish. Apart from that there is the Carolina rig, and drop shot of which makes up the more popular rigs.
171
Texas Rig
Soft Bait Worm Texas rig can be used for many forms of soft plastic baits especially worms such as the ribbon tails, as well as minnows, paddle tails, crawfish, shrimps, etc. They can be rigged weedless especially when fishing around weeds or with the hook out if fishing in waters with little snags or covers. For Texas rig you will need a bullet sinker. How heavy depends on how fast you want your soft plastic baits to reach the bottom as well as the water depth. Worm Hook
Bullet Sinker
173
Depending on your presentation technique, the bullet sinker can be allowed to slide along the line or secured in place with a small split shot (especially in water with heavy cover). Allowing the bullet sinker to slide reduces the amount of pressure or resistance felt by the fish when it takes the bait. When you are fishing in open areas or when you are dragging your soft plastic baits on the bottom of a sandy area especially in waters where fishing pressure is high and fishes are cautious, the sliding bullet sinker will allow you to present the soft plastic bait more naturally (when pressure on the bait is released).
175
Carolina Rig
A rig that is great for more buoyant soft baits like soft lizard baits, etc. is the Carolina rig. Carolina rig allows you to bounce the sinker at the bottom while your soft plastic bait plays above. This is a good rig when fishing in areas with practically no snags or covers. Barrel Swivel Soft Bait Lizard To rig the Carolina rig use a sliding sinker on your mainline. Attach a leader of about 1.5 to 3 feet (length depending on your preference as well as area of fishing but not too long) using a swivel, and end the rig with a soft bait.
Bullet Sinker
Bead
Work Hook
177
Drop-Shot
Drop-shot rig is great especially when fishing on a boat and you are targeting fishes that are suspended above logs or weeds, even at different water depths. This rig allows you to present the soft plastic baits above these weeds and in direct view of the fish. Another benefit of the drop-shot rig is that it allows you to present your baits vertically. Weeds How the drop-shot rig is tied is by tying a hook onto the line with a certain distance from the sinker at the bottom. If you intend to present your lure a foot above the bottom, the distance between the sinker and your hook will then be a foot. The distance between the hook and the sinker depends on the depth you intend to present the bait at. Drop-shot rig can be used for a variety of soft plastic baits such as lizards, worms, grubs, bait fish, etc.
Soft bait
Sinker
179
Other Rigs
I also do use soft plastic frogs for snakeheads and they are heavy enough to be used without any additional weight. I can secure them directly to a worm hook of which allows me to rig them weedless. This is great as it allows me to present the frog in a more natural manner such as hopping them over lily pads and swimming them not far below the surface.
181
183
Thats it for now. We will explore further in next months issue. Meanwhile do try these techniques and tips out. They will help you improve your fishing.

Anglers Havens
since there was a promotion at Bukit Merah Laketown Resort, I decided to go there as it offers my family lots of activities and I get to fish without spending time away from them.
187
Bukit Merah Laketown Resort of which belongs to MK Land has 3 hotels to choose from. There is the Suria Service Apartment Hotel, Laketown Hotel, and the Kampung Air suits. Being an angler I decided to spend time at the Kampung Air suits.
189
191
I chose the suit of which the balcony is casting distance from the patches of lilypads and some grass areas as these are areas where fishes love to hangout. As for my wife and daughter, spending time in the Jacuzzi happened to be an activity they enjoyed when back at the suit.
193
Activities Galore
There are a host of activities for the family to do. My daughter was looking forward to spending time at the water park while my wife and I preferred the Eco Park and Orang Utan Island trip. Unfortunately the water park is closed for major maintenance work. It has gone quite rundowned over the years and the management decided that it is time to perk it right back up.
195
Eco Park
The Eco Park is like a little zoo where visitors can spend time observing animals. They have animal feeding shows and animal shows. Amongst the animals found in the Eco Park are peacocks and some 40 evor species of birds, reptiles, fishes, porcupines, squirrel monkeys (super cute), Asian bearcat (Binturong), sun bears, crocodiles, deers, etc.
197
199

