Sounds, signs and symbols We communicate through sounds, signs and symbols.

Communication is expressed in two ways: VERBAL/SPOKEN and WRITTEN.. TERMS/WORDS/ SENTENCES SOUND PATTERN IDEA A. Sound- when we speak we make use of sounds patterns to express and convey our thoughts and feelings. A sound is a sensation produced by vibration reaching the organs of hearing or sensation that is heard as a tone of a noise that conveys a certain impression and messages. Ex. Bird chirping B. Sign - is a mark representing an idea or an object though signs we transmit, messages we want to communicate . A sign is a device in indicating a message or idea. Ex. No parking sign No smoking C. Symbol - a symbol is also a word, a phrase or a name of a thing that symbolizes and communicates something. It is a material object that often represents something rather than material representation. Ex. Idea, Simple apprehension and Term 1. Idea - is a mental representation or image of a thing. It is an abstract representation. It is in the mind. Ex. Idea: an abstract reality 2. Simple apprehension - is the process of abstracting and grasping the essence or nature of a thing.

Term What is term? A term is a verbal or outward expression or manifestation of an idea, or an expression of idea through words and it connotes and denotes something . 1. Connotation is comprehension when we speak of a mother are meant it to be a woman with a child or children. Ex. Mother and child 2. Denotation is extension when we speak about "MRS" we mean "a mother" and "a wife" and etc. Ex. I'm Mrs. Cruz/a married

Definition and Classification of terms Terms are classified according to: quantity, nature of reference and definiteness in meaning. A. Term according to meaning Quantity - refers to a definite or an indefinite numbers of things 1. Singular term - is one that stands for a name of thing, place, animal, fruit or person. Ex. A. Attorney L. S. Cedo B. Agora Market C. This girl 2. Ex. A. Man B. Dog C. Music D. Chicken E. Rat D. Manila E. Singapore F. Lapu - Lapu

Universal term - Stands for a whole class and each member of the class

Particular term - Stands for an indefinite numbers of things, people or individual in a class. - It may be referred to also as a little, some, may, few and most. Ex. A. Some week ago. B. Some students C. Most D. Few books E. Give some money.

Collective term - Stands for a groof objects, people or things regardless as a basic unit. Ex. A. Flock B. Family C. Army D. Audience E. Team F. Society 4.1. Collective terms maybe universal if used with the terms: some, few many, most, several Ex. A. Some animal B. Some army
