ENGINEERING MECHANICS Max.Marks: 80 Time Duration: 3 hrs. Part-A (10 X 2 = 20 Marks)

1. State parallelogram law of forces. 2. Define Kinetics. 3. What is a couple? 4. State Varignons theorem. 5. Define principal moment of inertia. 6. Define polar moment of inertia? 7. State the law of conservation of momentum? 8. What is work energy principle? 9. Define friction. 10. Define angle of repose. Part-B (5 X 12 = 60 Marks) 11 (a) Four forces of magnitude and direction acting on a square ABCD of side 2 m are shown in figure 1.Calculate the resultant in magnitude and direction. (12)

figure.1 (Or) 11 (b) A 12 N force acts on an angle section as shown in figure 2.Replace this force by an equivalent force-couple system at B and C. (12)

Figure. 2 12.(a) A smooth sphere of weight W is supported by a string fastened to a point A on the smooth vertical wall, the other end is in contact with B on the wall as shown in figure 3. If the length of the string AC is equal to the radius of the sphere, find the tension in the spring and reaction of the wall. (12)

Figure.3 (Or) 12. (b) Determine the support reactions of the beam as shown in figure 4. (12)

13.(a) Find the moment of inertia of an un symmetrical I section as shown in figure 5 about its centroidal axes. (12)

Figure.5 (Or) 13.(b) Determine the product of inertia of the angle section, shown in figure 6 with respect to centroidal axes. (12)

Figure.6 14.(a) An effort of 200 N is required just to move a certain body up an inclined plane of angle 15, the force is acting parallel to the plane. If the angle of inclination of the plane is made 20, the effort required being again parallel to the plane, is found to be 230 N. Find the weight of the body and coefficient of friction. (12) (Or) 14 (b) What should be the angle of so that motion of the 390 N block impends down the plane? Is shown in figure 7. The coefficient of friction for all surfaces is 1/3. (12)

15.(a) An elevator of weight (including the weight of man) 4.5 KN starts moving upwards with a constant acceleration and acquires a velocity of 1.8 m/sec, after travelling a distance of 2m. Find the pull in the cable during accelerated motion. (12) (Or) 15.(b) 2000 litres of water is to be pumped in 3 minutes from a sump to an overhead water tank, which is 1 metre in diameter and 10 m above ground level. The water level in the sump is 2 m below ground level. Calculate the H.P of the pump required, assuming its efficiency is 60%. (12)