203
Hedgehog
205
207
209
Sky Cycle
At the Eco Park we also had going on one of the more tiring rides where the only way of moving the ride is to paddle with your hands. This contraption known as the skycycle takes you into the jungle on rail. It gets scary at times especially when it tilts slightly while taking a corner. It is safe but the feeling of a sudden tilt is scary. The skycycle took us above the animals in the Eco Park but to my daughter the fun is actually the ride itself. She calls it the jungle coaster. I highly recommend this ride.
211
Sky Lift
Another fun and relaxing ride is the skylift that goes from the entrance to the Eco Park and back. It is like a gondola (cable-car) but the ski type of which is open and consists of two seats. It goes over the trees, the water park, and then brings you back down at the Eco Park. This ride is another must do when you visit Bukit Merah.
213
215
On this island you become the animal in the cage. The orang utans are free to roam about their island while you walk about and observe them within a cage. This is to safeguard both the orang utans and us, the humans. To me the island simulates the wild environment of which the orang utans need to get accustom to. Walking about the cage we saw the nest built by an orang utan as well as orang utans relaxing on trees. The orang utans are also playful as children are and thus can pose a danger to humans. They are also stronger.
217
There is a research and medical facility on the island that is open 24 hours, 7 days a week. This centre comprising of veterinarians, nurses, and rangers look after the orang utans on this island.
219
Other Activities
Other activities includes a nature trail, water activities at the lake such as kayaking, paddle boats, Lake Cruises, fishing at the lake (land based and boat), spa, ATV exploration, etc. We also spend some time at the swimming pool of Laketown Hotel and the one at Suria Service Apartments.
221
223
225
We fished using bread as bait and the fishes were plenty. We caught lots of ikan temperas (Cyclochelichthys apogon) or beardless barb. One after another they greeted us and we returned them back into the water.
227
I also tried fishing with soft baits and spinners but I was unsuccessful. I saw one rise but it was too far off for me to cast too from the balcony. There are suits even closer to the lily pads but they were unavailable.
229
Things To Bring
Hat; it gets hot under the sun. Insect repellent. Binoculars for nature watching and on orang utan island. Wet clothing or swimwear. Light to medium light tackle fishing gears (depending on your fishing).
231
The water park is scheduled to reopen on the 1st of August 2013 (should be open by the time you read this article). If you are looking for a place to go for a holiday with your family of which allows you to do some fun fishing, why not try the Kampung Air suits at Bukit Merah Laketown Resort.

Sporting Fishes
get is the golden snapper. They are found at river mouths, creeks, estuarine waters, inshore waters, as well as offshore waters, and coral reefs roaming the sea in schools and hanging about structures. Golden snappers are tough fighters and a prized table fish of which makes it a target for both sports anglers and commercial fishermen.
245
247
249
Fishing Em
Bottom fishing them is quite simple. All you need to do is basically drop the bait to the bottom and wait for a bite. Being in an area where they are and parking the boat right helps. To catch them on lure you can troll deep divers or you can bounce a jig at the bottom while your boat drifts. This allows you to cover a wider area.
251
Recommended Tackle
Well, for this fish the range is pretty wide but I will base my recommendation on the most basic tackle for the beginner fishing on a boat, inshore. Rod: Boat rod medium heavy Reel: Size 6000 to 7000 Line: Mainline braid 25 to 30lb & 30 to 40lb leader Hook: Size 5/0 7/0 (could be bigger depending on size of fish)

Fishy Tales
men expecting an article (and photos) of exotic pole dancing. This is in fact an article of me pole fishing at the Natural Exotic Monster Fishing Pond in Rawang. The pond has many fans among anglers from across the country. How could it not with its well stocked water full of giants always ready for a good fight.
Setting up
255
From my previous write-ups Ive mentioned that the pole has a special elastic that runs inside the top 2 sections of the pole and is connected to a fixed length of line with a pole float attached. It is this elastic when stretched that helps to absorb all the fish runs and lunges, and does the majority of the work, something like an automatic drag. The pole allows us to control the presentation of the bait and place the bait with high accuracy. With the sensitive pole rig, bites are also easy to spot via the pole float.
First hook up and I lost a bit of elastic and the whole rig!
257
I had two things in mind for this session. One was to test if sweetcorn is a suitable bait for this venue, as I found it to work for most freshwater species at many other ponds. Number two was to test my tackle to the limit. I was sporting a Shimano Technium Pole fitted with a no18 elastic, coupled with a Dave Harrell 0.6gm pole float. I also wanted to put my new Daiwa seatbox and Preston Innovation pole roller through their paces.
259
At the back of my head I kept thinking if it was feasible enough, or would it be another one of my brilliant ideas that would spectacularly backfire. On a normal day, my tackle would suffice for most situations, but as I found out the hard way, not so much for this one. Just a few days before, as a school break treat, I brought my boys there for spot of leisurely fishing. We had a field day playing and landing redtails the whole session. All were caught on frest cut sardines or a chunk of catfish (keli). One who has hooked into one would appreciate the long strong runs and hard-headedness of this species from the Amazon. There were also some unstoppable brutes that just would not stop taking out line from our reel but thats also expected from this place.
For this pole session chose my spot just to the right of the bridge leading to the restaurant. I chose to fish 9 metres out and after a quick plumb I find the depth to be approximately 6 feet deep straight in front of me but varies significantly towards my right and left. Normally this is not a problem as I tend to pick out the features that I reckon will be most promising but surprisingly there was a strong undertow. This unexpected condition somewhat interferes with my bait presentation as the rig is more difficult to control accurately and my loosefeed had to be administrated up-current. I started out by building up the swim. Using local groundbait, I built up a carpet of feed, hoping to draw the fish in. I also regularly catapult in the sweetcorn for the same reason. This is important due to the limited distance that I can fish.
Continous feeding to keep the bites coming
263
Not long after the first cast I was into a good fish. Too good probably as it just went off without stopping! I was using a crows foot line to elastic connection that unfortunately cut into my elastic due to the high tension in the line and I lost the whole rig, float and all. Some quick repair works had me with a baited hook in the water again and almost immediately into a decent tilapia this time. I hooked into a few more tilapias with sweetcorn throughout the session, not to mention a few more unstoppable runs! The pole is good for delicate presentations and detecting shy bites but having of a fixed line length puts me at a disadvantage with fishes with devastatingly long, strong first runs.
265
Whats my verdict? The sweetcorn is an easy bait to fish with and it does catch fish. However, at this particular pond, I reckon paste baits fare better as demonstrated by another regular who sat beside me. The pole does the job well, though the bigger stamp of fish can pose plenty of problems for the pole angler. Having said that, I would recommend a running line approach for this place using a slightly heavier rod and reel for a better chance to land the bigger sized fishes.
267
If youre ever looking for a quick angling fix with convenient fishing and almost a 100% chance of catching something, this is the place to be. Although a bit steep and RM100 for 3 hours, its very well stocked with all sorts of local and imported species and one can either fish with bait or lures. In my humble opinion its an ideal place to bring your kids for some quality bonding time or to just release some stress with your regular fishing buddies. The pond is just a few minutes from the Rawang exit off the North-South Highway : Coordinates N 03 19.132 E 101 30.914. Tel : 03-60914255.

