Preface
The Comprehensive Index, Second Edition is a convenient, single-volume compilation of indexes to 32 handbook volumes published by ASM International. It features indexes to 20 volumes of the current ASM Handbook (formerly Metals Handbook), andas a service to owners of a complete set of the Ninth Edition Metals Handbookit includes indexes for the 7 Ninth Edition volumes that have been superseded by revised ASM Handbook volumes. In addition, the Comprehensive Index includes indexes to the four-volume Engineered Materials Handbook as well as to the Electronic Materials Handbook, Volume 1, Packaging. A complete list of the handbooks covered in this Volume is given in the table below. The format for the Comprehensive Index has been designed for ease of use. The letter and number code in boldface following a subject entry indicates the handbook series and volume number. The letter designations are A, ASM Handbook, Volumes 120; M, Metals Handbook, Ninth Edition, Volumes 17; EM, Engineered Materials Handbook, Volumes 14; and EL, Electronic Materials Handbook, Volume 1. Owners of Ninth Edition Metals Handbook volumes should note that Volumes 8 through 17 of that series have been folded into the ASM Handbook (and have been re-covered in the signature green ASM Handbook cover). Thus, index entries for these volumes are coded with A; however, these entries are also valid for the red-covered Metals Handbook volumes. Following the boldface series and volume indicator for each entry are the page numbers that indicate the location of information on the indicated subject within that particular volume. For example, A4: 253257, 655 directs the reader to ASM Handbook, Volume 4, pages 253 to 257 and 655. ASM Handbook, Volume 3, Alloy Phase Diagrams is numbered by sections; an example of an entry is A3: 124, which directs the reader to section 1, page 24 of that volume. Because the separate indexes combined in the Comprehensive Index vary considerably in style and approach, the user of this Volume may want to try a number of strategies for finding information on a given subject. For example, to find information about heat treating of a particular alloy, the user should look not only under Heat treating but also under the name/designation of the particular material as well as under the names of specific heat treating processes.