Name That Fish helps you to identify fishes both saltwater and freshwater species. It has a gallery of fishes to look at. Unfortunately the free version is missing quite a few fish species. Anyhow, clicking on the Gallery tab opens up a door to the many fish species in the world. Clicking on a fish species gives you a lot more information such as habitats, where they are found, etc. It is linked to Wikipedia and searches seem to be done within Wikipedia.
315
Apart from identifying fishes you can also test your knowledge on fish species by participating in a quiz. In Quiz mode you get to choose the categories such as freshwater, saltwater, sharks, etc. You also get to choose how many questions you want to answer. When you get a question right, the answer you chose will turn green. Get it wrong and it will turn red while showing you the correct answer in green. What I do not like about the quiz is that after you have chosen your answer, you are not prompt on what to do next. Click the picture to move on.
317
There is also a scoreboard where you can link to other users as well as friends. This scoreboard allows your friends and you (or other users and you) to challenge each other in the quiz section for the highest score. I found Name That Fish to be a pretty useful application to have but they should put more effort into beautifying the dashboards as well as to give better instructions such as in the Quiz section. Another thing that irritated me was the advertisement that took up half the page but to be honest, it is a free version that I am messing with. Do give it a try.

Superb Blank
The blank of the Ofmer Kewl Sakura rods are made for casting your lures or baits further. With a softer tip to flick out lures, you will be able to cast to areas you never thought you could. Also a more forgiving tip allows for better shock absorption and thus gives you more time to strike. With such a tip it is recommended that super-lines be used as these lines have close to zero stretch and compliments the Kewl Sakura rod well.

Quality Cork
The cork handles on the Ofmer Kewl Sakura are of high quality. Using cork not only reduces the weight of the rod, it also gives the rod a more expensive look. Cork also complements the rods cosmetics and designs really well.

Give the Ofmer Kewl Sakura rod a try when you next visit our dealers. You may very well like it if you are a fun and sporting angler. For more information please contact Sea Tackle (M) Sdn. Bhd. at 03 7875 9888.

New born model to the Zen Zagan series, Micro Stage Drop Flick is well studied and develop for micro jigging fanatics. These micro jigging rods are built from low resin high tenacity carbon. Very different from other micro jig rods which usually are very parabolic, the top 2/3 of the Zen Zagan Micro Stage is made slow taper, giving life and irresistible action to the micro metal baits. The slow taper locks up instantly at the lower 1/3 of the shaft producing strong lifting power and superb hook setting ability reducing chances of missed hook ups which is often when jigging with parabolic action rods.
With power coming from the lower backbone, the Zen Zagan Micro Stage battles bigger than it size anytime, anyday. Equipped with Fuji K guides line laying system and Fuji reel seat. The Zen Zagan Micro Stage comes in Spin PE0.6-1.5 (jig 8-20g), PE 0.8-2.0 (jig 10-30g) and Bait PE0.6-1.5 (jig 8-20g).
